Production Weekly is reporting that Leonardo DiCaprio is looking to produce a reboot of the classic 1983 sci-fi hacker film WarGames. The original WarGames is a great geek flick, a flashback to the days when a 1200 baud modem was fast, and capable of destroying the world. Plus, this is a movie which features the first cinematic reference to a “firewall”. But could the story be updated to modern times without becoming the mess that was The Dead Code? I’m not quite sure.

Last year, MGM released a horrible direct-to-dvd sequel/spin-off/remake called WarGames: The Dead Code. The film was basically a modern remake, starring Matt Lanter as a computer geek named Will Farmer who engages a government super-computer named R.I.P.L.E.Y. and enters in a game of online terrorist-attack simulation which is part of a sophisticated piece of government spyware designed to find potential terrorists. Homeland Security, now believing Farmer is a terrorist, sets out to apprehend him. And the computer, of course, forgets that it’s just playing a game. The film was horrible, currently rated 4.4 by users on Internet Movie Database (you can watch the trailer if you dare in our previous posting).

DiCaprio has a lot of spinning plates on his table, including a big screen live-action adaptation of Akira, the story of Atari, an adaptation of Kurt Eichenwald’s Conspiracy of Fools, and we havent gotten past the letter C. It’s more than likely that this project won’t see the light of day outside of some development.

As long as he doesn't appear in the movie. But I don't see this movie needing a reboot but I can see it being good as well.

Seth Gordon Takes WarGames

June 23, 2011

Seth Gordon has become attached to a big-screen remake of the 1983 John Badham film WarGames, Deadline reports.

The original film starred Matthew Broderick as a young computer genius who hacks into a government system and, thinking it all a game, accidentally initiates a computerized countdown to a nuclear weapons launch.

Gordon, no stranger to video games, is still best known for his documentary King of Kong. He subsequently helmed the romantic comedy Four Christmases and directed the upcoming Horrible Bosses at Warner Bros.

An MGM film, WarGames received a direct-to-DVD sequel in 2006 with WarGames: The Dead Code.

Looks like a useless remake to me.
They just can't beat Joshua/WOPR.

Noah Oppenheim has been brought aboard the upcoming remake of the 1983 John Badham film WarGames, Deadline reports.

The original film starred Matthew Broderick as a young computer genius who hacks into a government system and, thinking it all a game, accidentally initiates a computerized countdown to a nuclear weapons launch.

Seth Gordon is still attached to direct. No stranger to videogames, he's best known for his documentary King of Kong and, more recently, helmed Horrible Bosses at Warner Bros.

While Oppenheim has not yet had a completed screenplay reach the big screen, he's behind some major upcoming projects, including Jackie, The Secret Life of Houdini and the remake of Snabba Cash.

An MGM film, WarGames received a direct-to-DVD sequel in 2006 with WarGames: The Dead Code.

Israelite Offers "WarGames" Remake Update

By Garth Franklin Saturday July 26th 2014 10:54AM
Filmmaker Dean Israelite is the director behind the upcoming found footage time travel film "Project Almanac" which was screened the other night at Comic Con. Israelite was on hand at the screening and briefly discussed another project he's a part of - the upcoming remake of 1983 classic "War Games".
Asked about the challenge of creating a new version of such a well-regarded cult smash, Israelite tells io9:
"We're rewriting the script right now and I think we're coming on to something that could be very cool and trying to be its own movie. It's gotta be its own movie for its own time and take the spirit of what the original was. The original was so cool because it was bold and provocative and sophisticated for that time, so we need to take the spirit of that, make our own complete movie that's hopefully bold and sophisticated for this time and that they will stand alone."
Israelite confirms that working on "Project Almanac" has helped him a lot, both with the authenticity of the technology and the mannerisms and personalities of the teen characters in the remake:
"I think it was a great lesson. Also just being around young people the whole time on this movie and honestly looking at them all the time when they're working on set with me, they're so wired in in a fascinating way and it's helped me try bring a reality to WarGames, I think so, yeah. And also open my eyes to a bunch of different – like, I didn't subscribe to Wired until I did Project Almanac and now that started influencing me a lot while I was doing Project Almanac. I feel like I'm in that world a little bit in a cool way."
In terms of the technology we'll see in use, he says the plan is to "be a little bit ahead of its time like the first one was" which is why they're talking to experts and consultants to give them an idea of what's about to come. Finally, and the big question that he admits everyone asks, is Russia the enemy?
"No because the answer is, it's a different time so, all I will say is that the antagonists in the movie are completely different to the first one. You can't compare it. We're not in the Cold War, it's not about that. It's about something different."
