I had an idea about Spider-man unmasking. It wouldn't happen in a million years but do you think it would have been more fair to everybody to let the fans vote on unmasking or not? I know that it has it's flaws (too many non Spidey fans would vote, it rips off Jason Todd or whatever) but I just wanted to hear other opinions.

A nation-wide vote woulda been cool. And I don't think it's been done since Marvel vs. DC.

it would end up like Jason Todd in Batman...one guy would just call a million times and it would throw off the vote.

But that's how it becomes a true election! Just ask Bush.

I say - UnMask.
I say - Keep it on.

Come on, I know a lot, if not - all of you at one time or another thought:
"wouldnt it be cool to see what everybody's reaction to what would happen if Peter took off the mask. Without it being a 'What-If' for once?"

No I don't think fans shoudl decide at all. For one we have no idea just how many different story ideas will result of him unmasking. I'm pretty sure Marvel has has an idea of what they can do. Another thing is that having fans decide just further builds up the situation of fans wanting the things to always stay the same when they simply can't because Spider-man doesn't exist inside of a bubble. Things have to change and evolved and having a vote for fans would just get in the way of that. After all you just read it and most likely while fans say they would hate certain things, majority of most likely going to keep buying. Either out of habit or maybe because the changes aren't that big of a deal. That's an interesting concept that some people don't dare think about I believe. Marvel doesn't really owe anyone a chance to vote or even a say so on the matter I think. As much as that sucks it's the way things are I think. Spidey is their character, to do with what they want. That is unless some of us own a large share in Marvel stock but don't think that's the case.

Also you just know some fans will just call in thousands of times to swing the vote or do something to throw it off.

No. Not once. Ever.

Nope. I always knew that, iif it were to happen, that we would get a year of interesting, dynamic stories immedaitely following his unmasking....and that would be it. Spider-Man as we know him would be dead. There's no unringing that bell. You have to ahve some "magical" solution" or "cosmic crisis" or "retcon punch" or somethign to fix it...and those solutions are ALL STUPID.

If you buy Civil War #2 for the sole purpose of having that issue where Spdiey's identity is made public, and you're doing it to turn around and sell it, then you'd better do it quickly, seeing as how one of those "stupid" solutions I mentioned will be used to erase it later on.

I admit it... I have wanted to know what the reactions would be... :O

BUT

I wouldn't want it to last, and I would want the undoing of it to be a great part of the story, not just a lame thing stuck on at the end. It is vital that the characters act IN CHARACTER. And it would need to be told from the get go with the end in mind... so we don't end up with some convoluted story that trys to "fix" it when the fans revolt.

To actually say... lets do away with the secret ID, see how everyone reacts and make Peters life a living hell... if THAT is the plan... then, like killing the golden goose, they'll get an initial payday, and then it's over.

Well, when fans voting comes to mind I always think about poor Jason Todd, heh.

The writers of the Batman comics at the time were actually calling up and voting for him to be killed. THE CREATORS!!!

It would be a crazy vote and actually quite interesting to see which way it would go. But it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the vote would lean toward keeping the mask on.

As I've said in other threads. If Spider-Man fans practically had strokes over an exact replica of himself replacing him...then they aren't going to really take to a lot of the other unexplored parts of the Spidey mythos, like Spider-Man unmasking, too well.

However, there is no vote. And they ARE doing it. So, it's all good in the hood.

That transition would have been easier if they hadn't said the replica was the real one.

And as I've said, I honestly still never saw what difference it made. They are the same exact guy, clone or not. I don't blame people being upset but people were like...venomous. Trust me, I remember what it was like in the comic shops back then.

It really reminds me of this place a whole lot. :o

Genetically, yes, they are the same.
But Ben's 5 years on the road, made him a little different.
He is more outgoing, confident, happy, carefree.
Pete's a whiney lil B****.
Plus Ben was continuously tinkering with his web-shooters, improving them, making newer and better weapons. He was using his brain, something Pete somewhere along the line forgot how to do.

Well, the writers were purposely doing that so that the readers would like Reilly more and make the replacement easier.

But, you know Spider-Man fans, haha. Didn't matter. Ben's dust now and it's in the past.

I know.
But i also know that for some reason - story wise - Ben was the only one to turn to dust.
Why?
Cause Ben isn't really dead.

He turned to dust because Marvel wanted to show that Ben was really the clone all along and Pete was the real deal, that Norman had been seriously messing with them. 'Tis why Ben disintegrated...to please the pissed off Spider-Man fans.

I miss Ben.:(

Yeah, I miss Reilly a whole lot too. I miss the improvements to the web shooters. I miss the Daily Grind crew and Ben's impending relationship with the daughter of the crook who killed Uncle Ben.

But, hey, the pissed off Spidey fans got their wish and us minority of fans got the shaft.

I'm more angry that it is completely dismissed from the Marvel books now. I haven't heard it emntioned in awhile.

Well, it NEVER got mentioned until recently. In Mark Millar's Marvel Knights run he mentioned Ben Reilly, there was even some nice Ben Reilly artwork by the Dodson's, and they mentioned Baby May.

And in Dan Slott's Spider-Man/Human Torch miniseries Spidey mentioned to Johnny Storm that some of the adventures they went on as a team, that some of them were his clone, heh.

And it's been mentioned here and there. There was a joke Spidey cracked in New Avengers and in Amazing Spider-Man. But they're usually jokes.

They never have Pete or MJ think about the DAUGHTER they possibly could have had. I believe that's something that could never leave the mind of a married couple. How Pete couldn't think of Ben Reilly on occassions even though they were pretty much like brothers when Ben died.

I agree, heh.

It's so stupid for Marvel to have ignored this part of the mythos because some Spider-Man fans are insane.
