Action-Adventure Legendary/Capcom developing Street Fighter film

The trades said it was partly due to scheduling conflicts, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they had creative differences with Legendary/Capcom over the film.
Probably. Wonder what those creative differences were?

As someone who loved Talk to Me and who thinks that trailer today looks pretty great, I’d honestly rather see those two spend as much time as possible in their own sandbox, rather than being almost immediately tossed out into the blockbuster filmmaking side of things.

As I mentioned previously, I am optimistic due to Sakurai’s work in Twisted Metal.

Fingers crossed.

Hard to get too excited about this without getting a better sense of what they are going for.

That being said, Highly doubt they make a March 26, 2026 release date. It's already February. They'd basically need to rush this into production to make March 2026.

Oh, well.

At least we’ll always have The Legend of Chun-Li. :o
There's only one live-action Street-Fighter movie that we acknowledge (and that I proudly have a steelbook copy of)! :D

The pic from director Kitao Sakurai had been set for March 20, 2026, but Sony’s global distribution deal with Legendary ended December 31.

Yeah, they’ll definitely have to find another studio for distribution. Maybe WB?

Universal would be a good option.

They’re riding that high from the recent popularity of Wicked, their Despicable Me/Minions films do gangbusters and, putting aside what you think of the film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, another video game film adaptation, made over $1 billion and already has a sequel in the works. Also, the Fast and Furious franchise, which has done very well for them for over the past two decades, is pretty much on its way out the door next year, so they need another big and successful four-quadrant, crowd-pleasing blockbuster property to get people’s butts in seats.

Aside from Disney, they are one of the only other companies I can think of producing films with global mass appeal that do really well at the box office, and Street Fighter, whose entire premise is about fighters from various countries with different backgrounds from around the world participating in a fighting tournament, is at it’s core a global property.

If Universal got their hands on the distribution for this and played their cards right, it could be the next Fast and Furious. It’s pretty much a no-brainer.

I'm gutted with this news but I really don't think Street Fighter has anywhere near the brand recognition required to become a major studio franchise.

And that’s why I suggested Universal as a distributor, because they’re good at advertising and could give it more brand recognition. Big names/star power also go a long way, as well. These types of things don’t always need to be super well-known in order to become successful, only that people need to have at least a passing knowledge of who they are. I guarantee you that most of the general population, if you were to ask them about Street Fighter, they would be like, “Oh yeah, that’s the one game with the guy in the red headband and white karate outfit and the blonde guy in the red outfit, and they use both of their hands to shoot fireballs, and there’s this one Asian chick with Princess Leia hair and a blue dress that can kick really fast and spin her legs like a helicopter right at you while upside down.” A lot of people just pick up this kind of stuff through osmosis, even if they don’t realize it.

Just look at the Sonic films. Its original premise is basically a blue cartoon hedgehog that runs really fast, collects gold rings and defeats an evil scientist, and they’ve made over 1 billion total. That character is now arguably the most popular and in the best place he’s been since he was first introduced over 30 years ago.

If they marketed this towards and were able to bring over that Fast and Furious audience, it could be their next big hit. They did it with a cartoon rodent, they can do it with a bunch of colorful characters fighting each other.

Just spitballing here, but what if a streaming service gets the film like Netflix or Amazon.

Netflix has already done titles like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, and other games.

Just a thought, would rather it comes to theatres.

These are all solid points. The franchise's built-in longevity, spin-off potential, and merchandising opportunities add to that. With the right talent attached, this is a no-brainer for any studio looking for its next big franchise.

And that’s why I brought up Fast and Furious as a comparison:

1) It’s got a large cast of distinct, memorable and colorful characters with diverse backgrounds

2) Multimedia opportunities like spin-offs, comics, TV shows (animated, live-action, anime), audio dramas, etc., which F&F did dabble in a bit

3) Globetrotting to different locations around the world

4) Ridiculously over-the-top, heightened action

5) Like you said, merchandise (action figures, play-sets, breakfast cereal, etc.)

6) Dabbles in various genres, like action, thriller, heist, mystery, romance, horror, buddy comedy, etc.

Also, now that I’m thinking about it as I’m typing this out, not saying that this is on the same level as that, but it almost could take a similar approach to the model that Star Wars has been using for about the last 10 years (irrespective of their quality), in that it can completely shift focus to other characters, places and times and not have to stay completely linear. The scope of the world is so vast you can just jump around and tell various stories from the perspective of other characters at various points in it’s history.

Like, how wild would it be if you got someone on the level of Tony Gilroy to oversee a conspiracy/espionage thriller streaming series centered around a character (someone we’re more familiar with, less known, completely unknown, etc.) investigating M. Bison and Shadaloo and his illegal methods and experiments to create soldiers to infiltrate the government and take over the world, and Cammy shows up to help the organization down? Or a romantic/action/drama/comedy with Ryu and Chun-Li? A mockumentary in the vein, style and tone of something like “What We Do in the Shadows” centered around Dan and his “journey” to become the world’s “greatest” fighter, directed by Taika Waititi?

Probably a complete pipe dream, but it’s fun to imagine the possibilities.

I would definitely be looking at Andrew Koji for Ryu. And as the lead.
This, all day. He’s got the skills, the charisma, the everything.

Andrew Koji would have been a good choice for Ryu but I'm sure they're going younger for his casting. He should have a role somewhere in this though, in fact much of the crew from Warrior should be involved in this.

Please be true! I LOVED Koji on Warrior!!!!!

Great casting on both, if true. Koji was amazing on Warrior and Centineo was great on The Recruit. Never heard of Nexus Point News though so I don’t know if this is reliable at all.
