I love the 60's Batman show. But the surfing episode was not only the worst Joker episode, but one of the worst episodes of the series. If you read Adam West's biography 'Back to the Batcave', he says surfing in the Bat suit was a low point for him and the series. Just plain stupid.

So was Joker's scheme. Taking over Gotham by becoming king of the surf? How could that even remotely work? I know Joker's crazy, but he's not stupid.

See, this is the perfect illustration of how camp can be done well, and how it can be done badly. The best parts of the TV show are so perfectly balanced between serious and ridiculous, that kids can see it as one thing and adults another. That, in a nutshell, is the genius of the 60's TV show (and nothing before or since has been able to replicate that). It not only works on these levels, but also as a very 60's mockery of po-faced authoruty figures spoiling the fun of free-spirited rebels.

The surfing, it's just silly. Not even kids could take it seriously.
