Maisel took over as chairman of Marvel Studios this March. He was behind the company's recent agreement to co-produce a Spider-Man musical on Broadway with songs by U2's Bono and the Edge. He has been suggesting changes on the "Iron Man" script, including combining two villains into one to save money.
Hi Guyz,
If I was you, I wouldn't worry too much about the pic, but about this quote:
it's on page 2 (direct link http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2007/05/28/100034246/index2.htm)
(I hope it hasn't been posted or discussed elsewhere)
Arad feared Maisel wanted to produce too many movies too fast. He also worried that Marvel was putting too many weak characters into the lineup.
No, they probably completely cut out Mandarin from the script rewriting his scenes with Stane instead.Mandarin=Iron Monger?
NO F***ING WAY!!! IT WILL RUIN THE WHOLE MOVIE FOR ME!!!
Well, we have seen the Iron Monger armor in the set pics and Stane probably won't be Mandarin. However, the whole thing about "saving money" does ease my mind a bit--it seems unlikely that Stane would be a costly villain, seeing as I don't see him donning the Iron Monger armor yet, and even if he did...it wouldn't save much money to have him also be the Mandarin, since they would still have to pay for the FX of the rings.
But it would be stupid using the same twist of Batman Begins.^ I thought Favreau said there would be no rings and Mandarin would not be like he is in the comics. We know bridges is Stane. I suggested that perhaps he has an alternate identity of the Mandarin. Stark has no clue Stane is the Mandarin and neither will the audience...until the end. Shocker huh? That was an early theory of mine when Bridges was first cast. I just bumped that thread.
It's not impossible.

Someone needs to introduce this *****enozzle to the atomic wedgie. He has been suggesting changes on the "Iron Man" script, including combining two villains into one to save money.

It's a movie in 2007 not a comic book in 1950. So obviously certain things had to change and Favreau said the Mandarin as we know it from the comics would just not work. So instead of just ignoring the ever so popular character you change him to suit the film and the times. It's sort of a nod to the fans and a great way to trick us. Otherwise we'd know the script and character motives in every comic book film released.
I don't mind a nod to the character and using the name. It's not like they need to save the character for another Iron Man movie where he'll have magic rings and look like Fu-Man-Chu. It's not happening.
Batman Begins is not close to being the first movie with a character twist. Iron Man is more grounded in Reality than Batman Begins is. That's why no magic rings and no classic Mandarin. I'd compare the twist to The Usual Suspects more than Batman Begins.
