I was somewhat surprised to see her brought out on the stage with the main cast, I thought she had a pretty minor role, if anything. But apparently she has a pretty important role and sounds like she is going to be there to help bring Finn back to the fight, maybe.

Oh and she is freakin' adorable!

I'm so excited to see this character and intrigued to see how she plays within the plot

I just really hope that she's more than just a love interest; that's the biggest specualtion about her so far, and I always get leery about characters who are defined by that role.

...Plus, I am a bit of a Finn and Rey shipper, in part just because I want to see a low drama take on any romance in the ST, and partially because I want to see a black guy dating a white woman as the centerpiece of a mainstream phenomenon, especially if both characters are great solo characters where the woman in arguably more powerful. The screams and tantrums thrown by idiots amuses me.

What's awesome about this casting is that Kelly Marie is probably one of the very Vietnamese-American to co-star in a big film like this. I'd say she might be the only one. Whenever there is an Asia-American in a film with a hefty role (which is rare) in an American film, they're often from Chinese or Korean backgrounds.

The whole "Finn's love interest thing" comes from the fact that Finn showed romantic interest towards Rey in the TFA, but people want Rey with someone else or no one at all. So, enter Rose, who supposedly has something in common with Finn and helps him throughout the film. Seems like a reasonable assumption.

On the Disney campus, I sat in on a postproduction meeting in which Johnson was reviewing some scenes from The Last Jedi. Teams from Industrial Light & Magic, Lucasfilm’s visual-effects division, were videoconferencing in from London, San Francisco, and Vancouver. On a big screen, Poe Dameron, Isaac’s heroic X-wing fighter pilot, was back in action, coaching a gunner named Paige, a new character played by a Vietnamese actress named Veronica Ngo.

Among Johnson’s inventions for The Last Jedi are three significant new figures: a “shady character” of unclear allegiances, played by Benicio Del Toro, who goes unnamed in the film but is called DJ by the filmmakers (“You’ll see—there’s a reason why we call him DJ,” Johnson said); a prominent officer in the Resistance named Vice Admiral Holdo, played by Laura Dern; and a maintenance worker for the Resistance named Rose Tico, who is played by a young actress named Kelly Marie Tran (and who is the sister of Paige, the character I witnessed in the scene with Poe Dameron). Tran’s is the largest new part, and her plotline involves a mission behind enemy lines with Boyega’s Finn, the stormtrooper turned Resistance warrior.
