Does Luke have a bigger reason for hiding than overwhelming odds or a relative being evil? Neither of those things stopped him from fighting before, and he knows better than to feel guilty.

From what I've been reading, he's been living at the old Jedi temple. He may be trying to restart the Jedi Academy. That would be a good enough reason, I think.

I have been staying away from all news and spoilers as I can. I am not a "big" Star Wars person. I enjoy the movies and such. But books and anything else like that I have had no desire to get into.

This has me curious though as people always claim Luke is "hiding".

Why is it people claim this? Can he not just be off doing his own thing?
Just because he is a "Jedi" does not mean he feels obligated to go fighting all "evil" out there. I just always pictured [BLACKOUT]"Ok, I am going to go hang out in this temple, learn the ways of the force and bring back the order"[/BLACKOUT] I never pictured, "oh I am afraid of this or that".

Nah, me neither because:

i've yet to see it, but i do hope he starts an academy again. i'd like to see at least another lightside force user/lightsaber wielder if he's going the way of Yoda, and if finn turns out to be Leia of this trilogy, and if del toro ends up a baddie of the first order/darksider type.

[Blackout]Did you forget that Rey is in the film?[/blackout] :)

It would be cool if he were being productive. Everything I've heard though makes it sound like he goes into hiding because he feels guilty and responsible (so typical movie character depression).

Just got back from seeing it

I think Rey is his daughter. He knew she was gonna be craaaazy powerful and blocked her memories of him and left her on Jakku so that she couldn't be turned against the Republic and the Jedi. I'm also thinking he had a wife or at the very least a lover that he lost to the Knights of Ren when they raised the academy. Considering where he was at the end of the film I'm assuming it's the birthplace of the Jedi Order so he might be trying to become more powerful. The way he looked at Rey, her attachment to the light saber and was Kanata told her I think Luke was looking in his daughter with love and fear that she might be turned. He might have conquered his fear of the dark side, but perhaps not of losing the ones he loves - a dangerous feeling for a Jedi to have.

Is Kylo Ren someone Luke should be afraid of if Rey could fight him? Maybe Luke needs to find the right rehabilitation strategy?

Again I didn't say Luke is afraid of Kylo - not in the least bit. I think he's afraid if losing Rey to Snoke. I don't think he wants her trained which is why
he's filled with an overwhelmingly bitter sweet feeling at the end

Interesting. Really wish we could see Lucas's original notes. ROTJ completely deconstructs the action movie climax. War is not the answer in Star Wars; highlighted even more by Yoda's failure in Episode III to bring down Palpatine. War merely follows from the real problems. Would be great to see what conflicts were originally in store for VII-IX rather than more Stormtroopers.

I took his sad look to be grief over Han Solo's death. If Liea felt him die, you know sure as hell that Luke felt it. Seeing Rey standing there, silently begging for him to take the lightsaber felt like she was saying "look what your absence has done."

That being said, if she is his daughter, your thoughts make sense.

[BLACKOUT]I thought she is his daughter too. I was really expecting her to say "Father" during the final scene

Our crowd went insane when he turned up. He looked amazing. I can’t wait for Episode VIII.

It's funny, my group went crazy for most of the returning characters showing up, but they were deathly quite during Luke's reveal.

Another thing is how Leia looked at Rey in the next to last scene.

[BLACKOUT]Couple of ways to take that. One could be that both are the only two force sensatives around so they had that connection. The other of course is that Leia is her Aunt.[/BLACKOUT]

Hold, Luke learned the ways of the force in 6 years, and in 6 years his power with the light was able to challenge a "hindered" chosen one. After 6 years, Luke was probably as powerful as Obi Wan in episode 2.. I assume that 40 years later Luke has got to be close to Yoda in terms of power in the force. If Rey can fight a wounded Kylo and beat him, I would assume Kylo wouldn't be much more of an after thought, excluding any emotional attachment?

Exactly the same with my crowd.

A couple other things that make me think that Rey is Luke's daughter:

  • Kylo flips his **** when he hears about how there was a girl. Makes me think he had heard whispers about her.
  • How Leia holds her
  • The lightsaber calls to her
  • Maz says "That lightsaber belonged to Luke Skywalker and his father before him. I don't have to tell you what you've probably already come to suspect" (something along those lines)
  • How she keeps being surprised by her force abilities as though someone forced her to forget

Just some initial thoughts.

I'm happy the twist wasn't that Luke turned to the dark side. After all his development in Episode 6, after a line as famous as "I am a Jedi like my father before me" having Luke turn evil would've been a real slap in the face.

I'm not sure I'd want Rey to be related to him. It seems likely, and there's a ton of dialogue that makes it clear she's someone important. But having her be a Skywalker seems obvious, it'd be a really boring reveal. It seems the most likely, but I'd rather it be something else. I don't know what.

I wish Luke had taken the saber at the end. It didn't feel conclusive enough for me, just leaving the two of them there staring at each other.

I was really waiting for that thing to fly to him.
