Marvel Now - Part 3

*coughs*
I'd like to announce that so far, I am enjoying Fear Itself.

It had some parts that I wasn't a fan of, one primarily, but I won't say what it is incase you're not there yet. I'll just say that it involves Spidey.

But other than that I didn't much mind Fear Itself. I don't think it was near as bad as people make it out to be. It wasn't the best story ever, but it was decent... aided greatly by Immonen's art.

I still say it's oogles better than AvX.

AvX and Fear Itself were equally terrible.

While there were several highlights to AvX like Scott vs Xavier, Spidey pulling a monumental fast one on Colossus and Illyana and Cap's plea to the Hulk (which pretty much went no where).....philosophies of certain characters changed several times over the course of the event. During Fear Itself, nearly everybody was and remained out of character.

The only thing I've ever "got" about the Bendis hate is A V X. I love everything else.

Most of Bendis' detractors more criticize his characterizations and lack of acknowledgement of continuity than that he actually writes bad stories or anything.

Although, I will say, I find a lot of what he writes rather decompressed and just kind of mediocre.

Well I'd agree is bad with some characters, but great with most. I totally disagree with the continuity issue.
I rarely see anyone on here praise any writers.

He writes too much with an event mentality. Every single story he writes is either part of, leading into, or is the fallout of some stupid ****ing event that he also happens to be writing.

I think that was the case between Civil War and Siege. Though the stories in those were stand alone, you could tell they were aftermath and bridges to the next event. The first 2 years of Avengers and then Avengers post-Siege didn't have that feel. He didn't lead into and deal much with the Fear Itself or AvX stories... other than tie-ins, which isn't exclusively a Bendis thing.

He also did not have that problem with his Daredevil, Alias, or Moon Knight runs. Spider-Woman was aftermath of Secret Invasion but still very good. I don't read Ultimate Spidey but I don't think it has that issue either.

I actually don't blame Bendis for AvX. That was pretty much a fail by Marvel in general. He was one of 5 contributers to that story and I found his issues to be the better ones in the event.

I'd agree with you there Hobbit.
I think Dissembled is one of the best Marvel stories of the 21st century.

I didn't say anything to contradict that, only that the first year of his Avengers (including Disassembled) didn't feel like it was written for events. While I don't hold Disassembled in as high regard as you do, I did really enjoy it. It was the first Avengers story I'd read that interested me enough to keep coming back every issue until I realized I was an Avengers fan. I can see people's frustrations with it with how he went a bit kill-crazy but I loved it.

I actually came onto Avengers with the previous arc by Chuck Austin because I'm a hardcore X-Men fan and it had Captain Britain in it, but I only planned to stay for that one arc. Then my comic shop guy (at the time) talked me into trying Disassembled because Bendis was an up and coming writer who was awesome on Daredevil. I hadn't read Daredevil at the time but he and I had similar tastes in comics so I thought I'd give it a shot. Next thing I knew I heard Wolverine and Spidey were joining the team so I was interested. Then I heard the Sentry was joining the team and I'd just finished Jenkins' AWESOME mini with him and I was on board. Fortunately, Bendis' writing and stories kept me coming back.

Didn't mean to imply you did contradict that statement, sorry. Either way, I know the stories I have enjoyed have been by Bendis and Fraction.
What I've noticed is there are practically no female comic writers. It makes me want to go out and be one :')

I've seen plenty of writers get praised.Ed Brubaker's run on Cap was heavily praised as has most of his work.Mark Waid's current run on DD has been pretty praised and Rick Rememder has been a favorite of a lot of people for a while.

The people who post on the Marvel boards always seem very pessimistic.

Mark Waid, Jason Aaron, Rick Remender, Sam Humphries, Dan Slott, Brian Wood, Bryan K. Vaughan, Jonathan Hickman, Grant Morrison, Jeff Lemire, Brian Azzrello, etc. are all amazing writers.

I think it was Gail Simone or someone who said its still a bit sexist in the big two when it comes to female writers.

Plus Jason Aaron's Thor God Of Thunder is getting alot of praise.

I think it depends. Not everything every writer writes is gold so it really depends what people are reading.

I think any main writer is going to get slack. I'm sure if a new, clean writer came along and wrote like Bendis, he'd be praised.

I don't think so, though I guess it depends on which version of Bendis we're talking about here. I've liked some of his stuff, and I haven't likes some of the others. People aren't hating on him cause its the thing to do, some people just genuinely don't like what he's done with some books and characters.

Yep. His creator owned stuff has always been better, IMO. I became aware of him & a fan due to Powers. Most of his (616) marvel stuff I haven't liked, except Alias. And surprisingly, New X-Men has been pretty good so far.

I've liked all his stuff apart from some post-Civil War, all of Heroic Age and A Vs X. And it's not me being young and niave, it's me not being picky and looking for perfection :o

AvX and Fear Itself were equally terrible.
I disagree. AvX wasn't bad, just horribly, horribly lazy because it is obvious that no one wanted to write the damn thing, but Marvel editorial demanded it in order to have an event to launch Marvel NOW. AvX just oozes with Bendis, Fraction, Brubaker, Hickman, and Aaron not giving a ****.

Fear Itself though, that one was just god awful. Another editorially mandated event book to take advantage of the Thor and Captain America movies that was horribly written as well. Unlike AvX, it felt as if Fraction at least tried with this event and failed miserably.

I've so far read the first issue of X-Men, Avengers and X Force in Fear Itself and I'm enjoying them.

AVSX was pretty boring and Im glad its over. Ill def take it over Fear Itself though. No interest in rereading either. For the most part Ive dug the aftermath of AVSX and where Marvel Now is. Most of the books have been really good. Hope UXF doesnt suck.

I have unfortunately very little faith in either new X-Force book being any good
I'm intrigued by the UXF team, but that's as far as it goes
Remender was fantastic, and the art always elevated it that last bit
Seeing the art alone for the new series makes it feel like it won't be as good...

So...uh...Beast is a blue sasquatch now? Hehe.
