Jonathan Stokes will pen script of 'David and Goliath' inspired tale

Though their first collaboration on the Moses tale “Exodus: Gods and Kings” doesn’t bow till December, 20th Century Fox, Chernin Entertainment and Ridley Scott are already looking to reteam on another Old Testament character, David.

Sources tell Variety that Fox has tapped Jonathan Stokes to pen an untitled pic a film inspired by the character from the “David and Goliath” tale and focusing on the King of Israel. Though the plot is under wraps, it’s likely that the film would focus on the King’s reign post-Goliath.

Going by the working title “David,” Scott would produce through his Scott Free banner and along with Chernin Entertainment.

It’s also unclear if Scott is considering directing. Scott is considering several projects for his next one following “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” including “The Martian” starring Matt Damon and the next installment of “Prometheus.”

Since this would be a large-scale undertaking in a similar vein as “Noah” and “Exodus,” Fox would likely want to wait to shoot “David” until Scott is available, but currently no director is set.

Hollywood continues to show interest in biblical characters. Besides “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” Paramount recently saw success with “Noah” which brought in $359 million worldwide including $100 million domestically.

As for Stokes, the UTA and Management SGC-repped writer has several films in development including “Murder and Acquisitions” for KatzSmith Productions.

I studied Judaism and the Bible in significant detail and there is a lot more to the story of David than his fight with Goliath.

Far more interesting is replacing Saul, helping bring the tribes together, the conquest of Jerusalem, and how he saw a beautiful woman bathing on a rooftop and started a war just so he could put her husband on the front lines thereby killing him off so that he could marry her.

About time. Amazing to me that there really hasn't ever been a huge sword-and-sandals epic film about David.

Really, really interesting to have a David vs Goliath adaption. Let's hope for more bible stories to be made as films.
I want to see Walls of Jericho :)

This could be interesting, consider me intrigued :woot:

Too bad no one wants to do a big scale film version of joshua, post moses...heck, even if you aren't religious, there are some noteworthy battles there that would translate well on screen, especially one big one in particular.

The bible is rife with the kinds of stories nerds love, man.

I can already see Kit Harington twirling his sling. :o

I agree. It's funny how such a huge character in world history hasn't been mined much yet for material.

The story of David's life is perfect for a big movie.

An epic David film is long overdue. His story from childhood to being a king to his death is a story like GOT for those who are unfamiliar with the character.
