Vulture has learned that Joe Hill's comic Locke & Key will no longer be coming to theaters, but instead will be adapted for television by Steven Spielberg, Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Josh Friedman.

Distributed by IDW Publishing, Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them... and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all.

Friedman ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") will write and produce. Kurtzman and Orci recently signed a deal with 20th Century Fox TV, so the studio will end up producing with Spielberg's DreamWorks TV.

I havent heard of this before but from what ive seen today it seems very creepy

Never read it, but if Hill has inherited even half of his father's writing talent, I'm sure it's great.

News of creative development on Fox's upcoming "Locke & Key" is flooding in today with word from Deadline that Miranda Otto has joined the cast and that Mark Romanek is in talks to direct the pilot.

Based on the comic book series by Joe Hill and distributed by IDW Publishing, "Locke & Key" tells of Keyhouse, a New England mansion with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. The building is also home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all.

Otto is set to star in the Steven Spielberg-produced series as Nina Locke, a mother of three who moves into Keyhouse after a terrible tragedy. Otto previously appeared on television in the miniseries "The Starter Wife," though is probably best known for her role as Eowyn in "The Lord of the Rings" films.

Romanek, meanwhile, made his feature directing debut with One Hour Photo and most recently directed Never Let Me Go.

I must say that this show has a interesting plot, I got a Lovecraft vibe from it. That would be sweet if Romanek is going to direct the pilot.

The Kurtzman and Ocri duo should be promising...

I love the series! It's incredibly well written and extremely well thought out. I highly highly recommend picking up the first trade.

Sarah Bolger has joined the cast of the upcoming Fox series "Locke & Key," reports Deadline.

Bolger, best known for her role on "The Tudors" and the films In America and The Spiderwick Chronicles, will play Kinsey Locke, one of three children to Miranda Otto's Nina Locke, the matriach for Keyhouse. Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo and Never Let Me Go) will be directing the pilot.

Two significant updates regarding Fox's Locke and Key, based on the comic book series by Joe Hill ("Horns," "Heart-Shaped Box").

Deadline reports Nick Stahl is joining the cast which also includes Miranda Otto and Sarah Bolger. The actor will play the character "Duncan." Mark Romanek is directing the pilot.

The site adds that the series is now aiming to debut this fall rather than during the summer.

Ah, so it's official that Mark Romanek is directing the pilot, nice if the show is premiering this fall.

so i am reading and this sounds awesome. but it looks like noone wants to buy the show ? so no season?

This is the Latest Update I've Heard about this show. From what I heard the Pilot will be shown at Comic Con and who knows maybe the fans will love it and that will convince a network to pick it up?

The sets have already been disabled and the actors released from their contracts. The pilot being shown at CC is just a treat to the fans who tried hard to save it.

I'm kinda glad now it didnt get picked up. Did not look as good as Id hoped :(

Does the comic have enough material to cover multiple twentytwo ep seasons?

Judging by the trailer it seems like its the type of thing that'd work best as a miniseries. Something like three two hour episodes.

Maybe if they sold it to FOX that way it couldve been picked up. Then again, its been a long time since Ive seen a miniseries air on network TV.

I think the last miniseries I saw was Merlin on NBC.

Joe Hill Adapts "Locke and Key" For TV

By Garth Franklin Monday May 9th 2016 04:01PM
IDW Entertainment have announced that Joe Hill will write and executive produce a new TV series based on his acclaimed "Locke and Key" comics, this one likely to end up on a cable network.
The series, which ran from 2008-2013, follows three siblings who return to their family estate in Massachusetts after the gruesome death of their father.
Once there, they discover magical keys that grant special powers and open strange doors. Unfortunately, they're not the only ones interested in these mysterious artifacts, as a supernatural force is also after them.
FOX attempted a series adaptation in 2010 but the network opted not to pick it up. Mark Romanek ("Never Let Me Go") helmed the pilot while Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman ("Fringe," "Star Trek") produced and the likes of Miranda Otto, Jesse McCartney, Nick Stahl, Sarah Bolger and Mark Pellegrino starred.
Universal then tried to adapt it as a feature trilogy in 2012, but nothing much has progressed since then. None of the previously involved people appear to be involved with the latest attempt.

'Locke and Key' Pilot From Carlton Cuse Set at Hulu

Hulu is giving IDW comic book favorite Locke and Key a stab.

The streaming service has handed out a pilot order to the popular Joe Hill property with Carlton Cuse set to serve as showrunner, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Locke & Key
is a horror/ fantasy series that revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.

Hill is set to pen the script for the hourlong pilot. Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel, The Strain, Jack Ryan) will exec produce alongside Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) and Lindsey Springer. Cuse will serve as showrunner, while Derrickson will direct the IDW Comics drama.

As Cuse goes, I hope this is far more Lost/Bates Motel/Colony and stays as far from The Strain quality as is humanly possible.

The Strain is the one show of his where he's the only showrunner and it looks to be the same here. I'm kinda worried about that...

But it's also got both creative minds behind the book series in the mix (Del Toro presumably less so than Chuck Hogan, who actually writes episodes), so I doubt the decisions are made in a vacuum.

Depending on how much author input there is across both series, hopefully Joe Hill wouldn't be so quick to sign off on the more extreme departures from the source material.

Andy Muschietti To Directed Locke and Key

Great news for all fans of Joe Hill's Locke and Key:

Andy Muschietti, who has directed Stephen King's It and Mama, will take over helming duties for the previously announced Scott Derrickson. Derrickson had to exit the Hulu pilot because of a scheduling conflict with TNT's pilot adaptation of Snowpiercer.

Muschietti will also be credited as an exec producer on the Joe Hill comic book project and join his sister and established producer Barbara Muschietti.
