Last night I was looking up the story of John Titor. If you haven't heard of this name before, then keep on reading, you shall find out.

John Titor is man who claimed he was a time traveller from the year 2036.
He said in the year 2036, that he was in the army and that this was his military insignia.

He posted on many message boards and all his posts can be found here
www.johntitor.com this site has major details of some of the stuff I'm posting about.

The story began when Titor started posting on various Internet message boards back in Nov 2000- March 2001(no one heard from him since that date), talking about time travel and science. He said he was a time traveller and would answer any questions about time travel and how it worked. He also posted pictures of his supposed time machine.

He said he first travelled back to 1975, to get a computer called the IBM5100(one of the worlds first personal computers) because he needed parts from it.

May sound funny that in the future, they would need parts to an old computer, right? Well NASA, today, still buy old computers from ebay because certain parts to old computers are not made anymore and they need it.

He had the 5100 computer while he was in our time and even talked about it. He said the computer could translate from old IBM languages . After Titor left, some people working at IBM said they had no idea who that guy was, but he was right about the 5100 he posted on the message boards. Oliver Williams, who runs a John Titor site, interviewed someone from IBM and they said only 20 people in the world knew about what the 5100 could do.

John posted from his fathers computer. Meaning he stayed with his family in the past and lived with a child version of himself. His family to this day, have not shown their faces and only speak through their lawyer. They have said that their son from the future did come back and stayed with them, but do not like talking about it. His family moved to Nebraska after he left. John posted online saying that Nebraska is the new capital of the United States.

The way John described time, is you don't really go back in time, that there are multiple universes, so what he did was, travelled to a universe, similar to he's. He was simply in the past in another universe. He claimed time travelled would be discovered in 2034.

Predictions.

-He said in fall in 2001, that Cern would make mini black holes with the new collider-few months after, Cern made an announcement that they could make mini black holes.

-He made a reference about a building was missing in New York.

-IBM 5100

-No weapons of mass destruction would be found in Iraq

-Steven Hawking would change his opinions on black holes(which he did).

-China would be the second country to put a man in space.

Titor seemed friendly, but arrogant from what people said and seemed to show anger at us for the way we treated our planet. He was very scared about eating food here, because he didn't see it getting made in front of him.

He said if we travel forward in time, we would be in a similar, but different universe to his, but described his future as where Y2K did happen. This caused a civil war and later a World War that caused a nuclear exchanged. He said instead of 1 President, the USA had 5. He said USA still strong. States had much more control over peoples lives and that everyday was like being on a farm-People were close to their family and religion was more of a personal thing. He said people would also make and distribute their own videos on the Internet(this was before youtube). Entertainment would also distribute more on the Internet.


I find this all very interesting.

I would have to imagine, if it's a hoax, that it involves a few people who seem to know quite a bit, who are not doing it for profit.

The main thing that lead me to believe it was a hoax was when he said he was living with his parents. I can't remember if he said his past self had been born yet or if he was just an infant at the time. That just seems really unbelievable that anyone would believe some guy that's standing at their front door saying hes their son from the future.

still, this is an interesting character study; I highly doubt he was real though; his stories are parellel to one particular science fiction novel; I read an article debunking him . . .

In these videos a lawyer answers questions, through John's Mom. She talks about how she was scared of him, but knew it was him. I guess he had to of told her pretty personal stuff. Child John was between 2-4, I think.

He talked about this and the way he explains it, that is not how time travel works. The time he saw himself in as a kid in, was a different timeline to the one he was from.

John-He calls me uncle. Yes, there is a connection. He feels like a younger
brother. Sometimes I get mixed emotions watching him and realize I'm
watching the origins of my personality. I tend to playfully criticize my father about that.

this reminds me of that south park episode where the future versions of Stan and Butters come and live with them. But it turns out they were just actors hired by the parents to teach the kids not to do drugs. lol

Examination of the claims

Predictive failures

The posts were met with skepticism when they were being posted, but it was impossible to prove beforehand that they would not happen. Because Titor claimed the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics was correct, effectively meaning that his travel was from a parallel universe and that things could occur differently than he had predicted, his claims were unfalsifiable.

One of Titor's earliest claims was that CERN would discover the basis for time travel sometime around 2001, with the creation of miniature black holes about half a year after his departure. This event did not occur. An article occurring generally around the time he had predicted about miniature black holes being created by CERN (a recurring theme, also ascribed to Fermilab and Brookhaven at various times) was taken by some to be evidence of this claim; but these events did not occur either. Civil war was not even remotely close to breaking out after the 2004 presidential election.

A particularly obvious example involves the Olympics, whereof Titor claimed: "As a result of the many conflicts, no, there were no official Olympics after 2004.The uneventful staging of the 2006 Winter Olympics refutes this claim; however, there were arguments as to whether or not Titor was referring exclusively to the Summer Olympics.Though the successful realization of the 2008 Summer Olympics clearly refutes Titor's prediction, the website www.johntitor.com points to some of the controversies of the opening ceremonies, such as Lin Miaoke lip-synching and fireworks being computer simulated as suggestive that the entire Olympics were faked.

Problems with the technology

In the context of the demonstration image provided by John Titor, the laser pointer's beam being "bent" reveals the obvious inconsistency of objects near the beam not appearing to be bent as well. The framing of the window visible in the background, for instance, should appear distorted in proximity to a large gravity gradient, but it does not. Some have speculated the "beam" is an optical fiber.

Titor claimed that he was sent back to obtain an IBM 5100 because it could translate several types of computer code. According to IBM engineer Bob Dubke, Titor's statements regarding the IBM 5100's little-known ability to emulate and debug mainframe systems were correct . Supporters state that this information was not publicly available in 2000 or 2001 when Titor made his declaration,and Titor himself stated that this feature was "discovered" as late as 2036 when Unix, as the underlying source behind all computer operating systems still running local infrastructures and other computational tasks, was only two years away from not being capable to function anymore due to 32-bit integer limitations (see Year 2038 problem).

However, this emulation capability was widely known in the industry and commented on in depth in numerous publications dealing with both the 5100 and programmable microcode in general. References to this fact were also available on the Internet as early as 1999 and therefore predated Titor's postings. This is a fairly obscure bit of trivia, however, which suggests that whoever was making the posts either was familiar with the machine specifically or else had at least a general interest in retrocomputing.

"Apparently, APL was a difficult task for IBM to accomplish with an interpreter in the 5100, so instead they wrote an emulation program so that the S/360 mainframe version of APL could be run instead -- The 5100 is like a desktop IBM S/360 mainframe computer which only runs APL."

Problems with the story

Numerous commentators have pointed out the broad similarities between the Titor story and Pat Frank's classic post-apocalyptic science fiction novel Alas, Babylon.Alas, Babylon takes place in a small town in Florida just before and after a nuclear war and describes the struggle to survive as a family in the aftermath. In the book, the protagonist lives in the mythical town of "Fort Repose", while Titor claimed to live in the "Fort", formerly the University of Florida (UF). An examination of the claims also suggests several inconsistencies within the story. For instance, in some posts Titor claims that money is widely used and people still have credit cards, despite his statement that centralized banking no longer exists (though that of course would not exclude the possibilitiy of private currencies being used). In another posting he speculated that today's dollar would be usable in his time, but that this would be after the reorganization of the federal government according to his own history, potentially making the currency worthless. In most cases, he claims to have been given his basic education at UF, but in another post claims to be home-schooled.

Other problems with the story include inconsistencies relative to Titor's comments. His first appearance appears to have been, not in 2000, but in the summer of 1998 through two faxes to Art Bell's radio program Coast to Coast AM. When he began posting the online story Y2k (1-1-2000) had come and gone without any real problems. Yet in the 1998 faxes to Art Bell he said, "Y2K is a disaster. Many people freeze to death trying to get to warmer weather. The gov. tries to keep power by instituting marshall [sic] law..."

In the online story he stated that a part of his mission was to prevent the coming world war by changing history. Yet during October 2000, a month before he began posting, he appeared in a UK IRC chatroom. In the chat log his response to Yariesa's question asking if we could change the future that he was predicting he answered, "It's too late. I just wish things didn't have to happen they way they will."

Inquiry on the story

An Italian TV program (Voyager - Ai confini della conoscenza) aired an investigation of the John Titor story on May 19, 2008. Mike Lynch, the private detective hired to investigate, found that there were no registry traces, even far in the past, of any John Titor or Titor family. In addition, the John Titor Foundation had no office and its address is a rented post box; no tapes, recordings, or evidence of Titor were found; and only Larry Haber (an advocate and owner of the commercial rights about all concerns involving John Titor) confirmed his existence. Lynch's conclusion is that John Titor may be John Rick Haber, a computer expert who is or was Larry Haber's brother.
