Stringer Bell is returning to primetime, or at least Idris Elba is, starring in the new BBC/BBC America co-production "Luther."

BBC America announced on Tuesday (June 8) that the six-episode psychological thriller "Luther" will premiere later this year, featuring Elba as a "intellectually brilliant but emotionally impulsive murder detective."

Elba also serves as associate producer on the series, which premiered on the BBC in May to mixed-to-positive reviews.

Created by Neil Cross ("MI-5"), "Luther" focuses on Elba's John Luther, who finds himself engaged in a battle of wits with Alice (Ruth Wilson), a multiple-murdress, who also happens to be his confidante.

"I'm delighted that the BBC has brought Luther to life," Cross states. "It's an intense psychological thriller which examines not only human depravity but the complex nature of love … and how it's often this -- our finest attribute -- that leads us into darkness."

In addition to Elba and Wilson, most recently seen in AMC's "The Prisoner," the "Luther" cast includes Indira Varma ("Rome"), Steven Mackintosh, Paul McGann, Warren Brown and Saskia Reeves.

"BBC America viewers have always loved British crime thrillers. 'Luther, puts a whole new spin on the genre and sucks you in with its intelligent storytelling and gripping plotlines," states Chris Carr, COO, BBC Worldwide Channels. "We’re thrilled to have Idris Elba on BBC America and intend to surprise a few people by revealing that he’s British!"

Are viewers really likely to still be shocked that Elba is British? In addition to "The Wire," Elba's credits include an American-accented turn on "The Office," plus a wide variety of British TV credits including "Ultraviolet."

This show just finished up it's first season in the UK.
Pretty cool show, highly recommended if you like cop shows.

Kinda late, but I just caught all six eps of this over the last couple of days. It gets :up::up::up::up::woot:

Glad they are making more.

It is a fantastic role. Idris Elba was dynamite in this series. I was happy to finally see him in a role where he speaks with his natural accent.

Acting and performances were great. I think the British make some of the best TV ever. This show was just so bleak, dark, and gritty.

I'm glad they are doing more of this show. Luther is like a slightly better and more noble version of Vic Mackey. Luther does cross lines but he doesn't kill innocents. He doesn't deal drugs or help and support the dealers.

Season 2 off to a good start

When does this air in the US? I keep wanting to discuss the latest episode in here but fear spoiling it. We had Episode 2 on the 21st.

Man I fricking love this show.

They couldn't think of a different name? The first thing I thought when I saw this was either Martin Luther (of the German Reformation), Martin Luther King Jr or Lex Luthor.

So anyone catch the finale last night? Man not much shocks me these days but for some reason the murders in the past couple of episodes really made me squirm. It made up for the 2nd part of the spring heeled Jack case which was abit of a let down after how good the first part was. Just a shame we only got 4 episodes :(

O/T but whilst someone mentioned the shadowline, wow what a show the very first scene in the show alone is reason to watch it.

I am absolutely in love with this show. I hope there is more.

I also love the movie type quality they have incorporated into the show since the beginning of season 2.

This show needs to get more recognition, it really seems an underrated gem.

Also...

I hope we get more Alice in any potential future series'. :)

Yes we need more Alice..... and Paul McGann, i like his character.

By the way i like your Luther avatar Van Petrol

Yeah, I agree mate.

Cheers mate! Likewise with your Fight Club avvy! :)

Love this show. Best part of British TV at the moment. This season seemed to go by far too fast. :csad:

I agree with more Alice and Paul McGann. They weren't really utilized very well this time around.

I dont like the fact that there was only 4 episodes this series, should have been at least 2 more. Hopefully if there is a series 3 they will go back to 6 episodes at least...

I've heard a lot of great things about this show, so I gave it a chance and saw the entire season 1. I'm not usually into cop series, but this one was fantastic. Every time an episode ends, it leaves you begging for more. While Elba carries the series on his shoulder, I must give credit to Ruth Wilson. She is absolutely amazing in every scene she's in, a scene-stealer.

As much as I'm eager to start watching season 2, I'll hold it off as I have other TV-series to catch-up.

Btw, I just saw that Luther has been ordered for a third season.

Late, but just caught up on this show. Idris Elba's one of my favorite actors to watch and this show is brilliant. Seeing him as Stringer Bell in The Wire, then as John Luther...this guy's a great actor.

Also, rarely does a show ever have me truly cheering for the police to catch the bad guys as much as this does.

Just started watching the first season today. What a fantastic series. I got to the end of episode 5 and wow...

Breathe Me is kind of played out for me, but when they started playing it when Luther found his ex...man, brought a little tear to my eye.

Good stuff, can't wait to see six tomorrow.

Idris Elba wins golden globe for best actor in a mini-series.

Yeah, this show is great, glad to see him get some recognition
