Very enlightening article. Returns is certainly the most heavily religious of any superhero movie (unless you count The Matrix tril), it's really not very subtle at all. Not that it should be, if that's Singer's view of the character. What intrests me is that Richard Donner, while certainly showing the Christian elements of Superman, presents the character as a (somewhat) gentle, normal man with great powers and a great responsibility. Singer's version of Superman is beyond human beings, and can be seen as a mythical, flawless saviour from the skies.
 
In some ways, it reminded me of Dr Manhattan from the Watchmen and how he grew apart from humanity.

Except he's far from flawless. More on par with Zeus than the commonly accepted actions of the Christian version, but that's JMHO.

maybe not so much Zeus as more Apollo. Superman's not much of a skirt chaser.
