I know this was posted in the RIP thread, but I figured it deserve it's own. Since he was a great director.

Sidney Lumet, the American film director known for inspiring top-notch performances from actors in a stream of classic films including "Network," "Serpico," "12 Angry Men" and "Dog Day Afternoon," died on Saturday at age 86.

Lumet's death was confirmed by Marc Kusnetz, who is the husband of Lumet's stepdaughter, Leslie Gimbel. Lumet's stepdaughter, Leslie Gimbel, told The New York Times Lumet died of lymphoma at his home in Manhattan.

Lumet was nominated for Academy Awards four times as a director. He never won, but he did receive an honorary lifetime achievement Oscar in 2005.

"Network," a scathing view of the television business, proved to be his most memorable film and created the enduring catch phrase, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

Many of his films, including "Serpico" and "Dog Day Afternoon," showed the grittier side of New York City.

His movie directing debut was 1957's "12 Angry Men," starring Henry Fonda.

This guy is one of my favorite directors. Easily one of the greatest who ever lived. I remember first seeing 12 Angry Men when I was in 7th grade (100 years ago), and just being completely blown away by how I was 12 years old, and I was in love with this quiet, slow-paced, 1957 movie that all my fellow students were snoring over. That's the mark of a master - the fact that all of his movies still have a modern day, fresh atmosphere to them... He'll never be equaled.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better resume than this:

12 Angry Men (1957)

Serpico (1973)

Murder on the Orient Express (1974)

Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

Network (1976)

The Wiz (1978)

Prince of the City (1981)

The Verdict (1982)

Running on Empty (1988)

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007)

RIP. One of the best directors ever. :csad:

Yeah, when I was a kid we used to have 12 angry men on quite a lot, Dog Day Afternoon as well.
I didn't realise he directed Running On Empty, I always liked that movie a lot, I would catch it on tv every few years.
Network and Serpico being the other two movies I know of his I like a lot.

R.I.P. Sidney Lumet

People, Dog Day Afternoon and network rocks. Seriously.

He made some of the greatest films ever. RIP

He was truly a master of his craft, his body of work speaks for itself.
R.I.P Sidney. :csad:

Rest in Peace Sidney, you were one of the best. :csad:

Network is one of the most brilliant movies I've ever seen.

Wow, this is sad news :csad:

Brilliant director. I read the book he wrote about directing, and it was a great and informative book. The man was a genius.

Rest in Peace Mr. Lumet. He made one of the greatest films I've seen (12 Angry Men) among other classics like Dog Day Afternoon. I recently watched Murder on the Orient Express. Any director would wish for a resume like his.

Even in his 80's, he showed us he still had the edge. "Before the Devil..." was a great film, and a good way to end a career. RIP Mr. Lumet.

One of the greatest directors of all time. His ability as an actors director is almost unparallelled.

This was a genuine loss for cinema. R.I.P.

R.I.P. Sidney Lumet, one of the finest directors to ever exist :(

Sidney Lumet was one of the last of his kind. An old school of filmmaking dies with him. I liked how contemporary and fresh his most recent film, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead was, whilst still being infused with an old school approach to filmmaking. I was looking forward to more films by his (always unobtrusive but masterful) hand. But I guess we'll have to make due with all those amazing classics he made.

Dog Day Afternoon and 12 Anrgy Men are two of my favorite films of all time. I'm a big fan of Serpico too. RIP, Mr Lumet. We've lost an amazing talent.

Sydney Lumet died?

I'm mad as hell.

That's pretty much everyone involved with the Wiz dead (except Diana Ross).

RIP.
