He was more popular than Iron Man? Can you elaborate on that?

For sure one of those will be Shang Chi 2 and probably Doctor Strange 3. Hopefully it's the November 7 release which should mean they film in 2024.

I think he meant back in the 90s. As I kinda agree with that. War Machine was the one who got prominent appearance back in the day, if I am not mistaken.

I first know of War Machine from the game Marvel vs Capcom 2 from PS1.

Pretty much what @MarvelFan was saying. That's not to say less people knew who Iron Man was. It was just during a period in the 90s where War Machine was looked at as the cooler character. Stark was generally thought of as a bit of a stiff.

That I understood, I was just surprised WM is in this game but Iron Man wasn't? Then again, I've never played.

I know it's further down the pipeline. I presume we'll get some official info about the film after Secret Invasion has completed its run and we see where Rhodey is at the end of it.

So after Wakanda Forever and what we’re hearing about Thunderbolts, does Rhodey get a Vibranium suit when it’s all said and done?

Honestly I think it was just because Iron Man was already in the Marvel Super Heroes followed by Marvel vs Street Fighter, and Capcom wanted to implement a very popular War Machine at the time for Marvel vs Capcom 1. However if you ever happen to look closely at it, Capcom totally half assed it as it was just a palette swap. War Machine played identically like Iron Man from the prior two games. They fixed it in Marvel vs Capcom 2 though and gave him missiles. Yes, I know, I'm a nerd.

I'm gonna go ahead and wager there won't be any further news on here til after Secret Invasion completes its run.

I'm assuming this would be released after Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, July or November.

However this, Thunderbolts and Captain America: New World Order have to be the most random and oddest choices for a mcu film, as they were just supporting characters and played second fiddle to Iron Nan/Steve Rogers in the past. I only eXpected sequels and films for new mcu characters (Shang-Chi, Eternals, Blade, Fantastic 4) after the Infinity Saga.

You def have a point there.

I suppose if nothing else Marvel wants to show some diversity and they have Don Cheadle and might as well use him plus they can get some residual Iron Man fanbase to back this film.

Marvel Studios could just moved on with sequels with Shang-Chi, Black Panther and Eternals, those films had diversity. And of course X-Men...

I just don't get the benefit of waiting at least 4 years for a sequel.

Yeah I can't believe they made a Black Panther movie since he was just a supporting character in Civil War. Such an odd choice. :o

How is it comparable to Bucky/Rhodey who were just sidekicks and played Supporting characters in movies, for more at least 3 movies....

You could have said Spider-Man and Black Widow too while you were at it.

Who are you kidding trying to imply that T'Challa has the same importance as Rhodey and Bucky when T'Challa was already lined up to headline his own movie even before Civil War was released, and wasn't really seen as a Supporting character of somebody else even before the MCU.

It worked well with Quantumania. :o hopefully it would work too when Eternals 2 and Shang-Chi are released in 2025 or 2026.

Black Widow is indeed another good example. She was even more of a supporting character in the movies. Plus both Panther and Widow started out as supporting characters for other characters in the comics too.

The idea that a character having been in a supporting role in the past means they have to be locked into that role and can never fill another role in the story is so silly to me. Why would a supporting character growing into a main character be an issue in any way? I'd argue that it's even a more natural progression of the story than introducing brand new characters is. Do you also ask why Dreamworks chose to make Puss in Boots movies, since he's apparently "supposed" to just be Shrek's sidekick or something? Do you wonder why Nintendo would ever make Luigi's Mansion, Yoshi's Island, Wario Land, Super Princess Peach, Captain Toad, Diddy Kong Racing, etc. when all those characters had been supporting characters and sidekicks to Mario?

What makes it especially silly to me is that these characters you take issue with have had lead roles in the comics since forever. Rhodey has been a main character of his own stories since he became Iron Man in 1983 and in several volumes since. For a while during the '90s he was arguably even more popular than Tony, hence why War Machine became a playable character in Marvel VS Capcom over Iron Man.

Sam may have had a bit of a slower start, but especially since becoming Captain America he's absolutely been a significant main character.

So we have a natural progression of these characters, which also follows the source material, and is the easiest way to continue both the themes of the franchises they hail from (but from a new angle since these characters bring their own viewpoint), as well as the rest of the supporting casts that are still around. Plus presumably the events of these movies fit with things they want to happen to progress the MCU meta-narrative.

Kinda worried about the film's future after the lackluster flop that is Ant-Man 3.

Could Armor Wars do worse or would they stack the film to make it more of an Iron Man or quasi-Avengers film than just a War Machine film? Hell, I'm hoping it doesn't get cancelled at all for fears of how it might perform box office wise.

Nearly 2.5 years since the concept was first confirmed and went from a series to a film and yet we've only had one star and one writer confirmed. Just sucks that this project keeps getting sidelined as if intentional.
