So i'm looking to get a new laptop and am looking for some suggestions. I'm leaning towards an HP or a Dell, but I'm open for other suggestions if anyone can really sell me.
I have a Dell now; it's 3 years old and it sucks. Time for an upgrade!
Looking to spend no more than $1,200 though, so I don't think a Mac is an option.

Yeah don't get a Dell.

Get an Apple laptop.

I have a Dell and it works fine for me.

QFT. HP and Dell suck in comparison to Apple/Mac.

I agree with these two fine gentlemen.

The way OS X utilizes memory is much, much more efficient than Windows (particularly Vista), so that 1GB of RAM in the MacBook is going to give you better bang for your buck (and RAM is mega-cheap and easy to install on your own, anyway, if you really want more). At any rate, I'm just thinking in terms of which system is more versatile and will allow you to do more with it, and that really is the Mac. You can run OS X, Windows or Linux natively or in a virtual machine environment with software like Parallels. Macs also come with a more complete complimentary software package out of the box and will run the latest Mac OS for much longer than Windows so as new OS releases come out, you'll be more likely to run them for many years to come on the Mac than you will a Windows box (Windows 7 will again require a hardware upgrade when it comes out). There is also a ton of freeware for Mac's that's very, very good, especially if you count all the programs available that have been ported from Unix/Linux that you can access using something like Fink.

The only reason if I ever get a laptop, I don't get an Apple is because a lot of my computer aided design applications don't work on Macs. :(

Sure they will. Load up Windows as a dual boot via Bootcamp or run it in Parallels and you're running your CAD stuff just fine.

My expression is like  when I read that sentence. lol

I don't like Vista either. I have XP but I have tried Vista and I don't like it. Maybe I will switch to a Mac after my current laptop.

If you get a PC I would get an HP and try to get XP on it. I also usually stick to AMD processors. Usually I end up dual booting Windows and Ubuntu Linux.

I feel like Apple users are inferior.. but it's just another brand anyways. If you have the money they're not bad machines. It really depends on what you want to do. Linux is better than all, IMO, and it's open source. I've never had any problems running it, and XP is not as bad as most Apple users will make it out to be.

Mac OS X IS Linux.

You can run Windows on an Apple system. Is that clearer?

jag

yeah. I don't know much about computers so your earlier post looked like a foreign language to me. lol

Ever since Apple start putting Intel processors in their systems they can run Windows. It's not that same as running it on a PC though. I think it runs inside of OS.X.

It will run in a virtualization machine only if you use one (like Parallels or VMware). Otherwise, with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, you can use the Bootcamp software provided by Apple to dual-boot your system to run Windows (or Linux) natively in it's own partition separately from OS X.

I just don't like how Mac's are set up and don't feel like going through the hassle of attempting to put Window's on it. I want to do as little fooling around with the hardware/software as possible. Plus I have too many programs on my current that I'd rather just transfer over, cause I know that they won't work on a Mac.

I just got a Gateway. It's okay but I HATE Windows Vista! It's so slow. My family's XP is waaay faster.

I got a built in Webcam, that is pretty unneccessary too.

But the Mac's are so cute. If I had the money I'd get one.

I have a Dell XPS1330 that I got for work and love it. It depends on what you are looking for though. It's a smaller, lighter laptop, which is what I wanted. I had a brick of a laptop before and carrying it through the airport for 30 minutes killed me. It's got a built in webcam, bioreader, and TV Tuner with remote. How I got that all put through for work I'll never figure out. :) But I love it. Vista is slower than XP but it's got alot of bells & whistles that I've come to like.

Is it even possible to get a PC now with Window XP ? I'd rather not have Vista, cause I haven't heard good things...

Wow. As I was logging into the Hype, I was just about to create a thread asking the same thing.

I would love a Mac because of how efficient it is, because Jag clearly spelled out just how good it is, and because that free iPod deal is enticing. However, the things that are hurting me are the prices (to some degree) and, mainly, the memory. I had a Macbook in mind, and even though $1,099 isn't an outrageous price (though the thought in the back of my head will be "You could get an $800 laptop instead"), the big problem that holds me back is the memory. I only need a laptop for college (writing papers, basic web surfing, and music/DVD player because I'm not into computer games), and I know I'll need more than 2GB.

Any more suggestions?

I'm pretty sure Microsoft has phased out XP, and all new computers have Vista.

Get a Mac, seriously. :word:
