Marvel Now - Part 3

I have unfortunately very little faith in either new X-Force book being any good
I'm intrigued by the UXF team, but that's as far as it goes
Remender was fantastic, and the art always elevated it that last bit
Seeing the art alone for the new series makes it feel like it won't be as good...
Sam Humphries is a pretty good writer, too.

I rarely see anyone on here praise any writers.
That's a shame. I don't hang out on the Marvel Comics boards that often, but whenever I hear about a Marvel run, it's almost always praise for someone's current/recent great run. The writers are literally all I follow in comics. I only read writers I love (Waid, Morrison, Moore, Brubaker...regardless of what titles they're writing) or have heard great things about (will soon be checking out some Hickman). So my entire comics-reading experience is built around praise for the writers, lol.

I have noticed an unusually high amount of negativity all over the place for AvX, though.

I've seen allot of praise for Brubaker...and that's about it. Maybe I'm just too focused on the Bendis hate.

Remender and Waid are likely the most praised writers at the moment. Slott was there but is in a "paused" status due to the Superior Spider-Man thing.

I remember back when Fraction used to be among the praised but that fell away not too long into his Uncanny X-Men run.

Brubaker used to be highly praised but it feels like he's fallen a bit in status, maybe his overstay on Captain America (so I hear, I didn't actually read the book).

It's funny, I loved Kieron Gillen's Thor run, but not his X-Men run.

Actually I think its because of Secret Avengers didnt wow people

^little of both

His Secret Avengers arc was a little weak, and about the same time his Cap run started feeling lazy.

But I will say, as someone who has been doing a lot of it, Remender has been getting a good amount of praise the past 2 years.
Mainly because of X-Force, but Venom was quite good too, and from what I hear his Secret Avengers is above average.
I just read his "black heart billy" which was kinda silly, but it was an older indy project
Got "Strange Girl" to check out next...

I liked his X-Men run. I hated his final issue of Uncanny due to his depiction of Cyclops post-AvX, but it's becoming more and more obvious that that's the direction the big wigs want him going in. Who was Gillen to write any different? Plus, he made up for it with Consequences, which ended up being a continuation of Uncanny and was pretty darn good.

I could see that. I remember people were just going nuts at the idea of Brubaker taking on the Avengers and we were all just sorta stupidfied by how blah it was. I wasn't a huge Brubaker fan anyway following his run on Uncanny X-Men, but that was the last straw for me considering him high calibre. For me, he and Fraction peaked with Immortal Iron Fist.

Brubaker was on fire a few years back (minus his X-Men run), but IMO, he's sloped a bit since Steve Rogers came back. His Marvel stuff at least, I've never read his Crimanal series or other Indy work.

I've found it extremely mediocre so far. I dunno, both Fraction and Gillen's Tony has struck me as incredibly boring, and that's kind of disengaged me from everything else.

Gillen's Uncanny X-men was one of the best things about the line in ages and the best Uncanny run since the mid 90s. I REALLY dug his work here

Brubaker took some major hits that just added up. I think Secret Avengers was the last straw for him as a guy with "unrealized and far reaching" potential. He's still great with certain niches though..like Cap and Winter Soldier..i still think he's a great writer...just seemingly limited.

That being said I didnt even mind his Xmen or Secret that much...they certainly were not as bad as Loeb's Hulk or Ultimates stuff...they were just let downs, not entirely trash.

Honestly, I feel that all of Brubaker's writing has suffered a huge drop off over the past year or so. Even WS and Fatale I've found to be pale imitations of what Brubaker used to pump out regularly.

The last thing I legit loved from him was his last Criminal mini...or Cap before it was relaunched.

I was a steady cap reader since his (bru's) 1st issue...until about the time of the major Zemo arc , that was a real downer for me being a T-bolts fan.

He also really ticked me off how he portrayed Nova in his Secret Avengers "shot"..in some ways i think that was a kill "shot" for Rich Rider.

Pretty much. You getting the new Nova series?

Much as I am EXTREMELY concerned with the fact that the Nova title is in the hands of Jeph Loeb who hasn't been at the top of his game in a LONG LONG while, I am very much drawn to the new design of the Nova suit. The Red detail against the "cosmic black" looks very striking and if anything Ed McGuiness looks like he has upped his game significantly. I'm going to give it a 6-issue test myself before seeing if its decent.

That dude ain't the real Nova anyway so who cares is Loeb tanks it?

My concern is that if Richard Rider does make a comeback it will likely be through this Nova series. What happens when you get 2 Novas is where the concern lies. Its like when Kyle Rayner met non-Parallax Hal Jordan all those years back.

Yeah I'll be checking it out too. Kinda nervous about it, and i could go on with my issues, but I will give it a shot. I swear if he screws this up... I'll never even look at another Loeb book...no matter who or what he writes.

How was the short story in the Point One book that came out a while ago?

I was actually really surprised at how "meh" I found Brubaker's Secret Avengers. That was actually the book I was most looking forward to at the time.

Exactly. I have no emotional investment in Sam Alexander so if/when he goes full-Loebtard, it won't be a problem.

Yeah but Loebtard-ness might affect the supporting cast if he decides to use any from the previous series. He seems to have his sights cast on Rocket Racoon and Gamora which is a significant concern.

Having avoided any media featuring Sam Alexander I'm not sure what to expect.

In Brubaker's defense, he intended to keep Rich around for the long haul, but after learning that Nova was dying in Thanos Imperative it became moot. So he wrote the first arc and then sent Nova on his way.
