I gotta admit, evem after seeing Spacey (whom I toook for granted would be great)...I still believe John Shea of Lois and Clark is the best Lutor to date. While granted, he was a bit flamboyant, No other actor has nailed Luthor's personality, sense of entitlement, motivation or untouchable nature so well. He was a damn fine Luthor indeed.

Shea was good, Spacey was good, Hackman was good, Michael Rosembaum is the best.

llYou know, I really haven't watched enough Smallville to judge

Self Explanatory

Id like Kevin as Lex more then anything right now!

Shea was good, but Hackman was great. Spacey was a travesty. I also took it for granted that he'd be great.

It's difficult to decide which actor portrays Luthor the best, but I would definitely say Michael Rosenbaum has it beat in terms of looking the part.

/\ Agreed. Shea would have been better bald. I mean for more than one episode.

I like Rosenbaum's interpretation very much, because he doesn't see himself as evil, but as a businessman, who doesn't let things like people's lives get in the way of making a good profit.

However, I really like Hackman's interpretation because he couldn't care less, but dreamed big.

You don't think that was the way Shea did it?

I wasn't all that convinced of Shea's performance, though moreso than Spacey's.

Spacey had a performance???

No, I was just wondering because that is how I saw Shea, a shrewd businessman who doesn't let anyone get in his way of making a buck.

Rosenbaum is better at this than Shea, in my opinion.

Luthor's speech on the episode 'House of Luthor' sums it up perfectly. Luthor never saw himself as an 'evil' man. He saw himself as someone who was doing what was necessary.

House of Luthor? That's the season one fianale, right? I'll have to rewatch it now.

I don't want to be too rough on Spacey. He has the potential to be the best Luthor ever, but unfortunately, Singer had him portraying a version of the character that's been buried for 20 years...so it's more Singer's fault than Spacey's.
But between Shea and Rosenbaum...it's real close, but I may have to give the edge to Rosenbaum...but barely.

1. Clancy Brown
2. Michael Roasenbaum
3. Gene Hackman
4. Sherman Howard
5. Kevin Spacey

Oh yeah, Brown's voice was AWESOME. Even looking at him in person, he could play a live action Luthor. I stilll like Rosenbaum best.

Unfortunately I would like to put Shea over Spacey, who was totally flat in the role, but I didn't see much of Lois & Clark, so it wouldn't be fair for me to judge.

Consider yourself lucky. While Rosenbaum is a great actor, the writers turned his Lex into such a dumb tool.

The best Luthor on Smallville is John Glover. The best "live acted" Lex is Rosenbaum. Clancy is deffinately the voice that pops in my head when I read Lex in a comic.

He would have been freaking perfect.

And I'm not even basing that on STAS. I never seriously considered him as a live-action Lex just because of STAS. But when I saw him in Carnivale I knew he'd be brilliant. His character is just so sinister and charismatic... man, it saddens me to think he'll never play the role in live action.
