(Hope this hasnt been posted before!)

Surgeons in Russia thought they were going to remove a cancerous tumor from a 28-year-old patient – but instead they found a 5-centimeter tree growing inside his lung.
It happened in Russia’s Urals region while doctors were operating on Artyom Sidorkin, the Russian newspaper, Komsomolskaya Pravda Daily reported Monday.
Doctors suspected Sidorkin had cancer after he complained of extreme pain in his chest and had been coughing up blood.
"I blinked three times and thought I was seeing things," Surgeon Vladimir Kamashev told the newspaper.
Doctors believe Sidorkin somehow inhaled a seed, which later sprouted inside his lung.
The spruce, which was touching the man's capillaries and causing severe pain, was removed.

Well, heres another reason to quit smoking. Not only will you get cancer, you might also start a forest fire!

Wow... The things some people will try to smoke...

I wonder if he planted the tree later? I would.

brings new meaning to 'smokin dem trees', SON!

hehehehe! What I'm tripping on is how in the hell can a damn treee grow in somebody's lungs!?? Maybe this is a sign or an omen. Meh, thats scary, maybe this is how the trees fight back for all that paper we use.

you been smokin my cuzzos, KID . . . oh yeah, well Imma get up in yo lungs an' smoke YOU, SON!

seriously though, I don't think it's anything to be alarmed about . . . nothing freakier than some of the other **** you hear about . . .

but definitely odd . . . that seed had to be nourished just enough to be able to get lodged in there and grow

In Soviet Russia, tree lungs you!

...

...

...wait...

"Treelung"

It's like a really bad Warcraft username.

They had something like this on Nip/Tuck, only the guy was growing branches on his body. It was something like that.

^ That happened in real life too.

Dude must be a Russian lumberjack or something for a tree to take revenge like this...

This is exactly why you don't want too many seeds when you light one up.

I guess it would kind of make sense, we inhale oxygen and exhale the stuff that plants need to breath. So I can see some kind of survival for the plant if that were the case.

This might work though. Trees turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, humans turn oxygen into carbon dioxide. It's win-win.

Except for that one part that it kills you....

It's kinda reminding me of that episode from the Batman Animated series......

"Wow Bob, your breath smells like fresh pine!"

Parasitic organism. They're all around us....there's probably one in you right now......

If the unwitting host could have survived indefinitely, I wonder when the tree would have stopped growing? If this story is true, then clearly the absence of light was not an issue, at least in early development of the embryo into a juvenile stage. However, I have strong doubts that the tree could have continued its growth for very long, as eventually its energetic needs would require the employment of photosynthesis.

On the other hand (and I find this unlikely), maybe it was able to leech nutrients/glucose directly from the host's bloodstream.

I'm still unsure of the validity of the story overall.

What confuses me about this is...how could it grow without sufficient sunlight??

A seed contains a certain amount of nutrients for the plant to grow. When in the proper conditions, it will start growing. However, in an area devoid of direct sunlight (or any at all), it will grow as if it's still underground.

You can test this with pea plants if you like. :cwink:
