A man will spend the rest of his life in prison after he was found guilty in what prosecutors said was a case of scaring a 79-year-old North Carolina grandmother to death.

Multiple media outlets reported a federal jury found 21-year-old Larry Whitfield not guilty of murder Friday in the death of Mary Parnell last year. But they did find him guilty of causing her death by kidnapping her, and that carries an automatic life sentence.

Prosecutors say Whitfield was looking for somewhere to hide after a failed bank robbery attempt in Gastonia in September 2008 when he broke into Parnell's home.

Authorities say Whitfield never touched the grandmother, but she suffered a heart attack when she saw him, and he didn't call for help.

Well, don't know how to respond. The failed bank robbery doesn't warrant life in prison, but if he succeeded he would have gotten a few years anyway.

He caused someone's death by his actions. He kidnapped her.

If he'd put her in the car and then had a car accident that caused her to die this would probably be cut and dry for you guys... Well. It's not that much different.

What the article didn't say was he was dressed as the Grim Reaper

How did he kidnap her? He didn't abduct her, or spirit her away. All he did was hide in her home and she got a heart attack

Kidnapping is:
The crime of unlawfully seizing and carrying away a person by force or fraud, or seizing and detaining a person against his or her will with an intent to carry that person away at a later time.

You can see the obvious implications.

Was there an intent to spirit grandma away, or was it simply breaking and entering to hide from the cops, then leave when they do

According to the judge there was an intent to carry that person away at a latter time. Most likely as a hostage.

Not the one that convicted him, the one that indicted him.

When I read the title, I thought it was going to be about some guy popping out and scaring his grandma just for kicks.

Me too. Like some Halloween gone bad story.

Looks like she...:word:...has a date with the Reaper.

Looks like Grandma...:word:...is with Grandpa.

:awesome:
