If you seriously think that teens or kids won't see a movie in theaters because it's rated R, then I guess you don't see many R rated movies in theaters.

I don't think this is true. I feel that Miller IS making this for the fans of the original trilogy. However, he is also making it to attract new viewers. Hence the flash backs of Max's family. He is giving the general audience his back story without this being a remake or a re-origin movie.
This is a sequel, but also can stand on its own for those that have not seen the previous films. With the time gap from the last Max movie, I think this was a great way to bring Max back.
