Plot Summary: At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, Revolution Studios' "Across the Universe" is an original movie musical springing from the imagination of renowned director Julie Taymor ("Frida," "Titus," and the Broadway smash hit musical "The Lion King") and writers Dick Clement & Ian La Frenais ("The Commitments").

A love story set against the backdrop of the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, mind exploration and rock 'n roll, the film moves from the dockyards of Liverpool to the creative psychedelia of Greenwich Village, from the riot-torn streets of Detroit to the killing fields of Vietnam. The star-crossed lovers, Jude (Jim Sturgess) and Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), along with a small group of friends and musicians, are swept up into the emerging anti-war and counterculture movements, with "Dr. Robert" (Bono) and "Mr. Kite" (Eddie Izzard) as their guides. Tumultuous forces outside their control ultimately tear the young lovers apart, forcing Jude and Lucy – against all odds – to find their own way back to each other.

Pretty unique looking with a great soundtrack, visuals look to be a lot of fun and i think the movie will have some heart

It has to be better than Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band the movie.

Trouble for ACROSS THE UNIVERSE? Studio recuts? Taymor leaving? Lordamercy!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. If you're like me, then you'll have really dug the ACROSS THE UNIVERSE trailer that hit the net a couple months back. I'm a big Beatles fan (who isn't?) and the trailer just made me smile.

What made me turn that smile upsidedown was reading in the trades this morning that Joe Roth apparently recut the film without telling director Julie Taymor. Roth is producer on the film, but has also directed such gems as CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS and AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS... although I actually don't hate AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS... just don't feel much of anything about it.

Why the recuts? Well, the movie was originally due out in September of '06, so I'm sure that plays a part, but I always have to shake my head when I hear about things like this. There are some filmmakers you hire realizing you're getting the whole package, going all the way to the river with 'em. It's like when Terry Gilliam gets butt-****ed... Did you not know you hired Terry Gilliam to make a movie? Let him make his movie!

I don't want to compare Taymor to Gilliam. She hasn't earned it yet, but she's made some really quality films and what Roth did to her was really ****ty.

Normally I'd want to support the filmmaker and blame the studio, but sometimes the studio is right. Look at DONNIE DARKO director's cut vs. theatrical cut. But here I'm finding it difficult to see the studio's side of things. The test screening reviews we got were very positive. They were from a while back, so I'm assuming it was Taymor's work in progress that they saw...

Now, Taymor's threatening to take her name off the film. Yikes. Let's hope a decent film somehow pops out of these two fighting parents.

Wow, that's some crappy news.

in my theater they have this show type thing before the movie starts and i always have to sit through this movies trippy trailer...

ive come to hate it.

I love the soundtrack already.

I'm not into chick flicks, but I was really looking forward to this because it seemed like it could be very unique and interesting. Hopefully some sort of deal is made and the film isn't impacted negatively.

Normally I can get past the actor playing a character...

But trying to think of Evan Rachel Wood... as a nice girl from the 70's in this romance.

Not happening.

That is disapointing to hear it is being snipped. I'm a pretty damn big Beatles fan and this looked unique so I was really looking forward to this.

Well a tested horrible eith Taymor's cut and postively with the studios' cut. Sometimes and edit can really make for a good film when the director is too stubborn. I mean just release both versions on DVD.

I bought the soundtrack yesterday.
All Beatles songs, and two are sung by Bono.
:woot: :woot: :woot:

I only have the single disc. And he remakes Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

I understand the theatrical version is Taymor's version

its almost universally getting panned :o

and to be honest ive pretty much never heard a Beatles cover i actually liked one bit. the only one ive heard thats good so far is Onelinedrawing's combination of In My Life and When I'm 64

I don't care the trailer was amazing and I intend to see this.

If it disappoints, c'est la vie.

BTW I like how every movie that isn't about explosions or men in spandex these days is now a chick flick.

have you heard these ones? i think they're great
U2 - Helter Skelter
Johnny Cash - In My Life
Rufus Wainwright - Across the Universe
Sarah Maclachlan - Blackbird?

Elton John's "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" is the best Beatles cover for me.

As for the film, I have no interest.

i cant wait to see the film.

also, the only worthwhile beatles cover is joe cocker's little help from my friends...he really made that song his own. i've heard a nice cover of dear prudence once, but dont know who it was by. all other beatles covers i've heard blow.
