Some are saying it's akin to torture in regards to what it does to the body, so I couldn't say. I don't think the dude that went in for murder and the dude that went in for petty crime should both get their internal organs burned should something jump off on the inside.

I agree with the sheriff. It's better than batons and tear gas.

The only thing I worry about with stuff like this is that I feel when Cops see it as a non lethal measure they're more likely to use it in situations where it's not really needed. Kind of like how you see people getting tazed for very minor things.

Agreed. I don't trust law enforcement with this type of technology.

If it hurts, they'll use it excessively just like tazers.

I thought it said LA was starting to become a prison which lead me to think of Escape from New York with LA with the backdrop now. But on topic, dangerous criminals or not, no one should go through something like a heat-ray unless they are named Bond.

One step closer to phaser technology.

Or batons, or guns, or fists. The whole point of a device like this is to regain control of the prisoners as quickly and safely as possible. If this can be done without the guards even entering the room, awesome! Personally, I think they should have some sort of sleeping gas set up. Riot breaks out, night-night everybody!

I hope they break out a Death Ray as the replacement to the gas chamber.

That is clearly a torture device.
Maybe they should just waterboard the saucy ones instead? Jesus. Scary.

While also possibly killing hundreds of them....

should use the puke ray, more fun

I know it would never work, given everyone's different reaction to anesthetics, but it would still be cool. If you could get it to work.

because it causes pain? then guns, tasers, mace, batons, and prison food are all torture as well.

Torture is causing pain and anguish just for the sake of it or gaining information/punishment. This isn't for either of those. Its to stop riots and fights with the least amount of injury and threat to life as possible.

The only thing I would consider to be near "torture" in a prison is solitary confinement.

Agreed. It is worth a shot.

Just FYI, every police office's policy that I have ever read has said that the taser can be used anytime a person decides to resist-that could be something as simple as not obeying commands or walking away. Also, with the taser, it hurts for a few seconds, but once its over, it is OVER. It has been proven much safer for the person resisting and for the officer than other options.
Dont get me wrong, I have seen incidents where a taser was used and I was like "wtf?" But those incidents are in the minority in my opinion. However, thats the stuff we hear about on the news and such.

^ This.

How exactly is it a torture device?
This is the definition of torture according to dictionary.com:
the act of inflicting excruciating pain, as punishment or revenge, as a means of getting a confession or information, or for sheer cruelty.
Its not like they are just selecting inmates to use this on for no reason. It is to be used to control unruly inmates and such.

There's a thin line between cooking someone to control the unruly and cooking someone to punish the unruly.

If you had one of these heaters installed in every cell and everytime an inmate refused to listen instead of a cell extraction you made them painfully hot, that would be very much like torture.

You're making someone so painfully hot they submit.

I'm pretty sure cooking someone untill their obedient is punishment and therefore torture.

and tasers, mace, and batons have been used to teach people a lesson or punishment since their introduction to the police force. No need to add a device that makes people feel like they're in the third circle of hell.

If all correctional officers were on the up and up I think more people would be understanding of the device. The problem is it's well known that a lot of correctional officers are NOT on the up and up, the simple fact that there's such wide spread drug usage in prisons prove that. It's not a stretch to think that one of two of those guys will use the device just for the hell of it.
