Explaining that this was a work-in-progress and it wouldn't be a part of his GDC Keynote the following morning, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison wanted a way to point at the power that the PlayStation 3 could unlock. At the conclusion of a presentation that unveiled 'Home' and the irrefutably smart LittleBigPlanet, Sony showed us Killzone. It wasn't called 'Killzone 2,' it was just called 'Killzone' and the video footage appeared to be artifacted somehow. It wasn't the clear, crisp HD footage Harrison's presentation had been populated with -- it was almost like an afterthought. It didn't look as good as the fake-footage we saw at E3 2005, but it didn't look bad, either. It was just a half-hearted show of particle effects, bullets ripping through warehouses, tearing apart kitchens and showcasing the rag doll physics in the Killzone engine. If the footage ever surfaces, it'll likely be treated as an 'engine' demonstration, but the first-person perspective, gunplay and action clearly show gameplay in some state.

Sounds a little too discouraging at the moment.

Calling it an "engine demo" means that they are embarrassed to call it in-game footage, IMO. Kind of sad, they've had a lot of time to work on this.

:down

This was one game I was really looking forward to having in my PS3 collection.

They showed off Motorstorm in much the same way last GDC didn't they?

^Yeah and look at how that turned out. :D

I'm thinking Sony is pulling somebody's chain and wanting the suspense to build just a little bit more. I mean like they said, they never told us it was Killzone 2 ;)

It could be deliberate self sabotage to lower expectations of meeting the CGI trailer. Why only show it to select few Press and not the developers. Doubly so when it was demonstrating "Play station Edge development tools" for third parties.

The Playstation Edge stuff will make its way to third parties anyway though, leaving the press to comment on what Harrison specifically said was a technological demonstration made for the devs.

Not saying that Killzone will technologically meet the CGI trailer, but the footage they did show wasn't even ratio'ed properly to be displayed on the screen apparently (according to Luke) so it sounds like they want to 'get the word out' that Killzone 2 won't look as good as the CGI trailer without actually showing footage and then when E3 rolls around (Where they will publically be showing it) they'll have the up to date version that looks better, so the press will say "Looking better/much better then when we last saw it..."

Seems like a bit of corporate maneuvering.

EXACTLY!

Why would they hype it up and say it looks better only to know that they were going to fail with expectations.

Sony is just trying to make themselves look like they are setting up for failure and then are going to shock us all.

They said the footage looked like your standard tech demo and not a trailer. :)

Something is wrong here. :D

Buy Littlebigplanet and I'll forgive you.

I don't expect it to look anything like the target footage shown previously. Still, I'd like to see it myself so I can make up my own mind.

You know I've been thinking about it a lot and i'm starting to wonder "What if Sony is just saying that Killzone 2 doesn't look good"

I mean I know it might not look like the CGI trailer, but with all the secrets and Sony hyping it saying it looks better and spending over 22 million dollars on this game alone! I'm thinking they are lieing to us.

I think what was shown to the press was not Killzone 2 just a place holder to get people expectations down. Then at E3 thats when they are going to WOW us with Killzone 2 demo and video.

Think about it, all of this controversy started at E3, by god i'm sure Sony is going to want to finish it at E3.

Plus they would have a greater variety of people at that show because its like 10X bigger.

Not at all. Sorry, but the whole "Sony is lying to us telling us their product sucks so we are even more impressed later" idea doesn't actually happen in real life. Early impressions of actual gaming is everything. If they did that, every news outlet woudl be saying how much Killzone sucks, and then when the improvements come all it is is "well killzone 2 sucked, but it's starting to get a little better."

First impressions of a game are everything. You can alienate a HUGE majority or your gaming base by releasing something that is intenionally crappy. You might be able to get a few of those gamers back when people see the improvements, but most already have it ingrained in their head that the game will suck, and no matter how many new updates are added, they will still think that.

If this game doesn't look similar/remotely close to the "Target Video," which was pre-rendered CGI IMO, then Sony just shot themselves in the foot.

People should just stop using target footage. It's never reflective of the game, and it serves only to rile those who have followed the game from day one.

But I want people to know that I have a PS3, and I'm not just some guy who's extremely negative about Sony.

I just feel that if Killzone doesn't deliver, then... well... fin.

Well, FadingCB was calling me a troll, telling me that I know nothing about Sony, and bash the PS3 continuously.

I had to prove him wrong and tell him I have one, and that I was a loyal PS2 supporter.

Who suddenly designated you the spokesperson of the gaming community, because I sure as hell didn't, so you can express your own opinion, and let everyone else speak for themselves, thanks. I personally wait for the final product, which is really the only thing that counts.

I'm guessing the lack of a post would mean no. But yeah, I don't know how many times we have to run through this before people realize that Killzone just isn't a good IP, it's devs are lacking, and Sony lies.. alot. Just get over it, this game will be par for the course (decent), at best.

It's not the end of the world.

Wow, way to get all pissy for absolutely no reason. Please, tell me one time when a company has purposefully released images of their game that look ****ty or even just lackluster only to "mess" with the fans and pull a fast one on them. A game can become improved over time, but never have I ever heard of them intentionally making their own game look bad just so it can look better later and they can say "got you!".

But you're right, it is my opinion, and you are getting bent out of shape because it's stated like fact? Everyone does that, even you I bet. I'm sure if you looked back at some of your posts you would see the exact same thing. Most people on here instantly take everything as opinion unless given proof, but not you. You must have missed that concept while climbing up on your pedastal.

kytrigger raises a very valid point and so Spidey *****es at him. And Deleted User continues to express his very biased opinion as fact. Interesting.

Oh cry me a river. It's a known fact that both of Guerilla Games' FPSes have been received with lukewarm press and are generally glitchy and underdone. Both received median scores of 6-7/10s. Call my opinion biased all you want, but it's pretty much accepted by everyone that Guerilla is a subpar developer, working on a subpar IP.

I can only see Killzone 2 being a repeat of this trend. What with the fact that there's already reports saying the visuals aren't up to par, and their previous track record. It's not a sin to admit that a game is doomed to mediocrity before it is even released.

But yeah, this is just me spinning my opinion as fact. Not using any logic at all or anything to back up anything I say. No siree-bob. Facts? ****, those things are so five minutes ago. What's in now is just saying everything on impulse and misconstruing the state of a developer and/or it's intellectual property. I also love how you don't even know me, kid.

Please, before you open your dumbass, flapping maws consider the fact that you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Good day.

everything you just said was an opinion. It's not like every "great" developer starts out amazing. No, they have to work towards it. Given how much money Sony has poured into this thing, I think it would be foolish to assume it WON'T look close to the target render in the same way that Motorstorm looks very close to its target render. THAT is logic.

They poured alot of money into Killzone as well, and that didn't exactly turn out to be anything better than mediocre. And actually, there are quite a few gaming companies who have never released big name, wholly ****ty games.

BioWare, Bungie, and the creative assembly to name a few..

PEOPLE, leave kytrigger alone... he is a good person. :)

But everyone is biased one way or another. Just calm down in here, or else it will be deleted like many Zenien threads.

:o
