Lounge of Justice - Part 90

According to this study people are more likely to see DC movies at home than Marvel or Star Wars movies.

Going to the Movies vs. Streaming at Home | Flixed

What’s anyone’s thoughts on this?
Not surprising, Aquaman and Shazam were not as well received in US as elsewhere.

Moviegoers in US prefer MCU and Star Wars. I don't think the reception to Joker changes anything as it's viewed as more of an art house type cbm.

I am not expecting a great run for BoP in US market. Black Widow is certainly expected to do well. I would be very surprised if the opposite happens.

Edit: This is why WB is afraid to make a Green Lantern movie, they know that more people would watch it on streaming at home, which explains GL series on HBO Max.

It's not terribly shocking, just another example of how a lot of people felt kinda burned by some of the earlier films. Hopefully we're on a good path now after Wonder Woman, Shazam, Aquaman and now Joker.
If people are still feeling burned, then I don't think they are going to be feeling alright about DCEU movies anytime soon.

Agreed if people are still feeling burned it would be more in the case of what happened with Justice League then anything else. Also as I said before if you want to see how people feel to the DCEU post Snyder you have to look at Captain Marvel, BOP, SS2 and WW84. Because Aquaman like it or not still had Snyder involved with the movie. Mainly because Wan and Snyder were always checking in with each other about what to add and what not to add because he was working on Aquaman's script while they were filming JL.

Eh, I think it's less about being burned. It's not like DC hasn't had a string of hits recently. To me, it's more that there isn't a massive pop-culture conversation around their films, at least not in the way Marvel has.

The MCU is basically a must-see TV show on the big screen and missing a theatrical run is like missing an episode. We all know the feeling when we missed Sunday's episode of whatever and it's all anyone is talking about at work. There's a mild sort of cultural exclusion that comes along with it. You can't contribute to the conversation or even listen should you want to avoid spoilers. I'm not saying people are only watching out of compulsion. That doesn't get you to $1 bil. But I do think it's a combination of compulsion and genuine enjoyment which like...yeah...damn right. That's a great path for success.

With DC, it's more like they've created various spin-off series. Sure, they're influenced by this preexisting narrative, but you don't really need to have seen the original show to get what's happening in this new one. And what's happening in this spin-off series doesn't really have any impact on the others. At least not until the big reunion special.

Does that sound familiar btw? It's because that's what they're already doing on TV (CW, DC Universe). Various solo/smaller team adventures that are in their own corners with occasional crossovers. WB couldn't form the DCEU into one big show, so they're instead making a bunch of different shows.

TL;DR: It makes sense to me that people feel more likely to watch the new DC films at home, considering WB is modeling the formula for those films off of their at-home viewing offerings.

BvS was an event film. Built up with the hype of an actual prize fight. You rushed to get your tickets because you couldn't wait. Even MOS had lots of hype thanks to Nolan, the trailers, the marketing and Superman being away from the big screen for seven years. Some of these other films are just that. Films. They don't come with hype built in. I've been skipping some of these films too, waiting till they arrive on TV. In my case, I've been doing that with both Marvel and DC films. I still haven't seen some of them.

BvS was an event film that didn't break a billion dollars, what an achievement.

Well they marketed Shazam like an event film.

Thankfully we got a smart girl to market Joker and somehow it has become an event film, lol, the only non Disney film to break a billion this year right? (Aquaman counted as 2018, WB/DC had a billion dollar film with great legs/one blockbuster with great legs per year for the last 3 years counting Wonder Woman, yet it's still a divisive brand lol, though IDW if the general audiences care at all, I think they just think DC's more adult. But it's almost like you'll have to make a bloody billion dollar cross-over film or a Joker vs Bat film to be deemed great in the mainstream press)

How's is the JC director gonna film before JC is released though, lol. Is that common practice?

This was revealed already right? Not officially but I'm pretty sure there were plenty of scoops about Hawkman and other JSA members appearing in Black Adam.

How was Aquaman not well received in the US? It made 335m off a small opening meaning it had great WOM

Moviegoers actually prefer to stay home. 70% of them rather wait a couple months for Marvel/DC movies to reach streaming than pay for overpriced tickets

Also what's wrong with a GL series anyway? AT&T isn't pulling any punches. They're giving it a huge budget. Close to 200m according to rumors

Yes, the key info El Maybe released this time is the 2021 release. Which means it will probably come around in the Oct/Nov/Dec as TSS is released in Aug after Batman in June.

I still dont believe that movie’s happening. I’ll believe it once it starts filming.

I wish more of the DC stuff would come to TV. I’d be all for longer form storytelling that maintains that cinematic quality.
I firmly believe this is the future. Just might take a few more years to get there (to the quality we want anyway).

special fx are improving alot, the cgi quality in these shows are what movie cgi use to look like maybe 10-15 years ago.
eventually it will even out and we will get better movie level sfx on tv.

and by that point, all the movies will be completely cgi - even the actors. lol.
but we won't be able to tell.

They should continue Snyder’s justice league on HBO Max. Would be sick. Imagine a Batfleck series. Lawd have mercy.

GLC - from the studio that brought you Henry Cavill's mustache

I know you're a big fan of the early films but that's really disingenuous. Look, I'm not talking about quality, since we can debate that to hell and back. But the narrative that the problems and negative reputation didn't start until Justice League is just untrue. Justice League was a massive train wreck, but it's obvious something wasn't clicking for a chunk of the audience even before that.

Definitely. I think the fact that even Disney, the current king of the box office, is spending record money on these new streaming shows says they have seen which way the wind is blowing. It sucks because there are some movies I can't imagine not seeing theatrically, but I think within the next few decades that's where we're gonna be at.

Ya I thought JL is the climax of the epic meddling from Tsujihara's regime.

Just saw someone on Twitter talking about those JSA in Black Adam rumors again. Be cool if they eventually did a JSA period piece or something.
