I'd guess its real, Zod does say in the trailer that he's traveled very far through space, so it could be a mass variety of alien skulls, Kryptonian and Human included

This could be very true. Just a horde of skulls he has collected on his ship while looking for Kal-El. It's such a horrid image and something you'd never expect to see in a Superman film. I love it, a picture is worth a thousand words in this case.

The skulls shot is like something straight from a comic book. So much of this trailer looked straight from a comic book. Unbelievable. Snyder is a boss at translating comics to film.
