L.A. Noire (PS3, 360) - Part 1

Just finished the game.

The ending didn't bother me so much but playing so much of the final act as Kelso felt really off and kind of detracted from the climax as we didn't get to see it as the character we started off with.

After Homicide the game did become a bit hit-and-miss.

The first Vice case was really neat, but the second was boring and the third became kind of too cluttered for its own good.

I liked the Arson cases but with Kelso being so prominent it kind of ruined any sense of payoff to the previous two cases.

Did no one pay attention to the '6 months later' in between cases in Homicide? Clearly the burglary desk etc will slot in there.

lol the chief guy clearly says he's promoting Phelps from burglary to homicide right after traffic. I think I'll find the fraud cases the most interesting though.

Hey when does the free roam start? I just got assigned my first case in homicide and the streets of la icon popped up but as of now im just being lead to a new case when does the free roam opportunity really start?

Yeah, Fraud sounds intriguing. I hope they release a good amount of DLC for this game, preferable a lot of cool varied cases and less 'here's a dead body, what happened?' scenarios.

Joystiq joked about a Who Framed Roger Rabbit DLC for the game, which I'd also accept.

Free roam is all the time, there is not a real time limit between steps in the case so feel free to go off and do whatever anytime.

The"'Streets of L.A." option is unlocked in the Cases section of the main menu (At the title screen scroll down from Resume and then go to Cases), open the folder to whichever desk you finished and the last option is the free roam. Here you can do all the side missions and look for hidden stuff.

Just finished it. My,is it difficult to be a detective,Jesus :)

OK,heres what I think in points.

Good Points
Very challenging. Pushes you intellectually and mentally. Great interrogation parts. Trying to piece clues and theories on a suspect is excellent. Loved how it captured the look and feel of old detective movies. Great characters and storytelling.

Bad Points
The game wasn't as strong as GTA IV. I didn't feel like I was totally in control of the narrative. Controls for character and vehicle are a step down from GTA IV. It felt too linear. Too short. It was just A-B you can skip C and maybe skip D and just move onto E then F-G-H type gameplay, I thought things would lead to more open choices.

All in all, I give a 8/10.

If they were to have Burglary and Fraud as separate DLCs, I wonder how much they would go for. I could see them being at least $10 each, while the individual cases like the ones from pre-orders would be about $5 each.

He compared it to GTAIV twice, so I assume he's comparing the two Rockstar affiliated games. In which case, yes, GTAIV was like a 40 hour game compared to L.A. Noire's 20, and 20 is short for a game with the Rockstar logo on the cover. But there is a lot of tedious filler in GTA and Red Dead that you must go through to advance the story, which Noire thankfully lacks.

Tedious filler? Really? I never felt like Red Dead Redemption, at least, dragged at all. The only parts that really bugged me about GTA 4 were the obnoxious phone calls from my needy 'friends' and the missions where some aspect of the controls were outright broken. Neither of those is a big issue in RDR or LA Noire.

Yeah, I think most of the people who will have a problem with this title are people who were expecting a GTA game

Man Im about to pop in RDR such a good game and it lasted me the whole summer and then some

Just got 100% completion and it was a hassle just trying to find all the different kinds of cars, which I guess shows how dedicated Rockstar was in trying to get everything right with the times. I'm trying to get all of the trophies now and the 194.7 miles one is definitely going to be time consuming. If it weren't for the DLC trophies, I'd probably be able to get Platinum soon.

Yeah, this game made me want to replay RDR reeeally bad. I may actually get Undead Nightmare now as well. :p

GTA's story was amazing, but you are forced to do so much extra stuff in between advancing the main story threads. Red Dead was better than GTA, but there were still a lot of fetch quests and plenty of "Sure I'll help you advance the story, but you have to do these 3-5 missions that have little to do with anything first."

Rockstar is getting to a point where their storytelling is much more compelling than any of their gameplay, and it is good that they seem to be streamlining and putting the filler missions on the periphery and out of the story's way. I hope this trend continues and they provide solid 15-20 hours of story, and plenty of side stuff to do if you want.

I still find GTA IV's story more compelling than Red Dead. Martson played more of an errand boy than Niko. Niko would follow orders to an extent but if he decided not to like someone, he had no qualms ****ing them up. Marston was just following orders. Sure he had motivation, but that wasn't fully explained, with the FBI agents role as antagonists, until halfway through the game. Introducing that earlier would have been much better at setting him up as a character

The only thing I don't like about GTA is I can never, ever get behind the main character. The last main character I liked was Claude from GTA III, and I think that's because he didn't talk.

I dunno, I know the point of GTA isn't to be a good guy, but I'd like to see them incorporate "redemption" if you so choose in GTA...

I couldn't stand Bully. I was like "I just finished High School, why in Christ's name would I want to go back there?"

But Niko was like that. He was tortured, just like John Martson was, but he was more self aware. John Martson was all about redemption, kept going on about it, but he's still killing a lot of people. Niko was my favourite type of character, bad ass but self loathing and tormented. He wasn't just some pumped up thug and he took no pleasure in killing except when it was personal revenge.
