Mark Wahlberg is set to star in Reykjavik-Rotterdam, a remake of an Icelandic thriller that has been set up at Working Title, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Aaron Guzikowski is writing the script, and Baltasar Kormakur, the Icelandic auteur who produced and starred in the original, is attached to direct the English-language version.

The plot centers on a security guard and former alcohol smuggler on the Iceland-Netherlands route who is tempted back into illicit business by a dubious friend after encountering financial problems.

The original, which Oskar Jonasson directed, is Iceland's submission for this year's foreign-language Oscar race

Anyone seen the original?

Funny how just earlier today I was looking at Kormákur's filmography at IMDb, because his first film 101 Reykjavik was mentioned at another board and I remembered I still haven't seen it.

Haven't seen any of his films for the matter, btw. I guess this Reykjavik-Rotterdam is a remake of Jar City.

Ah, I didn't notice the "produced and starred" part. I kept thinking directed. And Jar City is getting remade too.
Reykjavik-Rotterdam (2008) is the original film.

Source: Variety
December 1, 2010

Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi are in talks to join Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale in Universal Pictures' Contraband, reports Variety.

The Working Title film, a remake of Icelandic thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam, co-written, is being directed by Baltasar Kormakur, who also co-wrote, produced and starred in the original.

The plot centers on a security guard and former alcohol smuggler (Wahlberg) on the Iceland-Netherlands route who is tempted back into illicit business by a dubious friend after encountering financial problems.

Foster will play Wahlberg's brother-in-law while details on the character Ribisi would play were not disclosed.

Filming for the March 16, 2012 release is scheduled to start in January. Tim Bevan wrote the script.http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=72048#ixzz16wkX2t9i

Sounds good.
but I'd like it better if you took BAND out of the name.

:)

I'd gladly see this just for Kate Beckinsale.

I tend to be wary of January films, but I dig Ben Foster.

I would catch this film, but Mark's acting is sooo  in the trailer. And it's a shame considering the cast surrounding him in this project.

The first half of this trailer is incredibly generic. The second...a little more interesting.

I hated it. For me, it wasn't involving/engaging, whatever you want to call it. Major spoilers included:
I have little stomach for cinematic violence against women of a graphic nature, and Kate Beckinsale keeps getting the hell beat out of her in this movie. And kids getting threatened at gunpoint = :down. Add to that, the lameness of none of the villains dying. And they clearly deserve it.

I have been wanting to go see this film because i like Mark Wahlberg and Kate but i think i will just wait for it to come out on DVD. plus i really don't want to spend $ 14 bucks for this movie

I liked it. it wasn't spectacular or anything. It had decent enough good drama and I thought Mark and Kate did well with what they had to work with. Already seen it twice. lol.

Kate gets owned like three times. Poor woman. at least she handled herself a little when she smashed a piece of wood on the guy's head and swore. lol. She was good in it.

I think the trailer just tried to play it safe a bit much and didn't want to reveal too much about some of the more interesting pieces of the movie..

Sucked. Boring. Generic. Looked awful. Why are filmmakers so lazy? They don't care about the cinematography. If your script is ****, at least make the film look good. Or vice versa.
