Lounge of Justice - Part 90

"EAT PEACE MUTHA...!"

That really does look pretty awesome!

I know I'ma bit late but I finally watched that Cavill GQ interview and man....give this guy another Superman movie WB! You can tell he loves the character and gets Clark/Superman and WANTS to explore it. And I love Snyder and I love the MoS/BvS/ZSJL trilogy but Snyder never really got to flesh Clark out fully. Snyder was juggling a lot in those subsequent films so I suppose he needed to find a balance with the other characters, but Henry deserves a solid superman solo with a good script that fleshes Clark out.

I feel like post ZSJL, there's a lot of great potential story to tell about Superman's mindset, where he is now that he has died and come back to life and been reborn. He's not the same person he was in MoS. There's great storytelling potential there IMO. I know people wanna start fresh and think Cavil's too tethered to Snyder but I think with a brand new creative team Cavill could make the character sing. IMO.

I've never understood the "deserving" argument that comes up in fandom all the time (not even singling you out; it comes out literally every time a new DC production is announced). This isn't stopping any other particular DC project from getting made.

Anyway.

We need a clean break from all of that...and while I love HC's passion for the character it never connected and WB really needs to distance themselves from the things that didn't work as much as possible. A cameo in Flashpoint would be fine (like Batfleck) but end it there. Snyder killed Superman in that universe literally and figuratively. Time to move on and start fresh just like Batman.

It sucks...cause I loved Cavill.

I hear what youre saying but…look what other creative teams have done with Snyder’s creations, Wan and Jenkins made Aquaman and Wonder Woman super stars. Jury’s out on Ezra’s Flash but that could potentially be a big hit if Muschietti knows what hes doing. Point is, I dont think its too late for Cavill if hes in a Superman movie with a strong creative team behind him. If the movie’s good, audiences will follow.

the deserving bit doesnt really pan out when we are getting our like 9th live action batman film in a couple months...

I think Cavill-man will be a hard sell at this point.Post Man of steel there was potential to salvage the character. BvS direction kinda soured me on it completely. Its just...done.

Im glad superman and lois is great(favourite adaptation of the character by far for me at this point). We are getting movie supergirl & potentially a movie. Black(?) superman which is hopefully not black clark Kent as thats dumb imo but still interesting. Val Zod.. An animated show.

Best superfamily has ever had it tbh..Hope it continues and Dc can do something worthwhile with non-bat stuff

I disagree. Cav-El and Snyder are inextricably linked because Snyder directed every time he was on screen. Plus it isn't like he is some amazing actor. He is easily replaceable.

He deserved better, but there is no reason to try and rehab a version of the character that is seen as deeply flawed and unlikable by at least half the audience. Maybe if ZSJL had actually bothered to use him and show how great he could be it would work but Snyder didn't do that because he has some weird fixation with Evil Supes. Snyder murdered Superman worse than Doomsday ever could.

Well, respectfully disagree on that last part but s’all good man ;)

And for the record if they wanna reboot entirely im all for it I just…it would be nice to see that untapped potential in Cavill come to fruition if possible since he clearly loves the character. I do Love Superman and Lois and I think thats the Superman we're all wanting to see more of. Hoechlin’s doing an amazing job with the character, i wouldnt even be opposed to putting HIM on the big screen.

If he gets a better creative team and material, I think Cavill definitely has a BETTER Superman in him, but a GREAT one? Nah, I really don't think so. There are innate qualities to a great Superman which he lacks, and is not a good enough actor to convincingly fake, imo. Which makes the prospect of a completely fresh start a much more exciting alternative to me. I'm not vehemently opposed to him getting another shot, because I do think a good Superman movie can be made with him, even if he's not a great Superman in it, but obviously, I'd rather get a great Superman if that's an option. And now Hoechlin has set the bar to clear for that in my eyes.

I may be in the minority on this one (re: Hoechlin). But I do really like the show.

so you guys think Hoechlin is the reason why the show is so good? if it had Cavill instead of Hoechlin the show wouldn't be as good?

I mean could be.But I honestly not think Tyler's inferior to Cavill in acting its not like hes a powerhouse actor.More often then not hes criticised for his acting

Hoechlin made a very good impression in his Supergirl debut. Now, I do think the writers pitched him some easy balls in terms of classic, Reeve-esque Supes/CK moments. No matter; Hoechlin knocked them out of the park. But in subsequent appearances, his Superman characterization was less appealing. Fast-forward to Superman & Lois, and there seems to be nice balance between the Reeve-esque/nostalgia elements and a more modern, “realistic” approach. At least so far.

Bottom line: to the extent that S&L has gained popular appeal, I’d say it’s more to do with the writing than performance. That said, Hoechlin does a decent job in the role.

Dude its a 4 hour film and I am in almost as much of it...and lets not forget that if there was a continuation (which if you remember I had no issue with and welcomed) Superman was going to go evil and be a herald of Darkseid. Then Snyder's true love Batman was likely to save him...again. (and should we discuss him knocking up Lois...nah)

Look there is untapped potential for a solid film with him but we are long past that. If he came out and made MOS2 there is no way to not link it to the films that came before. (WW and AQ didn't rely on BvS and JL to work they just referenced them to continue the narrative) MOS2 would be a sequel to all the Snyder films that came before it. Even if they just made a Superman film and had him in it it would be confusing because half the people would be expecting it to be a direct sequel. It would bomb epically cause the Snyder fans would hate it jettisoned the continuity and the rest would avoid it for fear it doesnt jettison the continuity.

We are just too far gone for that now. It sucks because I think there was a good film in there with the right director but at this point his version of Superman is just tainted.

No it wouldn't. Tyler is not Orson Welles or anything but he is perfect in both the Clark and Superman role. Plus he is more believably in love with Lois than Cavill ever was. (though that was as much on the writing)

Even in mediocre scripts Tyler still shines.

The Lobster

A rewatch.

Tis' is really beautiful depressing flick. Hell of a cast. I'm also convinced that if not for film...Yorgos Lanthimos would be a prolific serial killer. His next film is one of my most anticipated flicks right behind the batman.

Absolutely not. Tyler’s laid-back dorkiness is a huge part of his Clark’s appeal, and Cavill is far too rigid and takes himself far too seriously to ever let himself get that excited about chocolate bacon on camera. :hehe:

Girlfriend loves Asia but I am not sure she has ever been there.
By Asia are you thinking mostly Japan and Korea (definitely not North) or are you including other nations like India, Turkey, Jordan and GCC?

I know I'ma bit late but I finally watched that Cavill GQ interview and man....give this guy another Superman movie WB! You can tell he loves the character and gets Clark/Superman and WANTS to explore it.
I think he could've worked, but I don't know... Brandon Routh is simply more suitable for the role for the way he can deliver lines. Cavill is a good Sherlock Holmes tho who did show some promise in Man of Steel.

In what way does this take on Superman feel more realistic? I see the quote-unquote bit and still wonder.

*Flashback to him dipping his shoe wearing feet in Lois bathtub in BvS.*

He can be laid-back too, but it's strange that I had to think of that dim movie to think of a laid-back moment for Henry as Clark.

Visually, S&L has a more cinematic aesthetic. Indeed, several folks have observed that the show has a stark, Snyder-esque quality. :ebr: It’s certainly looks different than the rest of the CW/DC slate.

Tonally, S&L tends to have more naturalistic characterizations and dialogue. True, in the flashback scenes, there were nods to nostalgia (e.g., the Max Fleischer costume) and the Donner/Reeve approach. But in present day, things settle in to a modern/realistic sensibility.

It goes without saying, of course, that when the subject is a superpowered hero who can fool everyone with a glasses disguise, “realism” becomes a relative term. :cwink:

I mean the show does what fans of man of steel defend it for...it makes the character of superman more relatable, more human. It just does better. The show is grounded on the relationship of clark and lois, clark balancing being the world's fireman and being a father. Its got the twins learning to adjust to a new town new world(post powers and reveal). Its got the struggling small town and the Cushing/lang household to balance off.

It grounds superman without robbing him of his damn personality or inherent appeal.
