It does look like trees and not some dirt or wind though.

People really thought those were trees? If those were trees they'd have to be perfectly flat, growing in straight lines and leaning uniformly within their little groups. In other words, the only way the perspective of that picture makes sense is if those "trees" are growing across the ground rather than growing up from the ground.
