It's poll time!

In one corner we have the death-defying former military man, Bear Grylls, host of the TV show Man VS Wild...

...and in the other corner we have the guru of seven day survival, Les Stroud, host of the TV show Survivorman.

Which survivor show do you prefer and why?

Which man, Bear or Les, do you think is the better one at their craft?

For my take on this...

I do like that Bear shows you how to get out of certain situations if you find yourself stuck in one (such as a bog for example). And he does seem to go into a bit more detail about the wild edibles than Les does, which I definitely like.

But some of the things Bear does would be foolish to do if you're stuck in the middle of BFE by yourself as it could cause serious injury to those without proper training. It's all well and good if you've got a safety crew there to save your ass if you **** up, but for some average joe stuck out in the wilderness, they should definitely not attempt most of the survival stunts he does.

Not to mention that the first rule when your stuck in the out in the wild is usually to sit tight, set up a camp, and wait for rescue. Whereas Bear immediately goes off to rescue himself. That can come in handy, depending on your situation, but it does send a wrong message for those who don't know any better as those who aren't in the physical shape Bear is in, or had the training he has would most likely be screwed.

As for Les, I think the scenarios in which he strands himself in are much more realistic (kayak washed out, dirt bike or snowmobile out of fuel, plane crash, etc).
He's definitely the more practical of the two. If I were stuck in a survival situation I'd go about getting a shelter, fire, and food together instead of immediately running off to try and escape. After all, sitting tight is usually the best course of action anyway. I've read many a story where a man lost in the wilds has simply walked himself right out of the search zone of the rescue teams.

The only thing I don't like about Les is that he doesn't show you proper cleaning techniques on the animals he kills, and doesn't go into better detail on the edible and non-edible plants in the area.
That and he tends to come off as a whiner some times.

In closing, if I were stuck out in the middle of nowhere I'd definitely try to do what Les does over Bear.

Nice breakdown, but I'll still take Bear.

Even if I couldn't do all his crazy stuff to get myself rescued, I do know I can survive off of pine needles next time I get lost in the forest.

How is this a competition now? Suvivorman is real. Man V.S. The Ramada Inn. Isn't. Bear is a phoney little b**ch, & his surviving tactics would get you killed.

Survivorman,Les does it real...and often he gets into bad situations because of it.That is how survival really is,Man Vs Wild is fake..i believe it.

I watch both shows for entertainment purposes and don't really care where the line between real and staged is drawn (within reason). Bear's more personable and I rather watch him.

I chose Bear, but I'm kinda split. Les is more of your "everyman" survivalist. He's on his own and shows you the more practical way of doing things. He usually preaches staying put.

Bear is a little more over the top and does things that most people shouldn't or couldn't do (climbing cliffs or waterfalls) but he seems to show alot more hints and tips about what to eat, how to make things, and how to go climb\descend\cross certain obstacles.

Both really tell you that you should stay put, but if you "have" to move...this is how you should do it.

I've tried to watch Survivorman. Les just doesn't appeal to me.

And while the reports of Bear staying in hotels while shooting damages the credibility of the concept of the show- surviving in the wild with a canteen, a flint to light fires, and a camera crew to document it, it doesn't damage the survival tips that Bear shows in the episodes.

He suggested drinking your piss. He climbs down a mountainside every chance he gets. He didn't build his the raft from the island episode. Bear's survival techniques are highly suspect.

There have been accounts of people that survived with the only source of "drinkable water" being their own urine

A couple of weeks ago there was a incident in China where miners were trapped. They survived by drinking their own piss & eating coal.

Edit:

Here's a link to the story.

I voted for Bear by the way.

You can survive on your piss for a limited amount of time, but there are toxins in it that eventually will kill you, something that Bear made no reference to.

By the way in this season of Survivorman Les actually showed how you can filter your piss to make it last longer. Something Mr. Ramada Inn didn't show.

Bear=Jock of Survival community
Les=Nerd of survival community

I would take the Nerd's word anyday.

I agree. Though I did lose alot of respect for him once those reports leaked to the press, it definitely doesn't diminish the fact that some of the things he shows you are still good to know.

the real one: les stroud

the entertaining one: bear grylls

idc how fake bear grylls is, when i saw him sink his teeth into a zebra and drink poop water from elephant crap he got my vote.

im mean come on. anyone with the name of bear grylls has to be the roughest person alive :word:

i'm gonna say Survivorman

because of him being left to drift in the ocean and a bunch of other crap he did

Les, because Survivorman's realness/reality is more preferable than Man vs. Wild (with the entire camera crew follwoing Bear's ass).
Man vs. Wild is more entertaining, though. Bear has enthusiasm.

Is he really a former SAS? I honestly don't trust anything about that dude anymore.

Actually he was indeed in the SAS for three years before a parachuting accident left him with injuries that ended his military career.

But Les is a tough hombre as well. He and his wife for their honeymoon by heading out into the wilderness for a year with nothing but a stone axe and spent the year there.

Did Man Vs. Wild get cancelled? I heard it was all fake, I'm just curious.:o
