I just read Garth Ennis' excellent series, Ghost Rider: Road to Damnation.
It was fantastic in every way (love the ''Jesus'' cameo and ending especially).

But it made me think....how dumb can Johnny Blaze be?

He gives up his soul for his friend to not die? For one, if he makes a deal with the devil, he must also assume that heaven exists, so unless his friend was evil, then he was probably going to paradise anyway so it would make the sacrafice mute. If I was dying, I sure as hell wouldn't want my friend damned to hell for eternity for my sake, as good intentioned and selfless the gesture is. I would rather die and meet him on the other side when his time came in, not see him suffer in eternal torment.

I mean come on, it wasn't the brightest decision ever made, was it?

But I loved the series. AMAZING art and writing. It had a lot of elements that sort of reminded me of the constantine movie.

How is the new Rider ongoing series? Is it the same artist and writer?

Stop yer spammin' an' git back on topic!

The thread starter's analysis, although searching and interesting, falters when one considers that Johnny ended up as a flaming skull headed superhero of vengeance. How bad can that be? :o

:ghost:

It just seems pointless to me, he did what he did because he didnt want his friend to die. Thats honorable beyond anything. Its like asking "Did Peter parker really have to become Spider-Man after Unlce Ben was killed?"

Exactly. It may not have been smart, but it was right. And besides, he's not damned to hell all of the time. Sometimes he gets let out to act as Hell's bounty hunter.

Wow...this thread's title totally threw me off for a second. :o

Well, you are pretty dumb. :oldrazz:

Anyway, who cares if Heaven exists? Blaze wanted his friend to live, not go to Heaven. Plus, consider the fact that Blaze lives in the Marvel universe. Is the existence of one guy claiming to be a devil really confirmation that Heaven exists in that context? There's been a guy running around calling himself a god for decades in the Marvel universe. If you accept that Thor is a god, which most people in the Marvel universe didn't until the King Thor saga, that would mean that the pagan gods exist. So does that automatically preclude the existence of a Judeo-Christian Heaven? Or does the existence of the devil contradict that? Or do they cancel each other out and suggest that maybe neither is real and these are just two guys who get off on relating themselves to religions? Point is, Blaze couldn't be sure and, frankly, I don't think he really considered any of it. You're oversimplifying things if you believe that a guy in the Marvel universe could just blithely say, "this guy's definitely a demon, so Heaven definitely exists and, in preventing my friend from dying, I'm actually keeping him from its eternal paradise." Beyond that, it's kind of ridiculous to assume that a guy would just be completely calm and detached enough to logically philosophize over what the existence of a devil means when his friend's life is at stake.

Actually, its not so bad if you consider that they would probably be spending the rest of eternity in paradise, while you, on the other hand, are spending every night having your flesh stripped from your bones and being devoured in hell.

You're thinking about it in terms of real life, and not the ghost rider story

It's honourable, but its as stupid as hell, especially as seeing he knew hell existed, so it wouldnt take a leap of logic to assume the same for heaven , right? and what kind of friend would want his pal burning in hell all eternity because of him????

But hes not eternally in hell. And Hell in the MU isnt the flesh being ripped off of you hell as read in the bible. Read up on it, youre grossly misinformed.

Did you read the mini series, road to damnation? In it, it said he is condemned to ride hell's h ighway for eternity, and that all hell's monsters chase him and tear him apart and rending him to pieces....thats the comic, dude, not the bible.

Pfft, says you. I can hide it for a really, really, really long time. Like...like for another year...or something.

It didn't matter if heaven existed or not. Johnny wanted his friend to be alive, not to go to heaven. And it's called self sacrifice, my friend. Giving something up for the sake of others.
