Defining gem, alright: a film that is not known by everyone and maybe it should be, because it's good. Very good.

Do you have any..? DVD, VHS, all formats included :o

So, I should mention a couple movies I can think of right now..

Onibaba

fe82dcd9.jpg

Onibaba (鬼婆, Onibaba literally Demon Woman) (1964) is a Japanese horror film based on a Buddhist parable. Directed by Kaneto Shindō, the film is set in rural Japan in the fourteenth century and features Nobuko Otowa and Jitsuko Yoshimura as a woman and her daughter-in-law who attack and kill passing samurai, strip them of their valuable armor and possessions, and dispose of the bodies in a deep pit.

This movie is great. It's a bit odd, it feels odd, everything's odd, I'm odd. Still, it's supposed to be horror, but I don't know--it's more like a thriller. A thriller in the reeds. The quoted text pretty much explains it all but you should know that not everything's explained. So after watching the movie you might be doing some research. I first heard of this movie while checking IMDb top horror films.

Spoorloos

The Vanishing (dutch: Spoorloos) is a French/Netherlands film adaptation of the novella The Golden Egg by Tim Krabbé, released October 27, 1988. Directed by George Sluizer, the film is about a young Dutch girl named Saskia Wagter (Johanna ter Steege) who disappears from a rest stop along a highway in rural France; her lover, Rex Hofmann (Gene Bervoets), cannot accept her disappearance and embarks on an obsessive search for her spanning years.

This one is also great. It looks like it was made for 2 dollars but it manages to give you the chills. Most of you would know its american remake, The Vanishing, made by the same guy who directed the original. If you seen the remake, go find the original. It's actually good.

La Jetée

La jetée (english: The Jetty and The Pier) (1962) is a 28-minute black and white science fiction film by Chris Marker. Constructed almost entirely from still photos, it tells the story of a post-nuclear war experiment in time travel.

This one is a short film, fascinating.. in a way. Ok, I tend to exaggerate my statements, heh. Anyway, it's very good, the kind of story I like, and it was also the inspiration behind 12 Monkeys.

Let's see what you have (hopefully, I'll get some lenghty replies with this one :oldrazz:)

I read the book some years ago and loved it! So I searched IMDb immediately after it to see if there's movie made of it. Downloaded Spoorloos, but I never watched it till the end. I was very disappointed because it took so many liberties from the book in beginning. I think I should watch the movie now again 'cause the book ain't in my fresh memory anymore.

I've got a film called Danger: Diabolik, which is an adaptation of an Italian comic-book made in the 60's by Mario Bava. Its really worth a look if your a fan of 60's films like the Connery Bonds. The cinematography and set design is suberb, and its got a great vibe to it.

I've seen that. It's really only worthy of the MST3K version. 90% of the things Diabolik is able to do is because he gets lucky.

You can watch La Jetee on YouTube. Really worth checking out.

Citizen Dog is a wonderful Thai movie that I reccomend.

Can we include american movies? Diner is a little gem i have.

Tyler is a restless, streetwise 21-year-old Hong Kong native who's had trouble gaining the trust of others all his life. He secretly fantasizes about living the good life in South America. After a while, he is forced to deal with the reality of impending fatherhood. Hankering for quick cash, however, he joins a bodyguard company. Later, he makes friends with a once disillusioned mercenary determined to begin life in a new way. However, their companionship is brief: they both are uncontrollably forced toward opposite sides of a deadly showdown

Haha I recently just found my VHS copy of Titan A.E. Very good sci-fi animated movie IMO. Perhaps not obsure and unknown enough though.

I remember the toon version of Diabolik.

I mean I have every old Disney film on Tape and i consider those gems, i like the grainy quality and timelessness. DVD doesnt do old school disney very much. Oh and I have a VHS of The Masked Phantasm.

Please people, keep it obscure and lesser known--my thread, my rules :word: :hehe:

If you noticed, all new movies now are so CRISP AND CLEAR.

I was watching a movie from the 90s and it had that grain and color hues that I liked.

Sorry my bad. But i mean i was serious about Diner it really is very awesome.

Head Trauma is a pretty creepy horror movie.

This Film is Not Yet Rated is a great documentary about the s**ty MPAA.

And finally, Murder Party. It makes the word ***** funny again.

I watched this recently, it was pretty hilarious. I love how camp the ending was. And his apartment was hysterical. That scene where they're in bed rolling around in all the money had me on the floor laughing :lmao:

I love that movie. I was never able to spot the one movement in it, the blink, however.

My personal gem would be the Red Shoes

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040725/

It's a beautiful film, and has a great plot. Interestingly it was part of Britain's attempt to jumpstart thier film industry after WWII.

Mad Love with Peter Lorre. VHS.
Kubrick's Fear and desire. VHS.

I really like Spoorloos, Donnadieu is great in that. But I thought Bridges was creepy too in the inferior remake (by the same director as the original), in his first villain role I believe (in was great in IM too. Bridges plays great good guys and great villains imo).

I have Dr. Strangelove, Wet Hot American Summer, and Willard. People might know of them but they are not well known.

Haha I saw Willard on Thanksgiving with my cousins!
Oh and a gem I have is the movie, Brick.
That movie kicks ass! Oh and btw WeaponXProject, we both live in CINCI! <3 Skyline!

Frankenhooker - death by lawnmower, supercrack and, of course a frankenhooker.
Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man) - Absolutely wonderful movie with zombies, nothing I say can do this movie justice. It's not a standard horror splatterfest but much much more.
Wild Zero - zombies, aliens, true love, rock and roll and GUITAR WOLF (plus another surprise). Seriously one of the most bizarre movies I've ever seen.

Funny, I am a Kurt Cobain fan by the way. And Brick is one of my favorite movies, too.

I from the westside.

Cohen and Tate- can't find this sucker on dvd, but I bought it on VHS when a local video store needed to make room. havn't really gotten around to watching it, but it was made by Erc Red so it must be good. I'm sortof surprised it isn't on dvd since One star is dead, and the other is on a successful tv show and has a cult following.

Way of the Gun:
Really great modern western. The 2 leads (Philipe and Del Toro) have fantastic camaraderie. Fantastic shoot out at the end

SLC Punk:
Underrated gem. Great lines by Matthew Lillard. Really great dialogue in general

Buffalo Soldiers:
Not released in US theaters because it showed soldiers overseas behaving badly (at least from what I hear). Real good movie. Joaquin Pheonix as a con man in the army.

Primer:
Cool movie about time travel that I still havent totally figured out, but still interesting.

Bubba Ho-Tep:
The end-all, be-all cult film, Elvis Presley is alive in a retirement home fighting off a soul sucking mummy. Elvis is played by Bruce Campbell.

Dallas 362:
Written, directed, and starring Sean Caan. Very cool flick. Story about a couple of young badasses facing maturity.

Monumet Ave.:
Denis Leary in an Irish criminal in Boston movie. Funny and cool. Good talent in it albeit sparcely seen (Famke Jansen, Martin Sheen, Billy Crudup, Colm Meany)

Now You Know:
Kevin Smith-esque romantic comedy by Jeff Anderson (Randall from Clerks).

London:
Chris Evans and Jason Statham lament on sex, love, and life, while snorting coke while Chris tries to get his ex-girlfriend back at her going away party\

Night Watch/Day Watch:
The first 2 parts to a Russian vampire horror trilogy. Really good, broke records in Russia I believe, directed by the director of Wanted (cant spell it)

Diner:
Classic romantic buddy comedy with tons of familiar faces (except for Mickey Rourke who looks completely different)
