Joker 'JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX' (Phillips and Phoenix return for the sequel) General News & Discussion Thread

My dissertation of a review. :o

The first movie was much more interesting than this one. It had an actual story and themes. It was strange but not so much to be distracting. It was tense, riveting and made you feel sympathy for Arthur.

This one didn’t make me feel much. The scene where they discussed what Penny thought of Arthur was good but that was as close as it got to the original. I agree that a few musical numbers would have been fine but there were far too many.

The 'D' CinemaScore is simply crazy. This rumored $40 million opening is bad... but the second week drop could be monumental.

Arthur Fleck was never The Joker. He's just JOKER. Next to nothing in common with The Joker.
And this was one of the fundemental problems from the start. The sequel made it even more obvious. I get that these things can be elseworlds, but we have a director who even stated that he couldn't get these made without the Joker name. Also, didn't Philips say that both him and Phoenix wanted no reference of DC or the comics in general on set when making them? Not to mention the long pauses, and pretentious/backhanded comments whenever Philips was asked about Batman or that larger world.

Stuff like that just rubs me the wrong way. And now you get this.

That's why Heath's Joker comes along to kill him and take the name.

I'm always amused when people use "Elseworlds" to justify directors/screen writers butchering comic characters. As if these guys even know or care what an elseworld is. I don't blame Todd Philips. He never had any interest in DC, Batman and what not. WB forced Joker on his project. Phoenix's character was never Joker (even ignoring the sequel) regardless of his performance. He was a mentally disturbed guy who put on clown makeup. If WB really believes that that's what Joker is then they clearly never understood their own IP. What I'm curious about is Harley. The character has been in bomb after bomb. All it took was one to bench GL and Flash. I hope they finally pivot away from this character. Love Harley or hate her but she's not the blockbuster seller that some people have been led to believe and she cannot possibly be a cornerstone/marquee character (cough pillar of the universe cough). Marvel doesn't pretend that for Deadpool or Guardians of the Galaxy even though they actually did make billions of bucks combined. WB/DC leadership needs to get over themselves at this point. They need to invest in genres and concepts not pin their hopes on visionary directors reinterpreting singular characters to carry trainwrecks

As per, I just read the wikipedia because this movie flat out did not interest me in the slightest and uh

Yeah this movie just seems kinda gross.

Also am I the only one who could've seen this movie not making anywhere near Joker 1's box office from a mile away? Joker 1 made so much money via the Rockstar (as in GTA Rockstar) method of getting butts in seats via the power of controversy and the news reporting that it's basically only for the cool kids. Only for it to turn out to be some weird rewrite of Killing Joke by a Scorcese fanboy and not much else. The moment everybody saw what the movie actually was, whatever sequel that came out after was gonna be doomed to underperform. The fact that the movie genuinely seems like it's bordering on torture porn does not help in the slightest, either

Considering they offered him Gunn's job first, it likely was. The people running WBD are the dumbest mother****ers in the business right now. Do these people even watch dailies anymore?
Keep in mind that Zaslav is the same studio head that thought Flash was going to be a giant hit and told the NBA he didn't need them. WBD is going down the drain.

The more I think about the musical aspect, the less sense it makes to me. The musical numbers really didn't do anything for the plot or the characters, they're generally just random karaoke performances that happen consistently while the movie is put on pause, except for 2 or 3 numbers that are genuinely important. Weird.

Remember it's not a musical. Todd Phillips kept warning everyone. :o

I always said this movie was doomed after finding out they were giving Joaquin’s Joker a girlfriend. In what world does this cater to the audience that got the first film to a billion dollars

David Zaslav is a hack programmer of reality cable tv garbage, he has no idea what he’s doing. Mike De Luca also spent the last few years making a bunch of expensive flops like this at MGM, his days have to be numbered.
