Imagine for a second, that The Last Jedi comes out, and it just completely whiffs it. It’s a huge disaster, financially and critically. Do you really think Disney/Lucasfilm will move forward with Rian Johnson’s Trilogy?

It just boggles my mind why WB allowed this to occur. Why was this allowed to happen?

No planning. Greed. Poor judgement. Poor creative choices. Greed. Desperation. Hubris. Greed.

Can we go back to the days of everyone insisting Coco was gonna bomb and not meaningfully impact JL's box office in any way? :funny:

I said it in the Where Do We Go From Here thread, but I think it came down to market niche. Marvel has a reputation for making movies you can (generally) take the whole family to, which is a major part of their success. They're designed so pretty much anyone can watch them regardless of age.

WB was clearly trying to position their universe as a more prestigious and adult-oriented one, hence them doubling down with BVS, and even the original plan for Suicide Squad to be darker and more mature than what we ended up getting. Like if you watch BVS, it's very clear everyone involved thought this was a super deep masterpiece that was gonna be hailed as a mature comic book movie for grown-ups.

I give you more Pirates of the Carribean movies

Went through some old posts earlier.

JL opening below $150m seemed like an impossibility.

96 million opening weekend.

Let that sink in....

I really hope it's gonna be a wake up call for WB.

About a month ago I did my prediction and people called me crazy for having low numbers. To even think that the movie is going to have lower numbers than I've predicted is bizarre.

Nobody was expecting this, nuts!

Don't feel bad. With WB going to great measure's to course correct and even ham it up with the critics into make this movie more fun and entertaining with humor, I thought this would get okay-good reviews that would warrant a $161 mil dollar weekend. Needless to say, I will not be playing any lottery tickets for the time being lol.

This is absolutely right. They all thought they had some kind of massive cultural smash on their hands that would set up their shared universe perfectly. Never mind that the film treated the source material extremely poorly, and presented a story that made no sense half the time.

The blind hubris of it.

All the major markets opened the same time as domestic. It's not great.

I mean, legs could still develop states side and the movie could break out in Japan, but this is outside most estimates at the moment.

From Forbes:

Occam’s Razor suggests that folks didn’t like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice so they stayed away from the sequel. Like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, a retooled, lighter, more kid-friendly “this is what the last film should have been” sequel was comparatively rejected because audiences sampled the last one out of curiosity and didn’t like it. If you consider Justice League to be the third chapter in Zack Snyder’s DC Films trilogy following Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice, then Justice League played like the third Divergent movie. Fans and general audiences decided not to be fooled for the third time.

This. In big bright colour-corrected lettering, with heavy CGI moustache removal.

The reason why JL has failed is due to Batman v Superman.
I find the comparison with Divergent very interesting. Could DC focus on the TV universe then? The CW Arrowverse is doing great, maybe integrating WW into that, and going into movies in a few years might do the trick.

Loving the lack of belief here..... shocking. Everyone bangs on about demanding we see Superman's hope and how the DCEU never shows it, the moment we need that spirit of feeling, everyone caves in.

You know whats shocking? YOU!

A movie with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Cyborg making 96 million opening weekend IS a disappointment of EPIC proportions.

Accept it and deal with it.

You know, an upside to this whole situation is that the Arrowverse can start using more DC characters.
