Has anyone here ever had to do jury duty? I got a letter in the mail yesterday saying I had to go.

Haha, sorry man.

This reminds me of the guy who is being tried for lying during the jury selections. He said hes a racist, sexist bigot who hates everyone, that way he wouldnt have to do it. Now hes about to go to jail!

Tell the judge you have turrets syndrome and then start yelling profanities at him.

Tell them the great empress, Dew K. Mosi will not allow you to serve.

I have to go for Jury Duty on the first of August and it's bizarre because I never thought it was such a common thing but since I got the summons to appear, every day someone somewhere is talking about Jury Duty now.

I had to do jury duty a few years ago and got selected for a murder trial. It took about a week and we found the guy guilty of first degree murder. The guys sister was shot earlier that day, he got drunk and high, then come back to his house where friends and family were grieving the loss. The guy thought some of his sister's friends at the house were the reason she was killed and killed one of them. Pretty screwed up.

Yeah, twice.

Once during college and I should have used the "I'm in school" excuse. Secondly a few years ago, I went in with a gameboy, and they never called me.

Some companies don't compensate you so I'd come up with some excuse.

There's a test to see if someone is racist or not?

My summons said Standby Jury Duty, so I guess that means that there could be a chance that I might not have to do it.

I've gotten a jury notice three times. I think I got out of the first for school. The second time I called the night before and they didn't need me. The third time I had to go in, but I was in the half that didn't get selected, so I got to go home.

But I seem to be getting closer each time... :(

Either that or your job doesn't pay you for jury duty and you are dependent on that income.

It's not that hard to get out of actually being on a jury. If your work won't pay you you can claim a hardship, if you have a relative that's a lawyer you can say you'd be biased to defense/prosecuting lawyers. If you're self-employed you might be able to get out of going in the first place. It kind of sucks to have to go for that day, but it's pretty easy to legitimately get out of having to serve on a case.

Yeah, but you get paid to be on a Jury, I got a whopping $17/day! I would've had to work a whole hour and a half to earn that much money when I was on the jury.

In Jersey it's $5.00 last time I served.

you should check if that summons is the type where you have to call the night before to find out if your group has been selected. thats how its done here in L.A. County. also, i got $15 a day for showing up to the court house a couple of times and leaving about 2 hours later. plus my old job used to pay me so it was like getting most of the day off

Its no big deal.....most of the time you'll be called on in for a misdemeanor case, of which, the person will not show and you'll be out by 9:30 a.m......lol

BUT, you can call and ask for change, you can do that I believe one time so if there is a conflict, just call and let them know. There should be a number to call on your letter...

But, you should go ahead and go, if there is a bus that runs near your house, all you need to do is show the letter and you ride the bus free downtown, ..... that way you don't have to pay for parking.....its not a big deal, you go in, they give you a number you go and sit down in the waiting room and wait for your number to be called.....take a book, ipod or something because you may not be in the first round of numbers called....

If there is a voir dire which is simply picking of a jury where the attorneys may come in and ask questions, then it is a large case...if the prosecuting attorney asks if you believe in the death penalty, say "no".....:cwink:

Even more than the general inconvience of getting a summons for Jury Duty, is if you're selected for a trial, you will no doubt have at least one incredibly stupid bleeding heart on the jury, who won't look at the facts of the case and will just want to let the guy off, even if he's a mass murderer. My Aunt was actually on a case where the defendant was clearly guilty of killing someone, the facts clearly showed she planned it, when it was time to render a verdict, the bleeding heart couldn't believe anyone would do that and wouldn't vote guilty and ended up locking herself in the bathroom until they eventually had to declare themselves a hung jury.

i always give them the "im in school" excuse, during summer and when i really do have school.

but the notices keep coming!

and they will never, ever, stop...
