Jeffrey Lee is not interested in the soaring price of uranium, which could make him one of the world’s richest men.

“This is my country. Look, it’s beautiful and I fear somebody will disturb it,” he says, waving his arm across a view of rocky land surrounded by Kakadu National Park, where the French energy giant Areva wants to extract 14,000 tonnes of uranium worth more than $5 billion.

Mr Lee, the shy 36-year-old sole member of the Djok clan and the senior custodian of the Koongarra uranium deposit, has decided never to allow the ecologically sensitive land to be mined.

“There are sacred sites, there are burial sites and there are other special places out there which are my responsibility to look after”.

"I'm not interested in white people offering me this or that … it doesn't mean a thing.

"I'm not interested in money. I've got a job; I can buy tucker; I can go fishing and hunting. That's all that matters to me."

Mr Lee said he thought long and hard about speaking publicly for the first time about why he wants to see the land incorporated into the World Heritage-listed national park, where, he said, "it will be protected and safe forever".

Talk about security...it'll always be there if he ever needs alot of money.

AMEN!!!!!!!

Anyone want to bet that uranium rich land will be mined wheater he likes it or not?

Good for him... glad to see there's still about a half dozen people in the world that still have some integrity.

:word: :word: :word:

:yay:

Something will happen...you bet.

F**k nuclear weapons.

..and I think that the man made a great decision. :)

Never sell out from your personal beliefs for money.

I think he's nuts. $5 billion?!! Definitely nuts. I betcha the company'll make damn sure that land never gets included in that World Heritage-listed national park thing. Lobbyists away!!!!!!! Bet they also pay off any woman who ever comes near him so they don't have to worry about him having children who might share the same ideas. When he gets old and dies, it'll be theirs. The uranium will keep.

He's the last surviving member of his clan. No heirs. Don't be surprised if he has an "accident" and the land gets mined regardless of his wishes.

Now a white man bashing thread will begin:whatever:
*now waits for guilt ridden white people to make fun of themselves*:whatever:

Of course. You may as well give up all your coolness points if you become an angry white male.

II'm just messing with you. And he's not wrong. There won't be a group of wealthy blacks, mexicans or asians attempting to buy him off. Though I'm sure there's a handful of people out there going, "why the **** does that damn negro get $5 billion and I don't?"

How will the French ever generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity they need now?

This is a very powerful showing of integrity. I commend Mr. Lee for having the conviction, personal satisfaction with his life and love for his heritage to turn down an exorbitant sum of money. Truly impressive.

With that said, I would have signed that **** over so ****ing quickly, that Areva would have thought they prospected the wrong parcel of land. 5 BILLION DOLLARS?!?! I might have offered to start digging myself right there on the spot.

What a great show of integrity, as others have said. You don't need money in life, all you need is a cute kitten.

Oh he's going to get killed :(
Then the french could dig for free.
