Live-Action 'Dumbo' in the Works From 'Transformers' Writer (Exclusive)

Disney is developing a live-action take on its 1941 animated classic Dumbo and has Transformers franchise writer Ehren Kruger penning the script.
Justin Springer, who worked on Tron: Legacy as well as Oblivion, is producing, as will Kruger.
At 64 minutes, Dumbo is one of Disney’s shortest features but remains one of its most emotionally satisfying ones as it tells the story of a baby circus elephant who is made fun for his large ears. When his mother steps in to protect him and is locked up for it, he ends up on the road with a mouse as his companion. The mouse instills into Dumbo the idea that with the help of a magic feather, he can fly.
The movie produced several classic songs, notably "When I See an Elephant Fly"; "Baby Mine," which was nominated for a best song Oscar; and "Pink Elephants on Parade."
The new take involves the adaptation of the original movie while adding a unique family story that parallels Dumbo's story. Also, the studio believes that because of the current state of CG technology, live-action movies featuring a soaring pachyderm (or any animal for that matter) are viable.
This is the latest classic animated title that Disney is turning into a live-action movie, and it’s a strategy that has paid off: Maleficent, the most recent example, is a re-imagining of the 1959 movie Sleeping Beauty and has grossed more than $630 million worldwide since its May 30 release. The granddaddy of them all is the Johnny Depp version of Alice in Wonderland, which has earned more than $1 billion.
Among the projects in the pipeline, Disney has a live-action take on Cinderella opening March 13, is in preproduction on The Jungle Book that Jon Favreau is directing and just put Bill Condon on a live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast.
The Transformers movies have occupied Kruger’s life for the past several years. He has sole writing credit on the current Age of Extinction and co-wrote 2011’s Dark of the Moon and 2009’s Revenge of the Fallen with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. He also is known for his twisty thrillers such as Arlington Road, Skeleton Key and The Ring.

It's the guy who wrote Transformers. How good could it be?

Will they change the birds from crows to keep black people from having a huge racist fit?

Because black people were the only ones that found them racist.

Make them into lisping peacocks, problem solved.

I cannot imagine there was a demand for this. Heck, Dumbo's not even a Disney Princess...yet.

Lol, it's funny because they're still acceptable targets. :o

If you get Hugh Jackman and Matt Damon to voice them, in the gay community we would be like, "OMG, that's adorably ironic. I'm totally spending my disproportionate amount of disposable income on DVDs and related merchandise from this movie."

If you were to ask me to guess which of Disney's animated films they'd remake in live action, Dumbo would probably be one of my last guesses.

A recreation on pink elephants in cg would be a mind ****.

Like they will ever let Dumbo get drunk in the new film :/

Will there be the tent raising in the night raining sequence with black men doing that it in this film too?

It'll probably be different from the original, much like "Maleficent" was way different from "Sleeping Beauty". I'm guessing they're going to add a lot more human characters to the film.

Tim Burton to Direct Live-Action 'Dumbo' for Disney

Tim Burton will direct Disney's live-action Dumbo.

In the latest move by the studio as it continues to make live-action versions of its animated classics, Disney has tapped the Big Eyes helmer to take on the tale of a baby circus elephant who is made fun for his large ears, based on the 1941 iconic film.

As THR exclusively reported, Transformers franchise writer Ehren Kruger penned the script. The film will be a mix of CG and live-action to bring the classic elephant story to life, and will add a unique family story that parallels Dumbo's journey. Justin Springer, who worked on Tron: Legacy as well as Oblivion, is producing with Kruger.

Disney's latest live-action makeover Cinderella, starring Lily James, opens this weekend. The studio has had strong success with its live-action versions, including Burton's reimagined Alice in Wonderland, which grossed a staggering $1.02 billion. And after Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic villainess, opened in May 2014, it went on to earn a stunning $758.4 million worldwide.

Burton, who is currently working on Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, is repped by WME.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news of Burton's attachment.

So, which Disney animated film is going to be turned into live action next?

How the Hell is this going to work? In live-action that is.

I wonder this too. How they make Dumbo? They can't make him look cartoony because it would stand out in live-action. And normal elephants are not very expressive.

They're SO going to omit Dumbo getting drunk and the Pink Elephants hallucination.

Surprised no one is talking about Ehren Kruger writing this. :o

I don't think that people WANT to talk about that. Burton's involvement doesn't exactly make me jump for joy either. I don't hate Alice in Wonderland as much as many seem to, but it definitely seems like Burton is MUCH better when he's working with his own stuff rather than trying to adapt pre-existing material.
