Over the last few weeks, we've gotten emails from various sources regarding who David Goyer has in mind to star as Magneto in the X-Men spin-off movie.

Official casting news is way off but the rumor mill has Justin Chatwin's name popping up over and over again. You'll most likely remember him as the son of Tom Cruise's character in War of the Worlds.
Coincidentally, Justin was in the David Goyer directed, The Invisible as well. Did Goyer see something in this kid that we didn't see in War of the Worlds? Or is this just wishful thinking on the part of Justin's manager?

One trusted source dropped this on us at least two weeks ago but advised caution if posting. Calls to the Studio were answered with the expected 'no comment' of course. However, many other unproven sources have also chimed in with the same news. Although we're still a ways off from officially knowing who will play the young Eric Lansherr, it is expected that the Magneto spin-off will be an origin tale of the young mutant post-holocaust.

Treat this as rumor.

I know it is common for directors to hire friends they have worked with before but I would rather they audition and get the right person, rather than just look in their phone contact list.

I have seen Justin in WOTW and he was a good actor, I didnt like the character very much though. I dont know if this dude can match or even get close to Ian Mckellen in terms of portraying Magneto.

However, this is just a rumour....

I hope this ends up as only a rumor. :o They should try to find a young Ian McKellen - look for actors from overseas, imo.

I thought Magneto would be in his late twenties/early thirties in the movie...They truly need to find an actor who can be as serious, engaged and elegant as a young Magneto needs to be.

Maybe not as young as they're looking for, but Sean Bean would be my first choice.

How little original it would be, the same actor as his first movie.

He doesn't look anything like Ian McKellen....at all. A very decent actor, but...he just wouldn't look believable as a young Magneto if they're following the previous movies.

i don't think Justin is that bad of a choice, i mean, i know we haven’t seen that much of him, so, there's not a whole lot to judge his acting rang on, and it kinda looks like the director might just be playing favorites with the kid
but, maybe not
and on the looks issue, of course if you compare a guy in this later 60's to a 20 y.o. there not gotta look a like (let see if you look exactly the same in 50 years lol)

but, with that said, here's some one else to consider
(though, somewhat of a unknown)

Um dude that young pic of Ian Mckellen doesn't look all that different from today's Ian. You can tell its him cause he still looks the same despite the aging.

As for that chaitwin dude, No. He looks nothing like mckellen and his acting that i've seen haven't shown me he can do mags. I say go with someone similar looking.

yes, you can til its him, that wasn't what i was talking about, that pic wasn't part of my age argument, I meant, in terms of the movie, the young actor who portrays him, people aren't going to expect him to look exactly like him, and just going by looks alone, (unless you happen to find a really talented young actor, who does look like him) it isn’t first priority in casting him, look for talent first, then looks

btw: that young Ian pic is from around 65, which would make him like 26-ish there

he kinda looks like that andy samberg(?) guy from snl who does the skits

How about having Jeremy Irons play a middle aged Magneto?
