Is it just me or is Marvel producing a lot of comics.

Marvel is producing a YUGE amount of comics.

And as I mentioned in the 8 months thread, Coates is turning Wakanda into a republic, which makes me incredibly irritated but at the same time vindicated after I dropped it after 3 issues.

I've said before that a Republic with a monarch as head of state (basically a Constitutional Monarchy) isn't all that difficult. They just have to bring back the Parliament that T'Challa unilaterally destroyed in a powerplay to fight Killmonger back in Christopher Priest's run and give it actual power.

makes you wonder if Wakanda in the films will be more of a constitutional monarchy than a straight monarchy, and the comics are just falling in line
Americans aren't huge fans of all-powerful kings, so perhaps they think that would be more palatable for film audiences...

All I know is that if this a preemptive reflection of their plans for the movie, my hype just took a hit.:nuhu:

well apparently they're starting the process of retconning Mar-vell out of Carol's origins
so I wouldn't be surprised if BP gets a 'refresh' before the film too

Captain Marvel #0 though the astronaut thing was new too. I'm ok with it myself.

I've seen something about the astronaut thing, but I haven't heard anything about Mar-Vell. Can anyone post any details? Use spoiler code if necessary. My budget sadly got stretched too thin for Mighty Captain Marvel, but I'm hoping its a successful book that I can read on Marvel Unlimited in six months.

Basically they flash back to her origin while Carol narrates, it talks about her becoming an an air force officer, then an astronaut, and then they just vaguely mention she made contact with an alien artifact ("The kree called it the psyche-magnitron") and she got the powers of an alien civilization, no mention of Mar-Vell anywhere. It's not a full, official retcon [yet], but it is sh**ty.

If official, she now has just another boring old "accidently powered by some sci-fi mumbo-jumbo" origin

So... they're basically trying to make Kit's drawing (it's from Captain Marvel 8 #1) canon? lol

Not sure how I would feel about it.
As for MCM #0, I went and read some reviews and it sounds like Carol is finally back to being... Carol. I really want to read it now, but unfortunately I too am having problems with my budget. :hehe:

Eh, it's not close to a retcon. It's obviously emphasizing certain parts over other parts, but I don't necessarily think that's unreasonable. She has absolutely no agency in her origin. If the goal is to just get people up to speed quickly, it makes sense to focus on the parts that are connected with her.

That being said, if I had a wishing machine (a Psyche-Magnetron, perhaps ;) ), one of the stories that I'd love to write would be a miniseries called "Captain Marvels" that would be a retelling of the origin stories of both Mar-Vell and Carol (sort of a cross between Frank Miller's The Man Without Fear and the Jeph Loeb Spider-Man Blue/Daredevil Yellow/Hulk Grey/Captain America White stories). One of the ideas I had was to incorporate the Psyche-Magnetron more prominently into their backstory and make it something Carol initially recovered during her secret agent days in the Air Force. Essentially she would recover it and then it would go to NASA for study until Yon-Rogg got his hands on it and used it to stop Mar-Vell. There are still some tricky damsel in distress moments to work out (I'll have to look at how KSD handled it), but that's one way to give Carol an active hand in her own origin story (as well as retroactively give some cohesion to those early Captain Marvel stories that were quite literally throwing things at a wall to see what stuck).

yeah I mean, her basically being a damsel in distress who gets powers accidently from the man who saved her was never gunna fly

but that's not to say they should replace it with just another 'random-accident-bestows-powers' story
We've had that so many times already: Spider-man, Daredevil, Flash, friggin' Ninja Turtles... etc

nor should they exclude Mar-vell, a valiant hero who eventually succumbed to cancer (quite unique in the superhero genre) and inspired Carol in the first place

It's not hard to make her a "non-damsel" and still leave the Mar-Vell connection intact. This sort of overreaction is way too common with Marvel these days, though. It really sucks that Mar-Vell is getting the shaft in the MCU, I just hope the whole Wakandan Republic thing doesn't carry over as well.
