Having just finished rereading Zero Hour: Crisis in Time for the first time in years I fancy giving the LoSH a try (I've never read their own title). Initially I'm after stuff that leads up to Zero Hour (and the changes that follow - pocket universe, no Superboy or Supergirl, the introduction of Andromeda).

How far back from Zero Hour would I have to go to be able to pick things up? Are there any collections you can recommend?

Thanks.

I recommend the "5 Years Later" LOSH stuff by Keith Giffen and Tom & Mary Bierbaum.

Outside of a few silver age Legion stories, I'd never read a single Legion book until I found the first 12 issues of the Five Years Later stuff, along with Annual #1 and 2 at a comic con for a buck each.

It's post-Crisis, and the first 4-5 issues are pre-No Superboy. After that begins the slow world building of making Mon-El the hero that inspired the formation of the Legion. This would be Legion of Superheroes vol. 4. It's referred to as the Five Years Later LOSH because it begins 5 years after the Magic Wars arc that ended out the previous volume. Vol. 4 is what leads up to and continues through Zero Hour.

It's not exactly new reader friendly, and I spend a lot of time online trying to figure out whose who, but those 12 issues were fan-freakin'-tastic. Unfortunately, no collections from this period exist. But I held off on buying any back issues past 12 because I've been reading rumors that next year, DC is going to be rolling out a whole bunch of Legion collections.

That said, DC released a few silver age omnibus books that will likely have TPB versions coming out soon. The Great Darkness Saga by Paul Levitz is also considered one of the greatest LOSH stories ever told, but I've never read it.

That sounds like exactly what I'm after! Thank you so much

I'll keep my eyes open for those collections!

The Great Darkness saga is the best Legion story ever.

Also, and you can get this as a tpb is "An eye for an eye" classic Legion stuff, very enjoyable and emotional.

Won't give any spoilers away on that one.
