Les Miserables: One Thread More!

So apparently the cast (wonder how many?) is going to perform at the Oscars. No specifics yet. Look at Anne's husband in the back checking his phone LOL.

On my own? Not any more, says Les Miserables' Eponine!

Samantha Barks, who plays Eponine in the hit movie Les Miserables, wasn’t able to join in the film’s triumph at the Golden Globes because she’s in a touring production of Oliver!
But the young actress will be given permission to leave the tour a few days early so she can perform at the Oscars.

It’s still being decided what song will be sung, but Samantha will participate with other cast members such as best actor nominee Hugh Jackman, best supporting actress front-runner Anne Hathaway, heart-throb Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried and others in one of the rousing crowd numbers — One Day More or Do You Hear The People Sing.

The other idea being discussed is to have a medley with, perhaps, Anne performing an excerpt of I Dreamed A Dream (which she sings with heart-breaking raw emotion in the picture); Samantha coming in with On My Own; Hugh giving us his Who Am I? or Bring Him Home, and so on.

Nothing, however, has been decided. The Oscar creative team have to work out how other numbers work within the ceremony’s framework.

For instance, Adele is performing the theme from Bond film Skyfall, but whether that’s being staged as a stand-alone song or as part of the Academy’s tribute to 50 years of 007 is still being mulled over.

But back to Samantha. She finished the Dublin leg of the Oliver! tour last weekend. This week, she and the rest of the cast have a short break.
Samantha auditioned for various projects before scooting off to Florida to perform at a retreat for executives from NBC-Universal. She then returns to Oliver! at the Bristol Hippodrome on January 22. She was due to finish on February 24.

However, Oliver’s producer Cameron Mackintosh has allowed her to leave early, so she can travel to Los Angeles to rehearse for the Oscars instead.

Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne and Anne Hathaway attended the Golden Globes and will be joined with Barks for the Oscars

Mackintosh, who also controls the Les Mis stage show, produced the film with Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan from Working Title, and Debra Hayward.
He wasn’t at the Beverly Hilton when Les Mis won for best musical or comedy film, and Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman took home trophies. He had back trouble, so was unable to fly.

It was fitting, though, that Les Mis’s composer, librettist and lyricist (respectively) Claude-Michel Schonberg, Alain Boublil and Herbert Kretzmer were on hand to witness the joy.

And there’s a lot of joy: the film, which is directed by Tom Hooper, has taken £13  million in the UK in just one week; and 12 times that amount in the rest of the world.

Fellner noted audiences are strongly drawn to it. ‘It has themes that have survived for 150 years, starting with Victor Hugo’s novel, then the show for three decades, and now the film.

‘People are aware of the music, and are drawn to see the film. It’s more accessible than the stage show, but I believe once they’ve seen the film, they are more likely to seek out the show at the theatre.

‘It’s proving to be a very emotional engagement for the audience.’

Fellner praised his whole cast, but observed Samantha had been a particular surprise, given she had never been on a film set before.

‘I happened to be at the studio when she did her costume and make-up tests, and I was struck by her confidence.

'You’d expect an actor or actress who had never been in front of cinematic cameras to be nervous, but she was like an old pro.

‘She was at home, and it’s clear she loves what she does. She doesn’t have fear or failure in her make-up,’ he told me.

Indeed, when I visited Pinewood I also noticed how she and the camera were comfortable together. Samantha has a great career ahead of her, but she won’t just be doing musicals.

She wants to do ‘straight’ acting, as well as singing roles.

To that end she won’t be doing the musical film Walking On Sunshine, opposite Kylie Minogue, because she doesn’t want to be typecast as just a musical performer.

Cast members singing at the Oscars? Bring. It. On.

And I remember making that 'yes' caption thingy up there. :D

So I saw it second time today. Noticed much more things, I appreciated the first half of the movie more than last time and I didn't find any boring scenes, "drink with me" and "bring him home" worked just fine. And this time I didn't read the subtitles at all and was struck by just how good the acting really was! Absolutely amazing!

A couple of people walked out of the cinema during the finale. If I should ever discover who were they, we will have a very long conversation.

I love his Twitter. A lot more interesting than usual celebrity crap.

And I've officially become addicted to Les Mis. I remember a time when I couldn't care less about it. Now I listen to songs everyday :p

He's awesome on Twitter. The stuff he was posting while Les Mis was filming was hilarious.

I hope this news about a soundtrack is true. I love the current version, but the amount of stuff missing drives me crazy.

Anne won best supporting actress at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards.

I think she's won every award out there. She wasn't there but producer Debra Hayward accepted and read an acceptance speech that Anne texted. And finally DDL lost one - to Joaquin Phoenix. The only thing Hugh has won so far is the Golden Globe (and I wouldn't be surprised if that was it).

Which takes us to a reminder that the SAG Awards are next Sunday Jan. 27.

If I go see this...will it affect my manhood?
'Cause where I'm from, if you like musicals, you're considered beyond fruity.

I didn't make the rules, I was just thrown into them lol

Screw that though, I'm gonna go see it!

Come to think of it, Tom Hooper is going to have his second consecutive Oscar winning performance under his belt, and Spielberg is going to have his first after some 30-odd years or so. People who trash Hooper as a mediocre director need to at least give him some credit for that.

I didn't know Samantha was 25 % black, but her hair totally told the story when they got wet in the movie :cwink: . I wonder what does she look like when she comes from shower.

Didn't know that either, I actually thought she's like half Asian- or rather Pacific Islander considering "Asian" isn't exactly a race.

I'm sure Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Donald O'Connor and those great singers and dancers of old would agree. :whatever:

To quote Hugh:
"The idea that singing and dancing is not masculine is one of the craziest things I have ever heard in my life. I don't know how exactly in history that got off track...but 50 years ago if you were a man who couldn't dance, basically you would never get a girl," Jackman said backstage at the Beverly Hilton yesterday.

The only thing Hugh has won so far is the Golden Globe (and I wouldn't be surprised if that was it).

But Golden Globe is more worth than most of the critics awards, which are usually titled "the critics circle from the southwest corner of Utah" or whatever ...

And Sally Fields has five supporting actor awards in her bag, which means Anne HAS lost some of those ... and Amy has actually 8 such awards. According to Wikipedia, Hathaway has lost 7 nominations. So she wasn't even nominated for every damn ward out there.

All that point reminded me of is, man the Academy really is unfairly cold to Spielberg. :oldrazz:

But yes, while visually Hooper is pretty boring, he is good at casting and getting great performances out of the talent in his movies.

Then you should travel more.

By the way, I wouldn't recommend continuing the "musicals=gay" argument here.

If your "manhood" is affected by a movie, it doesn't sound like it exists to begin with.

By the way, one of the most heterosexual, staunchly conservative Republican guys I know loves musicals and has been to see Les Mis three times.

I've seen 30 shows on Broadway, and I'm all about the ladies. :fingerguns:
