Kathy Griffin Makes Offensive Religious Remarks About Jesus

Meh. My parents are raised Catholic, but they didn't make any big attempts to convert me. My mom just wanted to see me dress up for communion. :thisplaceneedsanauseatedsmilie: They seem to respect the fact that I'm just Christian like they turned out to be good enough.

Christianity and Catholicism are two separate religions.

I'm fairly aware of that. As I said, what they were raised to be and what they ultimately turned out being are two different things. They gave me the trappings of their Catholic upbringing, but I came to the conclusion like they did that the concept was better than the structure.

What do you mean?

Catholicism (strictly my opinion) makes the pompous assumption that all Christians are members of the flock, but I came to the realization rather quickly that you don't need to be a member of a congregation and pray to people with large hats and who they decide to call saints today to believe in Jesus.

Oh... I see. Well then, you're right on!

Not anymore.

Really, when did that change? Considering Catholicism involves the belief that Christ is the Lord, Messiah, etc...how can that separate it from Christianity? They may have different doctrine that they follow but when it all comes down to it, the belief in Christ is what makes a person a Christian, whether they are Baptist, Catholic, etc. Each denomination is going to be a bit different but the essentials are the same.

They also worship the virgin Mary, wrote their own books in the Bible, the hiarchy makes judgement amd punishment among individuals as if they were God, there shouldn't even be a hiarchy based on power (everybody is supposed to be equal!), they proclaim individuals saints (the only Saint that was, is, and ever will be is Jesus). There so much more arguments, I don't even know where to begin.

While that is true, they still have a believe in Christ as their Lord...so while the doctrine may be different and they do things based more on tradition than what the Bible says, they are still under Christianity. Every denomination has differences.

The books that are part of the Apocrypha were found in the Septuagint, which is the greek translation of the hebrew bible, which is what Catholicism uses for the old testament

Also, if you disobey the hiarchy, you disobey God and burn in hell. And that is how they lure poor innocent boys.

They could've just written it themselves. :whatever:

Even though the catholic church didn't exist when the Septuagint was translated from the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century BCE

Ugh, I can't believe this statement. Read your history books, ronzpeed. Until the Protestant Reformation began in 1517, the Catholic Church was the Christian Church, period.

I was a big fan of hers until this incident. This went beyond entertainment. She meant to shock and offend and she did just that. How insensitive and thickheaded is she to say something like this. I'm not up in arms. I'm not organizing protests but I'm done with her. I hope everyone of good conscience does likewise.
I agree completely. I've become disillusioned with many black celebrities for similar reasons. The best thing to do with celebrities like Griffin is to just stop paying attention to them -- stop being their "fan". Take away their energy, take away their fame, as soon as they show what attention-****ing troglodytes they really are.

With that said, the thread starter is an equally obnoxious individual. Whatever pearls you THINK you're sowing amongst swine, Memphis Slim, you come off as a clanging cymbal. A loud, obtuse, psychotic clanging cymbal.

Kathy Griffin gets 'mad props' from me in regards to this. The idea that religion and beliefs are somehow untouchable infuriates me.

wow. you just gave an unattractive, unintelligent woman "mad props".
CONGRATULATIONS.

These have to be the most god-awful arguments I have ever seen to defend the statements of Griffin. More confusing, they are made by notably intelligent posters, who normally have no problem using logic to dissipate the wisps of Memphis Slim's sensationalism. Instead, we are treated to a slew of posts featuring derision, the free speech card, and out-right religion bashing. Some that caught my eye:

I will never understand why people expressing how they feel is such a threat to people like you.
" Wull,...you can feel that way, just don't Say it!"
This ugly redhead does not come into anyone's home with a gun and force them to listen to her. Why on Earth would you give a s*** what she says?!
You're trying to make it sound like we should be careful about making fun or criticizing because someone is going to show up and spank us....??? As for me...I do believe in God, but I believe the Bible was written by a bunch of old men to keep the masses in line....using the fear of God to control people...that's what organized religion does.....preys on peoples' fears
again, those people were offending real people.
You boys need to turn off your defensive auto-pilot, against all things "Christian". If Griffin said "I love this award so much I wanna *** out with it in a closet!", is it freedom of speech? Why would a gay person "bother getting all offended" -- after all, who cares what she says?

And how in-freaking-credible would it be, if people argued the "homosexual" identity is a cultural fabrication, so real people were not offended? You wanna take it over to a Christian messageboard and see it in action? You'll be astounded by the parallels in sheer ignorance, to the posts you've just made -- I guarantee.

Cristo The Second said:
Like I said before, when it comes to Christianity, people are always ready to support the person on the other side. They were both exercising their rights, but the Catholics were 'whiny' and 'delusional'.

I suppose if I said that "all athiests were delusional hedonists" or "all gay people try to ride on the coattails of a REAL Civil Rights Movement and the gay rights movement is a piece of crap", then it would be a totally different issue.

And it wouldn't even be because of my right to free speech(hell, you'd probably acknowledge that)it would be because I was acting 'like an idiot' and 'being ignorant'.

But she makes an offensive remark towards Christianity and she's 'enjoying her right to free speech'. She's showing those 'Christian bastards' what she thinks of their religion and it's 'all good'.
Excellent post, very apropros. For this thread's humble origins as another MS topic, the Christians have certainly put forth more intelligent comments than their opponents.

This post is perfect.
It makes no silly arguments in Griffin's defense. No tricks, no smoke and mirrors. This is what it's really all about.

Why would they on that particular remark? It's not directed at homosexuals in general.

And how in-freaking-credible would it be, if people argued the "homosexual" identity is a cultural fabrication, so real people were not offended? Again, huge difference in the context of the comments. You're contending that there is a similarity between unsubstantiated opinion about a particular group of people and offhand remarks about believing in a new god.

You see, her comments weren't directed at Christians, but a figure that they deify. They were offended at comments drawn about something they worship, not at comments about them in particular.

He wasn't able to match the context of what was said with his comments any better than you.
