the lizard was never intended for spiderman 2. it was always meant to be about doc ock, and originally suposed to feature the black cat. docter conners is there for the same reason he (and eddie brock) is mentioned in sm1. cameos to please the fans.

No Lizard was indeed intended for SM2, this has been mentioned on the DVD as well by Michael Chabon.

As far as the final battle is concerned, I agree with Jick. I see no connection with the Lizard.

I'd love to know as well but I think it was either going to be a small role (like Venom) or the character simply didn't make it far into the script development phase.

Well I'm not sure about Lizard, but i know that they heavily worked on Black Cat.
Wonder why they dropped it.

The Lizard was indeed planned for Spider-Man 2 at a very early point in pre-production, but before the script was drafted, Lizard had been removed and Otto Octavius was given some of the characteristics that Curt Connors was supposed to have (acting as a mentor to Peter, being married, etc).

The story never got far enough to really know how the Lizard would have been put into the script or how his battles would have worked.

So he didn't appear in any of the early drafts? I figured he would've probably been in the first draft. In the commentary Arad said the first draft had "more villains" and in an interview Raimi said "at times there were two villains and at times there were more than two villains." Black Cat is often cited at the "second villain" of Spider-man 2, so I imagine she just remained longer than the Lizard did.

I think because the Lizard wasn't used in Spider-man 3, I now would really love to see what they had planned, if anything, for the Lizard in Spider-man 2.

wow I've learned allot from this thread.

I always took Arad's comments about the subject to mean that Lizard had been a secondary villain in the early scriptments and rough outlines, but by the time any real script drafts were written, Lizard had already been eliminated.

Somewhere there must be some rough SM2 pre-production sketches of the Lizard however, and I would love to see them.

I know in the commentary he mentions wanting to leave these little ideas within like when he runs into Dr. Connors whose a great villain" and I interpreted that to mean Dr. Connors was put in the movie to get people to speculate he could become a villain later on.

Here's a recap of the script development phase. Al Gough & Miles Millar of Smallville were hired before the first film had even opened. Kirstin Dunst also let slip that Dr. Octopus and possibly the Lizard would be the villains shortly before the first opened. In June Dunst revealed that Black Cat would be brought in as a rival love interest, and in the same month David Koepp was hired to write the first draft which Gough and Millar would then make revisions to. In September of 2002 Pulitzer winner Michael Chabon was hired to write a draft pretty much from scratch, and then Alvin Sargent wrote the final drafts using the best story elements from the previous writers. The final credit ended up being Screen Story by Gough, Millar, and Chabon and Screenplay by Alvin Sargent.

Not much is known about who contributed what or how all the versions of the story differed, but Chabon's draft was placed online seven months ago, and Gough and Millar claim they came up with the Peter/MJ/John Jameson triangle and Doc Ock's character arc (including the inhibitor chip and his wife Rosie). Koepp says not much of his draft was used. A story on SHH a few years ago said that he was asked about it at a convention and said that his version would've focused more on the continuation of the Green Goblin legacy and would have introduced Gwen Stacy. This is supported by Michael Chabon's comments above as well as Grant Curtis' comments about the Stacys' in the Spider-man 3 commentary.

Anyway it's a very long-winded way of saying that it's certainly possible that the Lizard could have appeared somewhere in one of the early screenplay drafts. I think it likely would've been Koepp's.

Thank GOD they never used Black Cat.

Cat, should never be used in a villianary role. I think she works better in a supporting character to SPider-Man. Key word there is SPIDER-MAN, cause Peter Parker in the films have plent of supporting characters around him, thats an important key to Black Cat, atleast early Cat, was she dug Spidey more then Parker.

Good thing they scratched Lizard, he deserves his own solo feature to shine as a villain.

Hey Two-Face was used very well despite not having much screen time.

TDK was basically a Two-Face movie, if you want to break it down in some ways.

Thats the thing about Batman, he usually gets out shined by his villains, and thats just a testament to the strength of his rogues gallary.

no, there was alot of harvey dent, (which is fine) but not alot of 2face. I kinda treat them like seperate characters. (even tho in the movie their not different personalities. which is odd to me)

anyway. LIZARD 4 SPIDEY 4!! yaaaa!!:woot:

well, I guess I can't argue w/ that.

(I just realised I acciDENTly started a batman discusion in a spidey thread. I feel like a hypocrite. :csad:)

That, and most Batman stories are driven by the villains. Batman is driven to stop crime so often he is reactive to whatever the villains are doing. Spider-man, by contrast, has always been about a guy with everyday problems made worse by having to stop the villain.

This seems a little out there. Lizard was never planned to be in it. 'Nuff said.

Wasn't somebody already casted or close to being casted as Black Cat before the character was axed...or am I thinking rumour mill?

^^ Not sure, I do recall something about Black Cat, but I'm not positive if it was official or rumor.
