These tipes of adaptations have been made before, one of the best examples of this that actually left a bad taste on our mouths was Dragon Ball: Evolution, however there were those who had the spirit of the properties from wich they were based on, the examples are Death Note and Ricky-ho.
There was already some talk of a Death Note american version and here we will disscuss the properties you think could work on the movie screen (you can shoose if the film should be american, japanese or from another country).
I'll start by adding that Dragon Ball had more potential, i know there's a lot of storylines but you could start clean with a first movie being a simple quest for the Dragon Ball, a la the early years, in fact, the original dragon ball (the one before DB Z) was very rich in story and had an interesting world and mythology both based on the american and japanese cultures, one thing is clear, son goku should be japanese.
The next is Death Note, it seems very american exept the idea seems like a japanese horror film and the characters have japanese names, it could work if they changed some names, they could make the first film based on Light and L chalenging each other until L's death and a potential sequel could follow the rest of the series, also, some will hate me for that but Zack efron should be Light Yagami, he looks exactly the same.
Finally lets say Naruto, i don't like it very much since the begining of Shippuden but even if this will hurt me to say but it kinda looks like a japanese version of harry potter:
kid with powers. parents are both dead, chosen in a prophecy, snake dude, talking animals, yeah it seems like harry potter.
And it could work in live action, with the special effects used these days they could make all those awesome fights, the main problem would be to cast kids that could only act with that age but to also be able to do some of the choreographies and fight scnnes, they can also use special effects and doubles for that but this way it would be easier.
The first film could even look like a stand alone and a franshise starter at the same time if they adapted the first story arc with zabuza, then in a sequel they could use the chunin exams and konoha invasion arc.
Naruto actors could be either, he has been able to look asiatic:

And American:

So if hollywood decided to make their version then they could search for a normal blonde actor.
I prefer One Piece to Naruto but Naruto would work better because One Piece just has too many storylines and could be less effective, but others can have a different oppinion, i may not know how to make it work but other person may know.
Now, before many start to complain saying things like:
Films based on anime or manga allways suck or
Hollyood making films based on anime/manga = Bad

Rember that this is only to see if some of these japanese properties could work and like films based on comic book it all depends on who makes them.

Rurouni Kenshin could also make an exelent movie but that one should have a complete Japanese cast, the series was very dramatic and so it could be a masterpiece.

I'm still waiting for that Evangelion movie. There's a lot that can go wrong with it, but a lot that can go right too. No matter what they do with it a portion of the fans are gonna hate it, so hopefully they just focus on making the best movie they can instead of trying to please every single fanboy (Gainax certainly wasn't able to with the original-- I still think the ending sucks, lol).

You guys remember the Guyver live action movies?

I thought they were pretty good adaptions. Im probably alone on this but I thought the sequel, "Guyver:The Dark Hero" was way better than the original, especially when you consider the limited budget. Even if you dont agree with that you have to agree that the fight scenes were definitely better in every way.

I think they could adapt the manga again and it could work. Just keep the budget low which is definitely doable when the budget for Guyver 2 was less than a million.

Guyver: Dark Hero was very good IMO, given the budget, I think they did all that they could and managed to deliver something better than the first film. Now Fist of the North Star on the other hand...........whew boy, where do I start?

Ugh. I remember watching that when I was younger. Even as a kid who liked pretty much everything, I thought it was crappy.

The studio behind the live action version of King of Fighters ...

also picked up the film rights to Gungrave in 2009. :csad:

I`d love to see Ronin Warriors made into a live action film!

i like the second guyver alot. would like to see cowboy bebop as a live action. when i would watch firefly i would sometimes think this is almost cowboy bebop. bounty hunters on a ship looking for work.

I'm pretty sure there's a live action Cowboy Bebop in the works. Unless it's been cancelled or in development hell.

It's probably in development hell but it's almost cancelled as nobody seems to have had any more interest for the project.

Closest well ever get to a Cowboy Bebop live action is Firefly/Serenity.

I think Zoids: New Century Zero would be great. Giant robots, great action, humor, a cast that doesnt have to be all Asian (so there would be no controversy)

Gundam Wing could be great too. Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X could be sick, but it should be made by a Japanese studio though or a lower budget studio

one of the problems with live action anime/manga is that in order to make a quality one you need the kind of money, equipment, and effects that only Hollywood studios can provide. on top of that, there aren't that many good directors who are willing to adapt anime/manga into a live action feature either.

the BIGGEST problem, however, with making a live action anime/manga movie is that the the average American isn't open enough to the style of a faithful anime/manga film. Speed Racer is a great example of this. now there are outside contributing factors that result (Iron Man being released the previous week, SR being released on Mother's Day weekend, etc) but it also didn't even do well amongst critics. on the other hand, most anime fans i know either liked or loved the movie. i, myself, found a very well made movie. i loved the style and would to see more anime based movies done in the similar fashion....but this goes to show that America (and maybe even the world) isn't ready for anime-based live action movies.

I love anime and hated Speed Racer. I dont think the fact that it stayed faithful to it's anime style (which I dont think it did) was the problem. Besides there is anime out there whose style could easily be transferred to live action and for an international audience

I just think alot of the time they just choose the wrong anime.

there ARE a few anime titles that could be translated faithfully to live action that would appeal to international audience, but there are very few that would appeal to American audiences. i was talking GENERALLY, anime isn't a genre that most countries, specifically America, can dig when properly translated to live action because of a good majority of them are rooted in Asian culture or ideals.

but then again, i also said that this is just the MAIN problem...there are other problems, such as good directors actually having the guts or motivation to translate anime with international potential to live action properly.

Although the dialogue is horrible in english, I thought Ninja Scroll was a pretty amazing movie.
If they did remake it, it would have Americans and be toned down to the point that it becomes "fantasy" rather than "dark fantasy". Takashi Miike would probably do a good job.

I loved Speed Racer but you need to pick an anime that is still popular enough, Dragon Ball could have translated well as it was very known but evolution made sure nobody will ever be interested again.
Naruto is popular but i doubt it will ever happen but Cowboy Beebop the film could be great, but it has so much story they would have to divide the story in more than one film.

As Moplaya mentioned...Ronin Warriors would be great

As would Zoids

Id also like to see Fullmetal Alchemist

Bleach would be pretty badass but I know they would **** it up

Also a Live action Tekkaman Blade or Karas would be EPIC!

Also Pokemon.......yes Pokemon and they could very easily americanize it

Damn, I didnt even think of FMA, louiebling$.

Out of all the anime brought up, I think FMA would be the easiest and most profitable to translate onto live action.

The guy who´s doing the mortal kombat mini-series would be great to direct dragonball.

I need an Evangelion movie in my life. If Pacific Rim is successful, maybe we'll be one step closer to an Evangelion movie.

Another one I want to see is B't X.

I'd love a Rurouni Kenshin movie as well.

i'd like to see devil man. i saw the japanese version. not the greatest visuals, but i think the story has potential. it's interesting how in the beginning when humans find out about demons they start to fight against them and come up with these laws, but as the story progresses, you see how far the humans go and eventually start killing themselves as well just on suspision on being demon, even if someone is not. basically the humans statr behaving like demons more and more.
with proper budget and a good director, devilman could be a cool movie.
