Does Luke have a bigger reason for hiding than overwhelming odds or a relative being evil? Neither of those things stopped him from fighting before, and he knows better than to feel guilty.
I have been staying away from all news and spoilers as I can. I am not a "big" Star Wars person. I enjoy the movies and such. But books and anything else like that I have had no desire to get into.
This has me curious though as people always claim Luke is "hiding".
Why is it people claim this? Can he not just be off doing his own thing?
Just because he is a "Jedi" does not mean he feels obligated to go fighting all "evil" out there. I just always pictured [BLACKOUT]"Ok, I am going to go hang out in this temple, learn the ways of the force and bring back the order"[/BLACKOUT] I never pictured, "oh I am afraid of this or that".

Just got back from seeing it
I think Rey is his daughter. He knew she was gonna be craaaazy powerful and blocked her memories of him and left her on Jakku so that she couldn't be turned against the Republic and the Jedi. I'm also thinking he had a wife or at the very least a lover that he lost to the Knights of Ren when they raised the academy. Considering where he was at the end of the film I'm assuming it's the birthplace of the Jedi Order so he might be trying to become more powerful. The way he looked at Rey, her attachment to the light saber and was Kanata told her I think Luke was looking in his daughter with love and fear that she might be turned. He might have conquered his fear of the dark side, but perhaps not of losing the ones he loves - a dangerous feeling for a Jedi to have.
Again I didn't say Luke is afraid of Kylo - not in the least bit. I think he's afraid if losing Rey to Snoke. I don't think he wants her trained which is whyIs Kylo Ren someone Luke should be afraid of if Rey could fight him? Maybe Luke needs to find the right rehabilitation strategy?

[BLACKOUT]I thought she is his daughter too. I was really expecting her to say "Father" during the final sceneJust got back from seeing it

Another thing is how Leia looked at Rey in the next to last scene.
It's funny, my group went crazy for most of the returning characters showing up, but they were deathly quite during Luke's reveal. Our crowd went insane when he turned up. He looked amazing. I cant wait for Episode VIII.

Exactly the same with my crowd. It's funny, my group went crazy for most of the returning characters showing up, but they were deathly quite during Luke's reveal.
I wish Luke had taken the saber at the end. It didn't feel conclusive enough for me, just leaving the two of them there staring at each other.
In my theatre they were dead silent. (The crowd lost their **** when they saw Han, Leia, the Falcon, "STAR WARS", etc though)Did people cheer..or CRY when Luke appeared?
