John Hillcoat and Christian Bale are both understandably in need of a career jolt. Hillcoat made the elegant and heartbreaking film adaptation of The Road that came and went last fall with barely any notice, while Bale's reputation as a fearless and talented actor got a little muddle with back to back generic performances in Terminator: Salvation and The Dark Knight.

Can the two of them set things right by teaming up? We can sure hope so. Bloody Disgusting has heard from screenwriter Mark L. Smith that his period project The Revenant is in development with Anonymous Content, and that Hillcoat is attached to direct with Bale in talks to star. According to CHUD, this may be the same project that surfaced last year with Samuel L. Jackson and Park Chan Wook, though it's nearly unimaginable how different it might be this time around. Bale's character would be a 19th century frontiersman who is left to die by his friends after being mauled by a bear, and eventually sets out to take his revenge on them.

Many people know Hillcoat from his period Australian western The Proposition, and it sounds like The Revenant might be a chance for Hillcoat to demonstrate those same skills for a slightly larger audience. And Bale, for all his flaws when wearing the cape and cowl of Batman, is still a magnetic actor worth watching any time. Hillcoat got great work out of the equally intense Viggo Mortensen in The Road, and I'm dying to see what he and Bale can come up with together.

This really sounds up my alley. I love Hillcoat & Bale. :woot:

"For all his flaws..."

This implies multiple problems with his performance as Batman, which I think is an unfair generalization. I hate the voice, but I think he does a great job with showing the right emotion in his eyes as well as the right intensity for the character.

Hopefully this project gets made.

The guy, who wrote that article is the one in need of a career jolt! The Road and TDK where great films. Just because Terminator wasn't the best of films doesn't mean Bale's career is in need of a jolt. I mean his not Nicholas Cage who hasn't been in a decent movie in years, execept for Bad Lietenant.

I don't think Bale needs a career jolt. Making one bad film in your career won't kill you.

This sounds good.

I mean being attacked by a bear sounds a bit comedic and random, but this could be awesome if you think about it more. Imagine Bale walking in the woods all woodsman like, beard and all, with an axe and rifle. Hell yeah!

Hopefully this movie doesn't get put on the backburner or get stuck in development hell. As others have already said, Bale being in one subpar/bad movie(TS)isn't going to screw up his career. I love to see him take roles like these(can't wait to see The Fighter)that truly show his acting skills.

Other than the Batman films I prefer Bale to not take big budget summer action films like TS. With those scripts(even the fairly good ones), it's never a character with enough range to show off the actor's talent. Obviously there are better summer action characters than others but overall I don't recall many that were ever deep.

Yeah, I found that to be a load of horse****. The only flaw I really saw in his performance wasn't even his fault. The editors altered his voice in TDK and made it sound over the top and stupid.

Generally true, although I am looking forward to DiCaprio in Inception.

Wow, that is a slanted/ obviously biased article, who wrote it?

I should have clarified. When it comes to Nolan doing so called summer films which Batman technically is, they tend to be a bit smarter than the rest. Especially when you compare a film like TS, directed by McG, to one of Nolan's Batman films or even Inception for that matter. I know I haven't seen Inception yet but coming from Nolan I don't expect it to be as typical, stupid or subpar as a lot of other summer films.

I don't know about the movie itself, but Leo looks like he brought it. There's a few clips that show some pretty emotional stuff but completely believable.

Now this sounds like a terrific project. Although not a a big fan of the Road (but i dont have any problem with the direction) , i love The Proposition.

Too bad the OP had to break this news to us with such a moronically negative item....it's obscuring the truly AWESOME news. :D

Yeah, that's the problem with journalism today. Too much editorializing and not enough reporting. :csad:

But you are right, this is awesome news. Hopefully they are able to make this movie. :woot:

Sounds like a great idea for a movie, i will be keeping an eye out for this one.

This is a great pairing and I like the premise. Neither of these guys are in need of a jolt , lol , but more people should see The Road.

This sounds like a great project. Hillcoat's The Road is vastly underrated and it could be a fantastic vehicle for Bale.

Not that Bale's career is in shambles or anything. Terminator Salvation was a stumbling block yes, but he's not worse off like the biased writer of this article suggests.

Sounds pretty good, although obviously somewhat vague. Overall premise is sweet though.

I know this is sort of off-topic, but does anyone know what's up with Hillcoat's Red Dead Redemption short that's coming up? Apparently the guy directed together bits and pieces of the game to create a TV episode or something. I simultaneously found about the Red Dead project and this project, and I thought it was interesting for the director to have two bits of big news in the same day. It's also kinda neat that a Hollywood director is tackling a literal game, and not a game to film adaptation.

But yeah, way off topic...so back on topic...loving the strangely biased/opinionated article. LOL :woot:

John Hillcoat needs to take charge and bring back spaghetti westerns to this world...he did the half hour short of Red Dead Redemption coming to FOX this saturday at midnight

I was reading about another Bale project when I came across this (How did I miss this thread in May? :huh) and I think it sounds fantastic, the ideal project to do after Batman 3.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu Attached to Direct Warner's 'The Revenant' (Exclusive)

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is attached to direct Warner Bros.' "The Revenant," a revenge story set in the 1800s, an individual close to project confirmed to TheWrap.

The director of "Biutiful" and "Babel", Inarritu gravitates toward foreboding, character-driven stories. And this qualifies.

In "The Revenant," a fur trapper is mauled by a bear. The captain of his ship tries to carry him back to civilization, but the terrain is impossible, and he can't do it. So the captain hires two men to stay behind and bury him after he dies.

Instead of making his last days comfortable, the men rob him and leave to die alone in the cold. He survives and heads off to seek his revenge.

The movie is based on Michael Punke's novel. Mark L. Smith wrote the screenplay. Akiva Goldsman is producing via his Weed Road Pictures.
