Kindergarten child killed by friend's dogs

From the language used in the article, the people involved knew the dogs were vicious ones.

My gut feeling says pitbulls, but as an owner of one myself, I hope i'm wrong. I adopted mine more than 5 years ago.

Unfortunately, our species is kinda stuck with dogs at this point. There's really no humane way I can think of to start phasing them out.

We don't need to phase out dogs, just irresponsible dog owners who shouldn't have them in the first place.

We can get rid of guns, they aren't a living thing. Dogs we just have to be responsible with around children. I suppose that also could apply to guns though. Regardless, dogs are a living thing and add a lot to lives in a positive way (when trained good loving dogs).

How would you even go about doing that?

Once an owner is shown to be abusive or neglectful toward their dog, you take the dog away so it can rot in a shelter until it gets the needle?

edit: Or, before someone can own a dog, they have to enter a week-long training program, then pass a test? There are too many dogs out there for that to be in any way feasible.

People can't even control their dogs, can't expect them to be able to control their guns too

There is no easy solution to irresponsible parenting or being just irresponsible. "Phasing out dogs" is impossible. People can't even be bothered to fix the ones they own let alone start a mass culling of them.

Also gun control discussion really has no place in this thread. There are plenty of other threads to debate that in.

Seriously???!!! I've been a dog owner my entire life & never once have I had trouble with my dogs & thankfully no one else's either. You have to be responsible for the care & also your pet's behavior, you're comment is unbelievable.

My dad had a rottweiler when I was a newborn, and that dog was fiercely protective of me. Here I am 25 years later. Here its just a matter of how the owner raised the dog or a lack of caution on behalf of the kid's parent.

What could motivate the dogs to do that much damage to one of such age?
Tanner is survived by a younger sister and loved to play with monster trucks and play basketball

I think people need to know more about their pets. Educating oneself on their body language, cues, how to train/communicate with as opposed to only treating like an anthropomorphic friend all the time I think maybe should be required to own a dog in certain parts of a city if no fence or anything is around the yard. I'm not big on making extra laws about stuff but preventative measures are where it's at. Can this ever happen again? Sure. Each parent and each person owning a particular animal should follow certain cautionary guidelines I think.

I had a friend when I was a kid. They had a German Shephard that was very nice whenever any of the family was around but would be snarling, baring it's teeth with rope taught whenever you tried to approach it when they weren't. Unfortunately, an extended family member ended up getting bit and they gave him away to a local shelter somewhere. Well trained sometimes isn't enough even when they had a fence up and took the necessary precautions after seeing a potential danger. However, it can't ever hurt to try and have a system to prevent some child wandering into the dog's territory or having a specific way of managing the dog.

"Phasing out" dogs? Really? That's a suggestion? They're living, feeling beings, ffs.

I thought you were going to be like "25 years later, he's still alive."

:o

This must be really rough on the parents.

To be fair though, if a parent lets their child over someone else house they kind of expect the other adult figures to not let a dangerous breed of dog around them.
