Reese Witherspoon, MGM Bringing The Gang Back For ‘Legally Blonde 3’

EXCLUSIVE: MGM is near a deal with Reese Witherspoon to reprise her role as the precocious, idealistic Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 3, and they’ve brought back most of the creative team from the first film.

The pic is coming together quickly. Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, who adapted the Amanda Brown novel for the 2001 first film, are in final talks to write the script. Original producer Marc Platt and his Platt Productions president Adam Siegel are producing, and they will be joined this time by Witherspoon, through her Hello Sunshine banner.

The scribes will begin writing immediately and the next step is to secure a director. Robert Luketic helmed the original pic.

It has been 17 years since the original, and the sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde came out in 2003. But the film has been a staple for young-female audiences who’ve rediscovered it on DVD or through the hit stage musical that continues to tour. The original grossed $141 million worldwide on an $18 million budget, and the sequel brought in $124 million on a $45 million budget.

The deal gives MGM another branded title, alongside Creed and the James Bond films. Creed 2 is in production with Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Dolph Lundgren and Florian Munteanu, and Bond 25 was just firmed with Daniel Craig returning and Danny Boyle directing the script by John Hodges, and Universal releasing overseas.

They are keeping the plot under wraps, but I’m told it will be much in the spirit of the first film, in which Woods’ idealism and pink-dominant wardrobe prevailed over the cynicism and snootiness all around her after the freshly dumped former sorority sister heads to law school. The sequel brought her to D.C. to join the staff of a congresswoman to pass a bill to ban animal testing. The intention here is to make this more about female empowerment, a message that hits at a fortuitous time in the culture. The feeling is to draw back in the audience that grew up with the original film and find a new global audience.

The project reunites Smith and McCullah, who started out as a writing team before going their separate ways after generating such comedies as Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You and House Bunny. Witherspoon is repped by CAA and LBI Entertainment, Smith is with Verve and Kaplan/Perrone, McCullah is at Jaret Entertainment, and both writers are lawyered by Warren Dern.

Hey, remember that completely outdated, unfunny, racist, homophobic, "comedy" that unfortunately made Reese "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!" Witherspoon a household name? And it's even worse sequel? Well, turns out Miss Witherspoon's film career is in the dumps so what does every has-been star do? Bring back a character they were famous for and make another movie! Worked well for Renee Zellwegger and Johnny Depp.

I'm not sure....

Technically, this would be Legally Blonde 4. :o

Agreed, legally blonde is awesome! My boyfriend watched both 1 and 2 over the last few weeks. We’re so excited for a third one!

The first one was good the second not so much. And Reece is doing just fine for herself as a producer and actress (see Big Little Lies) she has always been either mediocre in her romcom or brilliant in her more fringe acting (Election she's spellbinding) so I will give her the benefit of the doubt.

She was easily the weakest of the BLL ensemble. You could’ve cast anyone and it wouldn’t be different, except probably better. She’s sticking to TV recently because she knows her career in film is over. Wrinkle was a huge flop. So was Home Again and Hot Pursuit. After making a comeback with Wild, her film career has been declining rapidly. Doesn’t help she likes to butt heads with everyone else.

Why are you so bothered? Like I said she's definitely a great producer too (BLL Gone Girl etc...)

I’m not bothered; I’m presenting an opinion. And Gone Girl wasn’t good because of her. In fact, she really wanted to play Amy but Fincher told her no, so it was either risking bad PR and fire one of the most critically acclaimed directors out there or remove herself from creative control. She did the smart choice.

What's with all the "zis is outrage!" stuff over...Legally ****in' Blonde?

I never saw either of them, but surely it's harmless enough. It's a Reese Witherspoon movie. If it's "homophobic & racist", it's probably only to the degree the extreme outrage-propagandists would judge it to be. You know, the types of people that think Jerry Seinfeld is some bomb-throwing offensive guy because he thinks college kids are sensitive.

Again: Reese Witherspoon. It's gotta be pretty tame.

I know right? It's just a ****ing harmless movie. Don't like it? Don't watch it.

It is in a way, yeah. Movies can be over-the-line, just not so sure Legally Blonde could possibly rise to that bar.

What exactly is being referred to here, like what's offensive within it? And how is it worse than just about every other comedy out there?

Love the first one. Was a hilarious movie at that time. Never watched the second one because I could tell it wasn’t as good as the first.

I personally don't care for these movies, so I'm indifferent on the whole thing. Don't know why OP is so triggered by it though.

I don't know why THIS is the sequel that broke the camels back. Legally Blonde was fine for its time. It's harmless. I never saw the second, but I am sure it is garbage. The existence of a 3rd movie I won't watch doesn't bother me.

That was a thing, wasn't it? I had forgotten about that :o

I remember really liking the first one. I know I saw the second but I don't remember it at all. Reese has done some good work as of late (she was perfect in Big Little Lies), but I hope doing this film doesn't lead to her getting typecast again. It seemed like she had a string of like 10 movies about two guys fighting over her (sometimes literally!).

And she had to drag Tom Hardy down with her, too.

If I have to guess, this will be better than the 2nd but will not surpass the magic of the first. There’s a lot they can cover especially with the prominence of feminism and the Me Too era (which I’m sure will cause passionate reactions on both sides).

On a semi-related note, I didn’t realize Reese can inspire this much outrage.:funny: You’d think she blackmailed all these people to work on these projects.

There used to be a nutjob on IMDb who was obsessed with Reese Witherspoon. Posted contant love/hate stuff about her. Apparently his obsession crossed over into his real life - he ended up getting arrested for threats made to/about her.
