No. Onslaught was pretty much a product of the 90's in every way. And Marvel won't let him just stay gone. :p

His backstory made no sense. He had muscles with no sign of proportion, shoulder-pads, spikes, and armor. He could do anything the story demanded. He existed for one large fight. The only character worse was WONDER WOMAN's Genocide, who had spikes for eyes.
It's funny because it's true.

A Young Allies/Secret Avengers crossover, it seems. Marvel are keen to keep Young Allies alive by mixing it with other titles.

Eh, it's got Rikki and the Secret Avengers, so I'll read it.

Dammit, I thought Charlie was past this crap.

Did the Heroes Reborn world have it's own Onslaught?

I'm pretty sure this isn't gonna be Xavier and/or Magneto. There's been no build-up in the X-titles and no promos or advertisements aimed at X-Men fans. And besides, I presume they'll both be caught up in "Age of X" around this time, whatever it is.

I know.

It does look like a YOUNG ALLIES/SECRET AVENGERS crossover mini. Given that Rikki Barnes/Nomad has ties to Steve Rogers and Black Widow in the NOMAD series and back-ups, it makes some degree of sense. The series was canceled due to low sales so if McKeever has any subplots or tidbits to do with the Young Allies, he'll have to do it here or in his NOMAD back-up strips in CAPTAIN AMERICA.

Onslaught comes back every few years; he came back in some Loeb/Leifield cluster**** in which Rikki went to Marvel 616 and McKeever took over for her after CAPTAIN AMERICA #600. He is a being separate from Xavier & Magneto and re-manifested in the "Heroes Reborn" Counter Earth universe where Rikki came from, I think.

At the very least, it will reunite Firestar with the Avengers.

McKeever is writing it so I am sure it will be good or at least above average. I just never like Onslaught. He's a ridiculous poster child villain for the 90's and no one likes him. He makes Doomsday look like a deeply fleshed and innovative character. He makes WWE look like Hamlet.

It is worth mention that Onslaught will technically be the most powerful villain the Secret Avengers have ever fought in their brief history. And y'know who isn't writing it? Ed Brubaker. Y'know where it isn't happening? In SECRET AVENGERS. This continues the trend of the Secret Avengers fighting actual super villains everywhere but their own title, where they usually fight mooks, oddities, or some generic evil council thing.

Eh, isn't it a little early to say who they "usually" fight? It's only been one arc and the first issue of the second.

Without defending the actual stories, Bendis at least knew how to truck out big Avengers villains for many of his stories outside NEW AVENGERS. He executed them poorly, but they were there.

The Secret Avengers in their actual title have fought minions, Martian tentacles, and soon to be ninja. The Shadow Council are always off in the distance and in theory should be no challenge if they are ever in range of Valkyrie or War Machine. To a degree I see them as akin to the Headmen of old DEFENDERS issues, only more serious. For $4 an issue, I expect to see the title heroes fight something more than another possessed hero or expendable henchmen.

In other books, by other writers, the Secret Avengers have fought or will fight Capt. Barracuda, Taskmaster, and now Onslaught.

In CAPTAIN AMERICA and STEVE ROGERS: SUPER SOLDIER, Brubaker still figured out how to include villains such as Baron Zemo and Machinesmith.

I actually liked Onslaught as far as event-villains go but he really didn't ever need to be rehashed after that.

Machinesmith should team up with Ultron. :hehe:

That wouldn't be so bad at all.

Yet he has! Twice and counting! :o

It likely doesn't help that he got to be immortalized in a video game to casual audiences as a boss in Capcom's MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 1 from the late 90's.

Ha! I thought he'd show up again! I figure that girl Bucky from the Heroes Reborn universe would show up again in some Onslaught-related story in 616. She's supposed to be in the 616 universe now. Was what up with that?

Onslaught is one of my favorite storylines. I never did get around to reading Onslaught Reborn because I didn't have the money at the time and knew nothing about the Heroes Reborn world, so I wasn't complelled to read it. This time though, I'm getting it.

She's Nomad now. She's in Young Allies and has a backup in Captain America.

So Nomad gets possessed and Liefeld will be drawing the covers? I think they may have just lost my money. :o

They had your money to begin with?

I love how Liefield just figured he'd use the same Rikki drawing on two covers.

I have to say, the art on this is not impressing me. Filipe Andrade does the NOMAD back up strips for CAPTAIN AMERICA, at least since David Baldeon got too busy drawing YOUNG ALLIES to do so (and to be fair, he seemed to put out 30+ pages a month for a short while, which is a yeoman effort for a penciler these days), and while his art isn't bad, it is similar to Humberto Ramos or even to a degree Chris Bachelo, in that sort of "anatomy is clay" feel that is better for illustration for cartoons than in general superhero comics. And naturally art by Liefield is just ugly, and nothing gets me more pessimistic about a $3.99 mini series than cover art by Liefield in which someone is literally growling at me.

I cannot understand how Liefield, who has less grasp of anatomy, proportion, posture, shading, and fluidity than the average artist on Deviant Art has had one of the best careers of an artist in comics.

I'll still buy it, though. It'll be the last gasp for YOUNG ALLIES, at least as written by Sean McKeever.

Didnt they bring Onslaught back for the 10th anniversary a few years ago? Was that canon as I didnt read it

Yes it was canon, taking place in the Heroes Reborn world and ultimately it brought Rikki Barnes into the 616 world, and assumingly Onslaught as well.
