What exactly is Marvel NOW, and how will it affect Spider-Man? If they kill of Peter, that may be the end for me in the reading department.
Also, I noticed in AMZ 689 that Madame Web said the web is crumbling. Could this be the death of the web-slinger? And possibly his replacement with Alpha?

Madame Web also said then in 690 that something would happen soon at Horizon Labs that will lead to a legacy of ruin for him. It probably is all pointing to Andy Maguire becoming Alpha, from there it's hard to say why that's the really bad thing. We've seen Alpha's origin is pretty similar to Spidey's, without any loss or tragedy so far, maybe he's reckless and Spidey dies because of him. Just a thought, anything could happen.

Thats a thought. I will keep reading probably if Alpha is fun. But I bet he will get phased out just like every gimmick. So no matter. Spider-Man will always rise back to front and center, and eventually, they will start getting him right again.

Spider-Man already died in the Ultimate Universe. If they kill him off in the 616, then I am going to be very upset at Marvel.

Then again, Captain America was assassinated and returned years later. So we'll see.

The cream always rises to the top. They can kill spidey off, give him as many sidekicks, or replace him with whomever they want. He will never be gone long.

Aloha,
SOUND ADVICE!

Aloha,
To answer your question.
The Marvel Comics Universe is about to get a major overhaul. Every summer, Marvel launches a story that ties all of its flagship books together – and in 2012, the Marvel superheroes are embroiled in the Avengers vs. X-Men conflict, which sees the two iconic superteams battling it out. It’s been a geek-pleaser storyline, but the aftermath is looking far more interesting: EW has dropped the exclusive that Marvel will be shuffling their characters and their creative teams, as part of an initiative that has officially been dubbed “Marvel NOW!”

Marvel NOW! will introduce new titles and re-fashion old ones; among some of the more intriguing books in the lineup will be Uncanny Avengers, which will be the first official blending of the X-Men and Avengers into one team. Scroll down to learn more about this bold new rollout – and what it may have to do with Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In an interview with EW, Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso made sure to differentiate Marvel NOW! from competitor DC Comics’ total reboot of their universe with the “New 52″ initiative. For one thing, there will not be a sudden halt to the old universe followed by a hard push into the new one – the new relaunches will be unveiled a month at a time. Said Alonso:

“This ain’t a reboot. It’s a new beginning…I feel that it’s a much more humane approach for retailers and fans to tell them: ‘Look. In the months of October through February, every week you can go into a comic book store and find a few new jumping-on points for the Marvel Universe, a place you’re going to like visiting. Or revisiting.”

A few of the Easter eggs in the image:

Thor has swords
Cable has an eye-patch
Hulk has space armor (and a robo-orb)
Nick Fury is Ultimate Universe Nick Fury [Correction: Apparently that's Fury's illegitimate son(???)]
Cyclops has a new uniform and eye-beam
Fantastic Four member Sue Richards is out on her own (for once)
Iron Man has new armor
Marvel Girl (Jean Grey) is back to land of the living
Rocket Raccoon and Nova – characters rumored for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie Marvel is developing – are (literally) being brought front and center

From the picture of Spidey at the top he may have a slight costume change.I'm sure the change is going to be much more drastic than that.

It's not the Ross suit. The Ross suit had external web shooters and no boots. This Spider-Man has the regular gloves and if you look reaaaaaallllly close at his left leg, you can see he has the classic boots on. Quesada just sucks.

I second that. Is there any chance of this guy being replaced as editor-in-chief?

So what is his position at Marvel now? :(

I feel like this guy is destroying my favorite comic book characters.

Chief Creative Officer which basically makes him the EiC for all of Marvel products - comics, TV, movies, games and toys.

I just read something about the Fan Expo 2012: apparently, Spidey does have a new costume in Quesada's image. This is an effect of the 700 and NOW.

That is a cover variant from 700 I think. Does it have something to do with Venom, then?

Nah, these are variants for 700. Venom is just there to make the black in Spidey's eye. The rumors that Pete is dying (because of a Ock/Peter body swap) to be replaced by Alpha could be true. He may use a new costume.

But Alpha doesn't even have the same powers as Spidey... and if that is true, then what will happen to the Body Peter, Ock Mind?

Pretty crazy. Wacker said that the last week in December #700 comes out.

It will be the only Marvel comic on sale that week, along with Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 which will apparently deal with fallout and should be read after. :wow:

Use of the word "fallout" makes me think he is going to die.

If you take a close look at his powerset, they can be utilized in a way to emulate Spider-Man's skills.

The rumor.....or should I say theory that I read was that Ock uses the discovery of Spidey's identity to swap bodies with Peter as it's dying. Peter technically dies and either falls into limbo or in a ironic twist of fate - Mephisto's hell (which could eventually pay off nicely for the anti-OMD crowd).

Ock in Peter's body would probably fall off the grid in order to set up a long awaited story that inevitably returns Peter back to normal. It could set up some interesting stories down the line where Ock does diabolical stuff while in his new skin that come to light and could cause the Avengers to sever ties to Spider-Man (putting the character back in 70's vigilante mode).

Still a Nerd, a poster from here (who's been absent for a while) also theorized like I did that ASM 700 would lead to Peter being forced to take Ock's like with forethought. He figures that the Octobots would be used to mind control MJ, May or JJJ Sr to put them in grave danger as a suicide type deal.

Honestly, the more and more I think about it and read interviews I'm starting to buy into the possibility of Peter dying. It leads to so much potential future stories and would be a great fit for what NOW is trying to do, by putting Alpha in the Spidey colors for a temp basis. This could be Spider-Man version of The Death and Return of Superman in a way, even though they tried this once with the Clone Saga.

It all depends on how the pieces fall into place if it will be good or not. It's certainly tricky, Dan Slott is one of the few guys that could pull something like this off. That's probably why he feels the need to "go underground" after 700. He can't come right out and say it's just a temp thing and an ongoing saga because people will be screaming for his head online and he might leak something to protect himself out of frustration.

By the way, I can't remember who came up with this Peter/Ock body swap. It was some guy on the CBR forums, so credit goes to him. He admitted that it was kinda far fetched but like I said earlier, I'm starting to think he's onto something as opposed to being ON something.

That should be the ACTUAL cover for the book. It's freakin' awesome. You know you've been reading Spider-Man for a long time when you can pick out the artists and issues that some of those different Spider-Man shots are from. :oldrazz:

Aloha,
In the 50 years of Spidey he has already-quit(Spider-Man No More),disappeared(Secret War) and died(The Other). I'm ready for whatever comes Dan Slott-bring it on.

Peter quit during the clone saga as well, and he disappeared for a month in all the Spidey titles one time in the 80s, the end of volume 1 Peter burned the costume and "gave up" before volume 2 started, and before BND started it was said Spidey was gone for 3 months. Those are just several I recall. :wow: Likewise, though. I'm real excited for whatever Slott's got in store for us!
