Iron Man Marvel Studios Update (Fortune/CNN) New Iron Man Pic

I see no picture.

WTF? They changed the pic. It showed Favreau, Kevin Feige, and Downey Jr all sitting next to a smashed up car from the set. Damnit I should have saved that pic first. LOL

Here's the pic.

Hi Guyz,
If I was you, I wouldn't worry too much about the pic, but about this quote:
Maisel took over as chairman of Marvel Studios this March. He was behind the company's recent agreement to co-produce a Spider-Man musical on Broadway with songs by U2's Bono and the Edge. He has been suggesting changes on the "Iron Man" script, including combining two villains into one to save money.
:wow:

it's on page 2 (direct link http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2007/05/28/100034246/index2.htm)

(I hope it hasn't been posted or discussed elsewhere) :hyper:

Yes, that quote is disconcerting indeed. It alludes to our biggest fear: Stane and Mandarin being combined. That would reek of Batman Begins.

My ear was also turned up by this:

Arad feared Maisel wanted to produce too many movies too fast. He also worried that Marvel was putting too many weak characters into the lineup.

Could they be alluding to Ant-man and Namor? I think so.

Mandarin=Iron Monger?

NO F***ING WAY!!! IT WILL RUIN THE WHOLE MOVIE FOR ME!!! :down

Yeah, when I read that quote about two villains, my first thought was immediate disgust at the idea of making Stane the Mandarin or anything like that...

However, the whole thing about "saving money" does ease my mind a bit--it seems unlikely that Stane would be a costly villain, seeing as I don't see him donning the Iron Monger armor yet, and even if he did...it wouldn't save much money to have him also be the Mandarin, since they would still have to pay for the FX of the rings.

Well, we have seen the Iron Monger armor in the set pics and Stane probably won't be Mandarin.

^ I thought Favreau said there would be no rings and Mandarin would not be like he is in the comics. We know bridges is Stane. I suggested that perhaps he has an alternate identity of the Mandarin. Stark has no clue Stane is the Mandarin and neither will the audience...until the end. Shocker huh? That was an early theory of mine when Bridges was first cast. I just bumped that thread.

It's not impossible.

But it would be stupid using the same twist of Batman Begins.

Hmm, really? Heh, gonna have to go look up some set pictures now. :hyper:

But yeah, in that case, I'm going to agree with your theory--seems likely that they might've just cut Mandarin out of the movie and spliced Stane into his scenes.

Someone needs to introduce this *****enozzle to the atomic wedgie.

How wonderful he jumps in a month prior to lensing to suggest radical changes to the script and tenor of the prospective trilogy. AFTER the filmmakers have already told a salivating crowd of rabid fanboys what to expect, not to mention that Wizard interview.

How's this for a reactionary fanboy?

Thanks for the article AD. I'd use a better version of that pic as a wallpaper if it weren't for that crap covering Favs' right boot.

yeah with this new info of combining two baddies its starting to truly turn into Marvels version of Batman Begins....not necessarily a bad thing.

It's a movie in 2007 not a comic book in 1950. So obviously certain things had to change and Favreau said the Mandarin as we know it from the comics would just not work. So instead of just ignoring the ever so popular character you change him to suit the film and the times. It's sort of a nod to the fans and a great way to trick us. Otherwise we'd know the script and character motives in every comic book film released.

But it would be stupid using the same twist of Batman Begins.

Batman Begins is not close to being the first movie with a character twist. Iron Man is more grounded in Reality than Batman Begins is. That's why no magic rings and no classic Mandarin. I'd compare the twist to The Usual Suspects more than Batman Begins.

It only sounds like the idea of merging Stane and the Mandarin is an idea being tossed around at this point. So I'm not going to put too much concern into this.

I realize that the Mandarin would need to be updated in order to work in a live-action. However, I think that could easily be done without completely revamping the character. If they don't realize that, then I would prefer that they just omit the character from the script.

I don't mind a nod to the character and using the name. It's not like they need to save the character for another Iron Man movie where he'll have magic rings and look like Fu-Man-Chu. It's not happening.

It would still seem cheap. I don't want there to a character called "The Mandarin" who won't have any connection to the comics.

They way I see it when adapting the Mandarin is the first thing you do is avoid writing him as a stereotype and adandon the Fu Manchu look. I would simply have "Gene Kahn" as a Chinese businessman whose interests are threatened by Tony Stark. Much like the old comics from the 60's, the Mandarin wouldn't have any problem with science and technology and would use it as a weapon. This is where you can explain the rings as being simply technological marvels that he has mastered.

As long as Stane doesn't use magical microwave emitters to vaporize water filled with flower power chemicals, I'll be happy.

Since no cast members are listed as playing The Mandarin, AD's theory must be the way they are going.

I don't think Maisel would interfere with a shooting script. I'm betting they paired down during meetings prior to shooting anything.
